Information about the 2022 installment for the Activision’s plans for the series.
Released in 2019, Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare is the most successful entry into the Call of Duty series to date, and is among the top 20 best-selling games of all time, having sold over 30 million units. Returning to the beloved Modern Warfare branch of Call of Duty, the 2019 game retcons the events of the previous Modern Warfare games, placing it in a completely different timeline. While the title was generally well-received by fans and critics, it was not without controversy for its depiction of child soldiers, as well as Modern Warfare's use of white phosphorus on enemies, which is considered to be a violation of the laws of armed conflict.
Industry insider Tom Henderson posted a Tweet claiming that Activision’s 2022 entry into the Call of Duty franchise will be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare by Infinity Ward. The codename for 2022's Call of Duty was also revealed to be named “Project Cortez.” Henderson’s claims add to rumors shared in early August by another Call of Duty insider, which alleged that Infinity Ward’s progress on the Modern Warfare sequel was well ahead of its schedule.
This news comes shortly after the Fable 4, currently called “Project Holland,” with “Project Cortez” being listed under Activision Blizzard as its publisher, and Infinity Ward listed as its developer.
While Henderson’s rumors certainly line up with the information revealed in Nvidia’s GeForce Now leak, the fact that remains is that it is all speculation until it’s confirmed by Activision. Considering that Call of Duty: Vanguard is still a few months from release, it’s doubtful that the company would want to announce anything that would shift attention away from this year’s entry into the series. Should the rumors hold, it will be interesting to see how the Modern Warfare sequel will fare after the departure of two key Infinity Ward developers earlier this year.
