James Gunn addresses the the DCU's first chapter "Gods and Monsters", as well as directing Superman and writing other projects such as Creature Commandos and Peacemaker season 2.
Speaking to Josh Horowitz in an episode of Happy Sad Confused, James Gunn explains how much influence he has over the MCU's Guardians of the Galaxy, itting that he isn't sure whether he's still legally attached to the Guardians of the Galaxy property every time Marvel Studios uses one of the characters, but stating that he's "totally okay" with whatever Marvel decides for each of the Guardians. When asked whether he becomes a producer whenever Marvel Studios uses the Guardians, Gunn says,
"I don't know the exact legal answer to that. I think the answer is actually yes. I' m not sure what the answer is, but listen, I'm excited for them to go do whatever they want to with Guardians. I would love them to take those characters and see more stories with them. Chris (Pratt) has my blessing. Everybody, they all have my blessing. Chris keeps saying 'is this okay?', 'is this okay?', and I'm like 'dude, whatever, like, I'm totally okay with whatever you do... you go do it'. I mean, he's one of my very close friends. I would love to see him be Star-Lord again."
What James Gunn's Comments About Chris Pratt & Other GOTG Actors' MCU Futures Mean
Marvel Is Free To Use The Guardians Of The Galaxy In Multiple Different Projects
James Gunn is undeniably the main creative mind behind the MCU's version of the Guardians of the Galaxy, as he designed their looks and their personalities for their trilogy and Special Presentation. After Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the Guardians will always have James Gunn's signature imprinted on them, but Gunn won't dictate their character arcs. Some of them are bound to appear sooner rather than later, while others probably won't return for a long time, if ever.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Replacement Is Poised To Take On James Gunn
The Marvel Cinematic Universe plans to introduce an exciting and charismatic new team that will be important for future universe stories in July 2025.
As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's ending and post-credits scenes suggest, Rocket Raccoon will be the leader of the new Guardians team, which is composed of Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Phyla-Vell, Adam Warlock and Adam's pet Blurp. Meanwhile, Drax, Mantis, and Gamora's second variant will continue their own stories on their own, and Peter Quill a.k.a "The Legendary Star-Lord" will probably star in his own MCU project, this time set on Earth.
Our Take On James Gunn's Comments About Chris Pratt & Other GOTG Actors' MCU Futures
James Gunn Didn't Always Have Full Control Of The Guardians Of The Galaxy In The DCU
Although the Guardians of the Galaxy were James Gunn's darlings during his time at Marvel, they were also handled by other directors more than once. The Russo Bros. made significant creative decisions regarding the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. When James Gunn wrote and directed the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he didn't know Thanos would eventually kill Gamora, for example, or that Drax ultimately wouldn't play a big role in Thanos' defeat. Likewise, future MCU directors will continue to play with the Guardians without being required to ask James Gunn for his permission.
