A trailer for Jason Momoa's interview with Jason Momoa, will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 1, 2025. It's set on the Hawaiian Islands during the 18th century, centered around a real historical figure named Ka'iana, whom Momoa is playing.

The first look at Chief of War is breathtaking. The immense production value is on full display, with impressive historical battle scenes and even a fight with a shark. The trailer indicates a clear plotline of Kai'iana being forced to choose violence in order to defend his people. Chief of War's highly cinematic quality, poignant storytelling, and gorgeous craftsmanship that went into the project will bring Hawaii's colonization to life on screen from an indigenous perspective, pulling no punches in its depiction of war.

What Chief Of War's Trailer Means For Apple TV+

Apple's Streaming Platform Could Have The Next Shōgun On Its Hands

Hollywood is an industry that was built on historical epics, and while they're few and far between in contemporary cinema, they've begun to find their homes on television. Be it Vikings, Shōgun, or Masters of the Air, stories based on real-world history or historical fiction have found success with longer-form storytelling, with vast resources put behind movie star talent and production value to give these settings the respect they deserve. If Chief of War's trailer is any indication, it will be next in this string of hits.

Our Take On Chief Of War's Trailer

Chief Of War Looks To Be What "See" Fell Short Of

A group, walking together, in Chief of War

From what I can see in the trailer, Chief of War could be the epic TV show Jason Momoa has deserved since stealing the show in Game of Thrones season 1. He's an astounding actor, and I was really hoping for more from Apple TV+'s See when it was announced that he would be starring in a high-budget sci-fi/fantasy show. While the production value behind that show was great, I constantly found the narrative to be lacking.

From what Jason Momoa has said about his ion for this project, the footage we've seen, and from the sheer scope and untapped potential of this historical period, I think Chief of War will be a massive success. I can't wait for the show to premiere, and I'll be watching on day one.
