With the return of Buffy episodes prove why it’s still so popular, so it’s no surprise that the hit supernatural drama is coming back to screens in the near future, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as the titular Slayer: Buffy Summers.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival is one that audiences have been begging for, but in order for it to be successful, it’s important that Hulu ensures the show keeps the same charm and appeal that the original is best known for. As we prepare to revisit Buffy and, presumably, Sunnydale, there are crucial factors of the show that need to be implemented in the reboot.

8 Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Great, But Buffy's Reboot Needs The Entire Scooby Gang Back

What's New With The Likes Of Willow And Xander?

There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of excitement for the return of the titular character, but the reason why Buffy the Vampire Slayer is so endearing is because of the Scooby Gang. Buffy Summers dies three times in Buffy and thankfully comes back, but sadly, some of the Scooby Gang don’t. Hopefully, we’ll see deceased characters like Anya Jenkins and Cordelia Chase make an appearance, whether that’s as a form of spirit or because Buffy revives them somehow.

Along with bringing back Sarah Michelle Gellar, the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot will keep an important aspect of the original series.

It’s important that we see Giles, Willow, and Xander specifically. While the Scooby Gang changes a few times throughout the show, these three are the most consistent. All of them are crucial figures during Buffy’s formative years, and are just generally intriguing characters overall, so it just wouldn’t make any sense for them to not make some sort of appearance. At this time, we don’t know too much about the story of the Buffy reboot, but it would be a silly mistake for Hulu to not bring these characters back.

7 We Need To Know What Buffy's Adult Life Has Been Like Since Season 7

Who Is The Slayer Now?

While it’s a given, it’s really important that Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot gets Buffy’s story after the events of the finale right. The last episode heavily leans into Buffy’s responsibilities and powers as the Slayer and how she doesn’t truly want them, but she still makes sure to help save the world with the Scooby Gang one last time. But what now? Who is Buffy Summers in the 2020s?

There are endless routes that Buffy could be taking now, and out of everything the revival could cover, this is the thing I’m most excited for.

Buffy was around 22 in the finale, which makes her roughly 35 in 2025. Being in your mid-30s compared to being a teenager is a very different experience, and hopefully the Buffy reboot will delve further into what Buffy’s life is like for her almost two decades after the show’s end. There are endless routes that Buffy could be taking now, and out of everything the revival could cover, this is the thing I’m most excited for.

6 An Update On Willow's Life Post-Tara

Does The Witch Ever Get Over The Death Of Her Girlfriend Fully?

One of the most defining moments of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and one that continues to garner attention even years later, is Tara’s death. I’m still heartbroken that Buffy plays into the “bury your gays trope,” especially as Willow and Tara are one of the very best LGBTQ+ couples in TV history. While Willow soldiers on after her girlfriend is killed in season 6’s finale, it's important that the Buffy reboot acknowledges this.

The "bury your gays" trope is one of Hollywood's most prevalent in LGBTQ+ stories. Here is a complete explanation of its meaning and its history.

Tara’s death is one of the most notable moments in the show, and even though the revival will be set years after the event, there’s no way that it still doesn’t affect Willow. Grief is a funny thing and never really goes away, and while I don’t expect Willow to still be in the depths of her trauma, I can’t see a way for her to be included without mentioning Tara. The Buffy comics amazingly see Willow and Tara reunited and be mothers to their daughter, and I’d love for this to be implemented into the revival somehow, too.

5 We Need To Know Giles' Fate

Is The Watcher Still Training Slayers?

Giles leaves and returns to England in Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5, but comes back for the finale to help in the battle. While Angel establishes that Giles is training more Slayers in Europe with Buffy, we don’t know how long he does this for. Is he now retired, or is Giles the Sunnydale Watcher we know and love still? I’ll be sad if it turns out that Giles and Buffy aren’t in anymore, and it would be strange if so, but at the same time, the two reuniting is a great potential story for the Buffy reboot.

Another main plotline the Buffy reboot could possibly explore is Buffy stepping into Giles’ shoes and overseeing a new Slayer. Giles is a brilliant mentor, and Buffy could also be a good one as well, but it’s likely that she’ll need to seek advice. A Buffy reboot won’t be the same without Giles, and he needs to come back, regardless of how or why.

4 A Spike & Angel Reunification

Where Are The Vampires Now?

Spike, Angel, and Buffy are a Angel’s finale ends on a cliffhanger, Spike and Angel are a team again, but the vague ending that suggests their escapades and battles will continue isn’t enough for viewers.

While there is the issue surrounding the fact that vampires do not age, it doesn’t mean the two vampires can’t come back in the Buffy revival. Buffy Summers is such an important person in both of their centuries-long lives, and it would be strange if neither of them at least check in on her every now and then.

3 Comic Book Lore

Could The Buffy Reboot Introduce A New Slayer?

There are some amazing moments in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, but I love that the additional media introduces different canon and timelines for the characters. For example, there are stories in which Willow is named the Slayer, Xander becomes a vampire, and even one where Tara and Willow have a daughter. While it’s likely the Buffy reboot will just stick to the TV show canon, I wouldn’t complain if Thessaly Maclay Rosenberg does make an appearance on-screen as a new Slayer.

Another great piece of Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic lore is that Giles dies and is resurrected as a kid, which is an interesting way the reboot could introduce a new generation of the Scooby Gang, with young Giles still serving as the Watcher, but this time to Slayer Thessaly. Although not all the comic book canon happens in one timeline, there’s no reason the TV show couldn’t take inspiration from these narratives, make some alterations, and interweave them.

2 Slice Of Life Moments

Who Are Buffy And Co. Now, Regardless Of Whether They're Fighting Demons Or Not?

Something I often notice when rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer is that it’s very much a product of its time, especially when it comes to general pop culture references and the characters’ use of dialect. While the Buffy reboot isn’t going to be all ‘90s related, I think it’ll be interesting to see just who these ‘90s characters are in the present day. One of the reasons Buffy is such a huge success isn’t just because of the demons and supernatural lore, it’s also because the titular character and her friends are just regular teenagers.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's reboot will inevitably reignite a longstanding fandom debate, but there is no better time to face this question head-on.

It’s important that the original Scooby Gang comes back, granted, but I’m specifically intrigued to learn more about their lives after the finale. Are they all still involved in slaying activities? Is Willow still practicing magic? Or are they regular people with standard jobs, and their past escapades are just fond memories of their youth? I’d love to see some slice of life moments that demonstrate this, especially as it will expand upon their existing characterizations and fill in some of the gaps for viewers.

1 The Return Of Some Of Buffy's More Underrated Villains

Are Any Of Buffy's Antagonists Plotting Revenge?

There are some fabulous villains that Buffy the Vampire Slayer underutilizes during its run. One perfect Buffy villain from season 5 I’d love to see is Glory, for instance. While Glory is the main antagonist of season 5 and features quite a bit, the show doesn’t use her to her full potential, either. Considering she is a god from Hell who is trapped in the body of a human, Glory has an edge that other Buffy villains don’t.

Vampires are powerful, so it would make sense if the Master alters his appearance to hide in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.

The Master, who also appears in Angel, is another major Buffy the Vampire Slayer villain. As the show’s very first “Big Bad,” the Master deserves a chance to return, too. The ancient vampire is supposedly the oldest on record, which offers Buffy’s reboot the opportunity to present the Master to old and new audiences in whatever way they choose. He can easily slip into any surrounding, and it’s even possible the titular character won’t even recognize him. Vampires are powerful, so it would make sense if the Master alters his appearance to hide in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
