While there's likely going to be some disconnect between fans of the original series and the new generation, there are ways to connect the Buffy-verse and create some cohesion. Sarah Michelle Gellar has stated that she won't be in the Buffy reboot, but that doesn't mean other characters couldn't resurface. One that makes the most sense would be Rupert Giles, Buffy's loyal Watcher and father-figure, who could continue his Slayer's legacy, even though she is unlikely to appear.

According to Owusu-Breen, the world seems "a lot scarier" twenty years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer fought her last battle on the small screen; perhaps that is even more reason to bring aboard a seasoned Watcher with strong, paternal tendencies to guide not only a new Slayer, but a generation of new young people who need to learn to navigate a very different world than the one he helped Buffy through years ago.
