Cyberpunk 2077, which has only recently become playable in the opinion of many fans.
CD Projekt Red rose to prominence through the release of The Witcher trilogy. The first two entries in the franchise, while well-received by many, were dwarfed by the third game when it came to popularity and generally positive reception. While this series has received no shortage of praise for its polished visuals, exceptional writing, and detailed world-building, all three games had some technical shortcomings. This was mirrored and exacerbated in Cyberpunk 2077 DLC could make the game even better - but some players have become wary of CD Projekt Red's development cycle.
Those fans might be happy to learn that the recently announced next chapter in The Witcher franchise will be moving on from the REDengine. The reveal of the new game on The Witcher Twitter was accompanied by the announcement that the studio would be using Unreal Engine 5 for this new game and working closely with Epic Games. A press release shared by CD Projekt Red PR Director Radek Grabowski goes into more depth about the decision, stating that the partnership was made in the interest of having access to cutting-edge technology and setting the technical groundwork for the game as early as possible. The forthcoming expansions for Cyberpunk 2077 will still be based in the REDengine.
Cyberpunk 2077's countless glitches and performance problems might have impacted this decision, though CDPR also announced that Cyberpunk would remain on REDengine. While the game, especially after its most recent update, can be visually stunning at times, it was chock-full of bugs upon release. Moreover, it seemed like gamers playing on anything other than the most high-end PCs had consistent trouble with performance. By utilizing the fifth iteration of a widely used games engine, CD Projekt Red's next game in The Witcher franchise might be more polished and better optimized.
Unsurprisingly, fans have been reading into this partnership with CD Projekt Red and Epic Games. Many responses to the company's Tweets are voicing concerns about the next entry in The Witcher franchise being an Epic Store exclusive, but CD Projekt Red has denied that that will happen. It seems like it's still very early days in the development of this new game, so only time will tell how this partnership with Epic will shake out.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
