Pixar has teamed up with Porsche to create a real-life version of a beloved Pixar is known for their acclaimed movies, releasing 26 feature films to date. Their output includes Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, Up, Soul, and more. Achieving much success, many of the studio's productions have not just earned nominations for, but actually won Oscars, Grammys, and other prestigious awards. Many have also spawned their own franchises of sequels, prequels, and spinoff series and shorts, such as Toy Story and Cars.
The Cars franchise began with the 2006 film of the same name and features a world populated by anthropomorphic vehicles, with a focus on the lead character, rookie race car, Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson). While the Cars movie aren't as universally beloved as other Pixar titles, the property has proven to be financially successful, with the original film spawning two sequels, multiple TV series, short films, a Planes spinoff, and lots of merchandise. Now, its impact will continue to be felt via a new charitable initiative.
Now per Porsche, Pixar has teamed up with Porsche to create a special car inspired by one of the most beloved 911 models of all—Sally Carrera, the 2002 blue Porsche 911 Carrera, from Disney and Pixar’s Cars. Named the "911 Sally Special," this real-life Sally Carrera car is the only one that will ever be made. Fully personalized, created, and built by Porsche and a team of Pixar staff, the car notably comes in the custom color "Sally Blue Metallic." It will be sold by RM Sotheby’s, classic car auction company, on August 20 at Monterey Car Week in Monterey, CA. The proceeds from the auction will go entirely to two charities—Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Read a statement on the real-life car's conception from Dr. Sebastian Rudolph, Vice President Communications, Sustainability and Politics at Porsche AG below:
"Vehicles need a face and a story. And Pixar’s film Cars did just that, by bringing them to life on the big screen. The story conveys values such as friendship, love and mutual – and in the middle of it all is a Porsche: 'Sally Carrera.' Together with Pixar we have brought the spirit of Sally to life in a new way, not on the screen, but off the screen. With this one-off street legal 911, the Sally Special, which we are auctioning for charity, we want to help people who urgently need , quite in keeping with the spirit of the film character."
In addition to the one-of-a-kind car, the winning bidder on the "911 Sally Special" will receive other special, mostly-handmade, items created during the car's building, including a matching Porsche Design watch, the original color molds used to finalize the car's paint, the show plates for the car, a book chronicling the car's design and development, and other items that are also one-of-a-kind. Being such a unique package, this creation marks the first time Pixar has participated on such a project. While there have been auctions and collaborations curated by Pixar before, this is the first, in creating a new, one-of-a-kind and high-end product, inspired by one of their characters and whose proceeds will go to charities.
Girls Inc. is a non-profit that inspires girls to be strong, smart, and bold through direct service and advocacy. USA for UNHCR is a UN Refugee Agency working to provide urgent help to nearly 6.2 million refugees who have been displaced across Europe since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The entirety of the "911 Sally Special's" auction sales going to these organizations makes this the latest entertainment-related auction for a cause. It's similar to the Matrix props auction put up by the Wachowskis, whose proceeds went to Protect & Defend Trans Youth Fund, which aids young trans people targeted by state legislature across the U.S. This Cars auction isn't just auctioning off a really cool item, but it's giving back to good causes too.
