Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer additionally boasts an impressive ing cast, with Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, and Rami Malek also confirmed for the biopic.
Probably best known for his Nolan ultimately parted ways with WB, with Universal eventually gaining the rights for the biopic and setting a release date of July 2023.
It has now been confirmed that Nolan's historical drama will begin shooting in Los Alamos, New Mexico as early as March this year. Reporting on an open casting call for extras being held at the Greer Garson Theatre, Sante Fe, the Albuquerque Journal details the kind of characters the production is looking to cast, specifically "Northern New Mexico locals...Veterans or military roles [and] Scientists." The Journal then goes on to confirm when the extras will be required and where filming will take place:
The production will be filming in Los Alamos this spring and will require actors to portray styles from the the 1920s-1940s...Cast must be available to work two to three full days in March 2022 and must be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The casting call appears to offer a lot of new information about Oppenheimer, along with its planned production start date. The announcement calling for scientists and its location of Los Alamos is particularly telling, as the film's namesake was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, the organization responsible for building the first atomic bombs. This implies that the first block of filming will be focused predominantly on Oppenheimer's work in overseeing the construction of the nuclear devices, and the presence of "Veterans or military roles" means it will likely feature him overseeing code-name Trinity, the first test detonation conducted south of Socorro, New Mexico.
While many details on Oppenheimer remain under wraps, this casting call will come as exciting news to many fans of the director who are eagerly awaiting on-set sneak peeks of the biopic. Meticulous as always, Nolan is known for his attention to accuracy, especially when it comes to his more historical ventures like Dunkirk, and although he will hopefully refrain from going so far as to drop an actual atom bomb on the Mexican border, his choice of location for the shoot suggests that he has lost none of his attention to detail.
