Warning: Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man chapter #191.One of the major plot threads of Chainsaw Man part 2 has been the one-sided conflict between Denji and Yoru the War Devil. Not only is Denji completely unaware of Yoru’s antagonism toward Chainsaw Man, but he’s also unaware that Yoru shares a body with Asa, the other protagonist of part 2, and it’s been the source of plenty of great drama from both parties since part 2’s early days.
As great as the dynamic between Denji and Asa has been, Chainsaw Man is finally giving it a major shakeup. With the end of the Aging Devil arc, the status quo of the overarching story has been completely upended in what will ideally be in a permanent way, and in the first showing of that, Chainsaw Man has finally abandoned the plotline of Denji being unaware of the War Devil and Asa’s part in it all. It’s unknown where, exactly, the story will go from here, but overall, it has plenty of potential to be the manga’s biggest development yet.
How Chainsaw Man Ended One Of Its Longest-Running Plot Threads
Denji Finally Learns The Truth About Asa & Yoru
Chainsaw Man chapter #191 saw the end of Denji being unaware of Yoru and Asa’s relationship, and the way it happened was very simple. After seeing Asa do so many weird things in the Aging Devil arc and hearing about even more, most notably her regrowing her arms and weaponizing the Statue of Liberty, Denji finally saw fit to ask her what her deal was, and from there, Yoru, with no way of keeping up the facade, revealed herself to Denji as Asa’s other personality.
As abrupt as the reveal was, it was something that needed to happen. The constant escalation of Asa and Yoru’s actions in the latest arc is one thing, but Denji’s obliviousness to the weird things Asa was doing had progressed to the point that even Denji should have noticed something a while ago, especially when it was confirmed that Yoru’s scars are visible when she takes over Asa’s body. Chainsaw Man had long since exhausted everything that could be done with Denji’s obliviousness toward Asa and Yoru, and now was the perfect time to put it to a close.
Chainsaw Man’s New Development Sparks Denji’s Biggest Crisis Yet
Why The War Devil Reveal Is A Big Deal For Denji
Asa and Yoru finally revealing the truth about themselves is a major development for Chainsaw Man, especially because of what it means for Denji. Denji and Asa’s relationship has always been complicated by their conflicting personalities and desires coupled with their palpable romantic tension, and that only got worse as Asa, from Denji’s perspective, kept doing increasingly confusing things as his life was getting progressively worse. Now, though, Denji knowing that Asa is working with a Devil who wants nothing more than to see him dead complicates things in a strictly negative manner, and it’s hard to imagine it recovering.
The similarities between Yoru and Makima are an especially big reason why things are so complicated. While Yoru and Makima are undeniably different, with Yoru having zero subtlety in her evil and Makima arguably having some altruistic motivations, at the end of the day, Denji now knows he’s fallen back into a situation of a Devil manipulating him for personal gain without ever thinking about his feelings, which was exactly what Makima put him through. Denji should know that Asa legitimately cares about him, but with Yoru a permanent part of their dynamic, it’s still going to be complicated, nonetheless.
Will Chainsaw Man’s War Devil Reveal Finally Make Denji Grow As A Character?
Is Denji Finally Going To Grow As A Character?
Going off of what Chainsaw Man’s latest development means for Denji, it also invites the question of what sort of character development it can mean for Denji. One criticism people have had about part 2 is how stagnant Denji’s character has been, with him in a constant cycle of trying and failing to be more independent and not be controlled by lust, but now, Denji learning the truth about Yoru and her actions, combined with all the trauma he’s just gone through, is the perfect means of sparking some more permanent growth on his part in Chainsaw Man.
Things might not be that simple, of course. After learning the truth about Yoru, Denji’s only question was which girl pleasured Denji in an alley, and he didn’t hesitate to debase himself to learn the truth at Yoru’s request, so unfortunately, Chainsaw Man might be sticking to not giving Denji significant character development, despite everything that’s happened as of late. It’s still too soon to say anything for sure, of course, but hopefully, there will be far more to expect from Chainsaw Man’s latest development than what the manga has already shown.
