A rumor is circulating that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare could be coming to Nintendo Switch consoles. If true, this will mark the first appearance of the Call Of Duty franchise on the Nintendo Switch.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare has been a favorite amongst fans and critics since its original release as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, a game that marked the franchise's first foray into stories outside of World War 2, and introduced several fan-favorite characters such as Captain Price and Captain "Soap" MacTavish throughout the course of the series. Since then, the Modern Warfare timeline has become a mainstay of the franchise, offering up two main sequels and a 2019 reboot. Treyarch developed a Nintendo Wii port for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, known as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex in 2009, however, the version rumored to be coming to Nintendo Switch will be the 2016 Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered version.
The rumors of Modern Warfare Remastered's impending Switch release came from known Call Of Duty leaker naming World at War, Call of Duty 1 & 2, and backwards compatibility for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered as the games being actively discussed. On top of this, he posted that "[Modern Warfare Remastered] is supposedly coming to Nintendo Switch". This would make Modern Warfare Remastered the first Call Of Duty title to appear on the Nintendo Switch, which sparked some doubt in the thread, with other Twitter s such as jellomaster00 pointing out that "the game is around 75 GB, how will that work?" This large file size could indicate a Cloud-based release much like Hitman 3 or Control's releases on the Nintendo Switch; however, as this is all currently a rumor, nothing has been confirmed.
RalphsValve's tweets do seem to align with Microsoft president Brad Smith's previous comments about how he wanted to bring the Call of Duty series to the Nintendo Switch. Smith made these comments shortly after Microsoft announced its plans to acquire Call Of Duty developer Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion in January 2022. At this time he also confirmed that despite Microsoft owning the franchise, future releases would remain multi-platform, and would not become Xbox or PC exclusives.
If these rumors are true, a release of one of the most popular Call Of Duty games would be a huge win for Nintendo fans, who have long wished for the popular first-person shooter franchise to come to the hugely successful Nintendo Switch. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's alleged port would also allow for players to enjoy a Call Of Duty game on the go on a handheld console for the first time since the Nintendo DS and PS Vita era, with the only current portable alternative being the free-to-play Call Of Duty: Mobile on mobile devices.
