Operator Roze's blacked-out Rook skin in Call of Duty's microtransactions only applies to cosmetic items, which largely keeps pay-to-win concerns at bay. Yet, some Battle cosmetics have been accused of being too overpowered.
The Gallantry MAC-10 SMG blueprint serves as but one of the more recent examples. Compared to its counterpart's standard version, the weapon proved far more powerful. Following the outcry of Call of Duty: Warzone players, developer Raven Software released a hotfix to nerf the gun in question. But it appears pay-to-win concerns as a whole have yet to truly subside, since Operator Roze's all-black Rook skin is now mired in controversy.
Because's Roze's Rook skin is completely coated in black, anyone who brings her onto the battlefield automatically receives a tactical advantage. This especially holds true in darker environments, where the cosmetic in question becomes the perfect camouflage. And now, as reported by Season 5 Battle reward several months ago; thus, outrage over the cosmetic's overpowered qualities eventually died down. Roze's Rook attire returned to the forefront, though, due in large part to its use in the $250,000 Twitch Rivals tournament. As a result, fans are calling for Raven Software to remove the skin outright.
These unfortunate circumstances are unlikely to force Activision and Raven to remove Roze's Rook cosmetic, since those who own the skin had to purchase it in a Battle . But the pay-to-win accusations could pressure Raven to somehow nerf its effects in matches, perhaps by altering the design with added color or reflective elements. Prohibiting the skin from tournament use could also go along way in evening the odds.
Overly powerful items in need of nerfing are becoming all too common in Call of Duty: Warzone. In addition to issues with the Mac-10 SMG blueprint, another Warzone patch recently Black Ops Cold War and Warzone integration has put the latter in a rather difficult spot of late.
Call of Duty: Warzone is playable now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
