Joel McHale has revealed the movie continuation of Community is currently in the works, with multiple actors from the sitcom returning to reprise their roles in the film. As of writing, filming for the installment of the franchise hasn't begun yet, though Donald Glover, who plays Troy Barnes, indicated a possible 2025 shooting window. However, the exact production schedule has yet to be revealed.
Speaking with ScreenRant during his campaign for Seattle's Best Coffee, McHale revealed some stars of Community are open to continuing the series beyond its movie continuation. While he didn't label any interested parties by name, he did indicate that, depending on how well the movie performs, the show could continue in some form. The Jeff actor implied this could be through a limited series, though it's unclear what the plan would be if it were to keep going. Check out what McHale had to say below:
I think there are some of us that would love to keep going, and I would be like, "Great, if you guys want to do episodes, let us know." I think that'll probably depend on the success of a movie, but I think if there's enough of a demand to do more. I don't know what it would look like, but obviously the movie would have to inform a lot of that. I'm game, and I know a few others are game. I'm not going to tell you whom, but I would definitely do [more], they are always like, "Oh, a limited series!" I would totally be up for it.
What McHale's Statement Means For Community's Larger Future
Can The Show Continue After The Movie?
Every season of Community emphasizes how well the series works in a half-hour sitcom format, emphasized by wild episodes and continuing stories throughout. The movie will likely replicate this with a longer runtime, emphasizing the same comedic elements as the original while focusing on a single, lengthy storyline. Based on McHale's statement, however, this doesn't necessarily mean the end for the show, since multiple actors have expressed interest in its continuation should the movie become a success.

Joel McHale's 2024 Community Reunion Repaid A Sitcom Favor From 9 Years Earlier
Long after the final season of Community, stars Joel McHale and Ken Jeong guest-starred in each other's sitcoms: Dr. Ken and Animal Control.
For now, though, it's still unclear when the movie is going to arrive, with the biggest issue right now being schedules of its now-busy actors aligning with one another. Since the film has been greenlit, though, it wouldn't be surprising if filming happened sooner rather than later. Although unclear what will happen in the movie, such as resolving Community plot lines or revealing drastic changes for characters a decade later, the reception could be the deciding factor as to whether the show can somehow return in another form later down the road.
Our Take On Community's Potential Continuation After The Movie
A Promising Fresh Coat Of Paint For The Sitcom
If the sitcom were to continue following a successful movie, then it would likely be very different from the original despite holding onto similar humor and ideas. Community getting a continuation through a limited series could explore new ideas now that the characters are older, allowing them to grow into their own in various ways they couldn't in the original series. While this may offer a different mood in contrast to the original, it could still be a noteworthy way for the show to keep going should the movie prove successful.
