There are many secrets and mysteries in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and figuring them all out can sometimes be a challenge. Once you gain the ability to swim and explore more of the continent with Esquie, you'll probably notice that there are glowing areas scattered around the ocean. Approaching these glowing locations with Esquie, you can try to interact and dive down to discover what's there, but you won't be able to until you unlock the right ability. Unlike his other abilities, Esquie's underwater diving mechanic does not unlock naturally as part of the main story.

Instead, Esquie's ability to dive underwater can only be unlocked by increasing his relationship level all the way to Level 6, and at that point you'll have to go on a little excursion to find Urrie, his special rock that gives him the ability to finally dive into those glowing spots in the ocean. Unlocking underwater diving is essential if you want to explore every area in Clair Obscur, and certain places like the terrifying Renoir's Drafts and The Abyss are only accessible if you can dive deep underwater with Esquie.

How To Swim Underwater With Esquie In Clair Obscur

Advance Esquie's Relationship To Level 6 & Go Fight Francois Again

Clair Obscur Esquie With New message from Maelle for Papa

Esquie has many different exploration abilities that you can put to good use to check out all the nooks and crannies of the Continent. While his main abilities, such as breaking through rocks or swimming, are automatically unlocked during the main story progression, his ability to swim underwater is a bit more complicated than simply advancing the main story. For underwater swimming, you need to advance Esquie's relationship all the way up to Level 6 before you can start taking the dive. This will likely take you all the way until Act 3, as you probably won't have enough camp encounter choices until then.

During Esquie's relationship quest at Level 6, you'll have to face Francois with only Verso, so make sure he's properly set up for the fight with the best weapons.

To advance relationships with each character in Clair Obscur, Verso will need to speak with them at camp and spend time alone, gradually advancing each character relationship level. Relationships with other characters will unlock their respective Gradient Skills, while advancing Esquie's relationship will unlock Verso's Gradient Skills. However, Esquie will have a unique encounter once you reach Level 6 relationship, and he and Verso will travel back to Esquie's Nest automatically to get a special rock from Francois, the turtle-shell enemy you fought much earlier in Act 1.

What The Glowing Ocean Pools Are In Clair Obscur

Glowing Pools Often Contain Loot, But Can Also Be New Areas With Unique Enemies

Once you acquire the special Urrie rock, you will have access to underwater diving. Now you can revisit those glowing blue pools in the ocean and take a dive to either collect the loot or enter the new region. Many of these glowing pools in the ocean contain valuable loot that will come in useful when making your way through the more obscure parts of Act 3. Typically, these are additional Colour of Lumina, which will increase the number of ive Lumina effects you can have active once used on a particular character.

Other glowing pools will be portals to new areas, such as Renoir's Drafts, one of the most mysterious and unsettling locations in the game. This area leads to a place called The Abyss where you can face off against Verso's long-lost acquaintance, Simon, a particularly tough boss. Make sure you're properly set up for a tough fight venturing into these endgame areas unless you want to face certain defeat. Overall, unlocking the ability to dive underwater is an essential exploration feature in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and it can only be unlocked by reaching Level 6 relationship with Esquie.
