Verso is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's best kept secret, with very little information released about his character before the game launched. He is one of the most effective damage dealers in the game, but you won't be able to have him in your party until you reach the beginning of Act 2. Verso's combat utilizes a system of Perfection and Ranks, where Perfection is acquired by landing hits on enemies and will increase his Rank from D all the way up to S-Rank status, where attacks receive an ultimate damage bonus.
WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR CLAIR OBSCUR: EXPEDITION 33!
Verso is essentially the replacement for Gustave in Clair Obscur as you enter Act 2, and as such, you'll have access to Gustave's entire arsenal of weapons, as well as a new and improved skill tree that is actually fully accessible. While Gustave focused mainly on his Overcharge ability to Break enemies, Verso's Perfection and Rank system is equally effective at building up Break Bar damage and Breaking and Stunning enemies. This build puts to use Verso's skills that have Critical Hit effects and maximizes his Critical Hit rate with the most powerful Pictos available.

Best Weapons & Attributes For Verso In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Either The Glaceso Or Contorso Sword & Dagger Weapons Are Ideal For Critical Hit Effects
For the best Critical Hit build for Verso, I'd recommend either the Glaceso or Contorso weapons as both of these have unique Critical Hit effects. My personal favorite is the Glaceso because it deals much higher damage and has Ice as an Element, but it isn't available until you go to Frozen Hearts, an optional area in Act 2. Glaceso scales with both Defense and Luck, giving you a much higher inherent Critical Rate and a strong Defense to add balance, assuming you invest your points primarily in these attributes.

Glaceso gains +1 Perfection on Critical Hit at Level 4 and has a healing effect on dealing Criticals once you upgrade it to Level 10. At Level 20, all Counterattacks from Verso are automatically Criticals. Should you choose to use the Contorso for this build, to adjust your attributes accordingly, as it scales with Agility instead of Luck as its primary attribute. The Contorso is more of a Speed-based weapon, but it has some cool Lightning effects once upgraded to Level 20.
Best Skills For Verso In Clair Obscur
These Skills Are Optimized For Critical Hits & Ranking Up Fast
Verso has a wide range of skills that can be mixed and matched for all different sorts of playstyles. I've found this Critical Hit Rate build to be extremely effective, and it incorporates different skills for every Rank from D all the way to S. I recommend having a dedicated unit in your party to ensure Verso has sufficient AP, is properly Buffed, and in case Verso gets low on Health. Either Sciel or Monoco are great unit candidates.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - Best Maelle Build Guide (Skills, Weapons, & Pictos)
Maelle is one of the best playable characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and her best build includes her fire-based skills and Virtuose Stance.
This build incorporates Verso's two Skills that specifically have Critical hit effects, Assault Zero and Quick Strike, to expedite his Perfection gain and hit Rank S as quickly as possible. With enough AP set up on your turn to start from ive Lumina effects, and especially if you have the Cheater Lumina ive equipped, you'll be able to hit Rank S by your second turn of nearly every encounter. Cheater allows you to always play twice in a row and is acquired from Sprong, the giant enemy in the middle of the ocean.

Quick Strike will always be your go-to first move, and it's not meant to deal much damage but instead to increase your Perfection to Rank B almost right away thanks to the Level 4 Perfection boost from Glaceso. Assault Zero will then guarantee Rank S by your second attack, though you'll have Skill options at each Rank in between in case you get hit and lose Rank. At Rank S, Phantom Stars is an incredible skill that has 5 hits, will only cost 5 AP, and deals extreme Light damage to all enemies.
Building up Break Bar damage will be a primary focus, and will require good timing for parries and counterattacks. One option for a Lune build in Clair Obscur utilizes her Earth Break damage skills to set Verso up for Stance Breaking and deal massive damage with Critical hits. Once an enemy's Break Bar is filled, use either Phantom Stars or the Striker Gradient Skill to Break and Stun them. End Bringer is an alternative option for your Rank A Skill, dealing increased damage to Stunned enemies and sustaining the Stun effect for another turn, but it costs 9 AP.
Best Pictos & Luminas For Verso In Clair Obscur
Boost Critical Rate Significantly With The Random Defense Pictos
For this build, you can get Verso's Critical Rate up near 200% with the right Pictos equipped, though I recommend slotting Critical Break as your featured Pictos. This is where you'll be getting most of your Break damage mentioned above, and you'll find it's extremely effective at setting you up for optimal Rank S attacks. This will also give a nice Speed bonus to ensure Verso plays more often, especially if you don't have many attribute points invested in Agility. Alternatively, Breaker has a higher Crit rate boost and increases general Break damage.

*At the time of this writing, I have not yet upgraded the Breaker Pictos to max Level 33. |
Charging Critical will boost the amount of Gradient Charge you get substantially since Verso will be constantly dealing Critical hit damage, and it also gives Verso a significant boost to Defense. Breaker should be used in place of Charging Critical until you make your way to Renoir's Drafts in Act 3, a deep and mysterious region only accessible when you've unlocked the ability to go underwater with Esquie by maxing out Verso and his relationship. Random Defense is another high Crit Rate-boosting Pictos that's available in the endgame, increasing Crit Rate by 76% when fully upgraded to Level 33.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Skyrockets As Early GOTY Contender With High Metacritic Score
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a game made by approximately 30 people, has shot to the second-highest place on Metacritic with a score of 91.
Random Defense is an interesting option with some downsides that are easily outweighed by the high Crit Rate bonus. Damage Verso receives is randomly increased by a multiple between 50% and 200%, but since the main goal is to avoid damage and gain Perfection to increase Rank, this should be a minimal concern by the endgame. The 76% increase to Crit Rate is well worth it, and ultimately will ensure Verso deals constant Critical Hits at maximum damage, making him one of the most powerful characters in your party for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
