A storyline from Snoopy arrange for his brother Spike to go live with the Van Pelt family. Since this is Peanuts, things do not go off without a hitch, with Spike even getting lost on the way to Rerun. Moreover, the meeting between Spike and Rerun does not go well, to say the least.

Regardless, all these foibles are funny plotlines that are perfectly in line with the tone of Peanuts' sense of humor and true to its characters. There are numerous storylines in Peanuts with Rerun having a starring role in many storylines throughout the '90s, with the storyline of him and Spike being one of the best.

12 "Dogs Like Cold Cereal"

Peanuts Comic Published May 13, 1996

peanuts rerun wants a dog comic

Rerun has wanted a dog for a very long time. Despite his wishes, his family don't think he's capable of it. Sometimes, Rerun is able to tolerate it but when he sees Charlie Brown walking with his dog Snoopy, Rerun loses his temper. He cannot fathom why everyone else in the entire world gets to have a dog but he can't. Lucy reasons that Rerun would not be able to take care of a dog or even know how to feed it. Rerun does not help his case when he hits back that he could just feed his dog cold cereal. Dogs are not known to eat cold cereal or any kind of ceral for that matter, so he should maybe stop talking before he ruins his chances even more.

Of course, Charlie Brown has been feeding Snoopy chocolate cookies for years - something that would lead to major health complications for a real dog - so even with cold cereal, Rerun wouldn't be the most irresponsible dog owner on the block.

11 "Some Kind Of Survey"

Peanuts Comic Published May 14, 1996

Upset over the reminder that he does not have a dog and Charlie Brown does, Rerun decides to get some answers. He rings the Brown family's doorbell and asks Sally why they have a dog but he does not. Sally does not seem to give him any sort of answer before Rerun walks away. Maybe the poor disappointed kid just wanted to get that off his chest. Regardless, Sally comes back to Charlie Brown and Snoopy, informing them that it was some sort of survey that came to their door.

This is an example of one of Charles M. Schulz's favorite gags - setting up a weird situation or context that the reader understands, then dropping a nonplussed character into the mix who has absolutely no chance of gaining clarity. From Sally's perspective, there's no way to decipher what Rerun is getting at, especially because his question is based on childish logic that doesn't truly make sense.

peanuts rerun wants a dog comic 3

Depressed over not having a dog, Rerun plays pretty much the only hand he has available to him - promising to eat his dinner if his parents will let him have a pet. Typical to Peanuts' long-standing 'no adults' rule, the character's parents aren't shown or heard from, however Schulz's genius is that they don't need to be. Readers know the exact answer Rerun will get to his offer, making him feel all the more forlorn.

Rerun decides he must get crafty if he is ever going to get a dog. ing about Snoopy's brother Spike who lives out in the desert, Rerun lays out his idea for Snoopy - instead of asking for permission, he'll get the dog first and then hope for the best. Suggesting that Spike would have a better home if he lived with the Van Pelts, Rerun makes his case, but Snoopy is not too keen on the idea, making an excuse to leave. His excuse involves food, of course, as it is one of Snoopy's favorite things, acting like he is being called for dinner so he can leave this conversation with the very determined Rerun.

8 "This Was Not My Idea"

Taking a page from his sister Lucy's book, Rerun becomes quite the bossy kid, telling Snoopy that all he has to do is write to Spike. Rerun informs Snoopy to write to Spike that he can be Rerun's dog and all the fun things that will ensue when they are together. Playing it safe, Snoopy's first words in his letter to his brother are to clear himself of blame for the idea. While Snoopy may try to distance himself from Rerun's idea, it shows how close Snoopy is to Rerun that he is willing to write on his behalf at all.

7 "I'm Going To Have A Dog!"

Peanuts Comic Published May 18, 1996

peanuts' rerun considers adopting snoopy's brother spike 3

Spike agrees to live with Rerun. As a result, Rerun is finally getting a dog! He is beyond excited but the rest of the couch is not as thrilled about their new dog that is coming to town. Lucy argues that their mom will never let Rerun keep Spike, not wanting dogs in the home. Meanwhile, poor Linus is nervous that Spike will be the kind of dog that howls at the moon. What none of them know is that Spike is a pretty unusual character, and not the typical household dog they're either expecting or dreading. Snoopy reflects that due to his unusual nature, they should be more worried at the 'off the grid' Spike howling at night lights, not the moon.

6 "I'm Leaving The Desert"

Peanuts Comic Published May 20, 1996

peanuts' rerun considers adopting snoopy's brother spike 4

Spike prepares to leave his home in the desert because he is going to live with some little kid, namely Rerun, but he will miss his cactus buddy. His cactus friend was his only pal out in the desert and basically the only one he would talk to out there in the desolate landscape. Fans know about Spike's isolated nature and his habit of talking to inanimate objects from his prior appearances - the cactus is his best friend, but no character in Peanuts ever has an easy go of it, and Spike ends up losing his hat thanks to the friendly gesture.

5 "Waiting For My New Dog"

Peanuts Comic Published May 21, 1996

peanuts' rerun considers adopting snoopy's brother spike 5

Rerun waits outside his door for Spike to arrive with Snoopy by his side. Lucy, being the Debbie Downer she typically is, questions why they are out there and then says that there is no way for Spike to be able to find him. Rerun rebuts this with the stance that dogs are smart and they can find their way absolutely anywhere. Snoopy ruins this opinion with his struggle to even know where his house is when they live in the same neighborhood.

4 "Hollywood Is In The West"

Peanuts Comic Published May 22, 1996

peanuts' rerun considers adopting snoopy's brother spike 6

As it turns out, Lucy was right and Spike got lost trying to find his way to Rerun's house. Lost out in the desert at night, he re something his brother, which could have been Snoopy, Olaf, Andy, or Marbles, told him to when he was lost which was that Hollywood is in the West and the moon is always over Hollywood. That information does not sound the most scientific, but if it can help Spike out of this jam he has gotten into, then the words of advice paid off. Given that Andy and Olaf are always getting lost and Snoopy has also struggled with getting lost multiple times, even just in his own neighborhood, it is an issue that all the Snoopy siblings seem to have.

3 "Your Dog is Here"

Peanuts Comic Published May 23, 1996

peanuts' rerun adopts snoopy's brother spike

After finding his way when he got lost, the time has come and Spike is finally at the Peanuts neighborhood to meet Rerun. Rerun runs to see his new dog after Lucy announces (loudly) that Spike is here. When he sees his new pup, he is a bit confused and does not know who is standing before him but he does not think it is a dog. Spike has a bit of an unorthodox look, being very thin and always having his hat. Likewise, his whiskers look like a mustache. As a result, Spike has maybe the most anthropomorphic appearance out of all his siblings, even Snoopy. No wonder Rerun is not sure what he's looking at.
