In recent months, Among Us has become an incredible breakout hit. What started as a simple social deduction game from indie studio InnerSloth has turned into a cultural phenomenon. It seems just about everyone is playing the game and loving it. Everyone, that is, except Conan O'Brien. Here's why the comedian and popular talk show host says he just doesn't like the game.
This occurred in a recent episode of the Good Game Nice Try podcast. The podcast is hosted by Sonya Reid and Aaron Bleyaert, and it's a part of O'Brien's Team Coco network. The podcast has regular celebrity guests like Ben Schwartz and T-Pain. It's also a sort of spiritual successor to the "Clueless Gamer" bits seen on TBS' long-running talk show Conan. So, it makes sense that O'Brien would stop by for an episode sooner or later.
Gaming podcasts have become increasingly popular, with franchises like Assassin's Creed using them to promote its latest entries (Echoes of Valhalla), while shows focused on live plays of tabletop RPGs (like Critical Role and The Adventure Zone) are more popular than ever. Due to the success of Among Us, it was only a matter of time before the co-hosts of Good Game Nice Try discussed it. During the episode, Conan O'Brien reveals he's played Among Us once and just doesn't like it.
Why Conan O'Brien Thinks Among Us Is Bad
In the Among Us episode of Good Game Nice Try, O'Brien says he didn't like the game because it's too easy for newcomers to win. He relates this to the one time he played with his son and his son's friends. O'Brien got the Impostor role and managed to do pretty well, despite not knowing the rules. "Any game where an idiot can jump in just willy-nilly and suddenly rocket to the top and triumph," O'Brien quips on the podcast, "that's a problem with the game."
Of course, O'Brien is being a bit facetious here. He its his son loves the game and plays it all the time. O'Brien's comments are meant for laughs more than actual criticisms, so fans of Among Us shouldn't get too mad at him. Besides, Impostors usually win games anyway, so maybe O'Brien just had luck on his side.
O'Brien's own podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend, and Among Us have both reached new heights of popularity in the last year, so it's great to see these two worlds finally colliding. O'Brien has always had candid and funny takes on video games, and it's nice seeing him the Good Game Nice Try podcast for an episode - even if his tongue-in-cheek thoughts on Among Us might prove controversial to some fans.
