For the last seven years, fans have had the pleasure of watching the romance between Amy and Jake blossom on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Although they shouldn't have worked since their interests didn't match on paper, Jake and Amy defied expectations when fans witnessed the positive influence they had on one another.
Not only is their work partnership a force to be reckoned with but their personal relationship allowed the viewers to see how well they balanced each other out. But haven't fans ever wondered what would have happened if the writers decided to not pair them together? Who Amy could have ended up with if they took a different direction? Here are a few potential candidates...
Dr. Ronald Yee
One of the character Amy could have ended up with was Dr. Ronald Yee, the entomologist who has visited the precinct several occasions. Over his two appearances, fans have seen Amy express excitement over Yee's arrival, calling him a "rock star" and praising him for revolutionizing "the field of forensic entomology."
She was also seen to be avidly interested in his courses, participating in his forensic science seminar and experimenting with his breed blood-detecting flies. Since they shared a lot of ions and interests, it's possible that this is a relationship that would have lasted.
Eddie Fung
Although Eddie Fung has yet to make his debut as an adult, could fans imagine what would have happened if the writers had paired him with Amy? There was a lot of comedic potential here - especially if Jake found out that Amy had been dating his childhood nemesis.
Since Jake reveals that he lives in New York, it is possible that she could have run into Eddie at some point or another. If the writers had expanded on Amy and Jake's friendship more, she could have used her relationship to help Jake get closure.
Kendrick
Another person Amy could have ended up with is Kendrick, the Homeland Security agent that ran the multi-agency counter-terrorism drill back in season 2. Since Amy had once considered transferring from the precinct, what if she had decided her future was with Homeland Security?
If she did transfer, Amy could have worked and helped Kendrick with several investigations. Since he and Jake share the same egotistical traits, Amy could have also encouraged the agent to be more comionate and selfless.
Luke
Another person Amy could have ended up with was Luke, a colleague of Kylie, who set them up for a date. Back in season 1, fans may Jake rescheduling Amy's date with Luke after she was forced to cancel the first time around. From his profile, the viewers learned that Luke was an avid fan of music and a "football stadium design."
It was clear to see that he made a good impression on Amy as she complimented his written grammar and kindness. She also expressed her excitement about them going to dinner and a movie, describing it as a perfect date. It would have been good if the writers had explored this relationship more.
Gabe
One of the first people Amy dated in the series was Gabe. There is a possibility that Kylie also set this date up as Gabe and Amy are seen briefly talking about the Department of Records employee in the beginning.
While fans know little about Gabe, he did leave a good impression as he was seen to be respectable and polite. By his interaction with Jake, he also seemed to be a friendly guy. If the show didn't plan on pairing Amy with Jake, they could have revisited this plot.
Teddy Wells
Before the show decided to make Teddy go full-on stalker with Amy, there was a time where fans believed he and Amy would go the distance. Most people will agree that the Teddy they saw in season 1 and 2 was a pretty good guy. Although he was deemed boring by the squad, he always treated them with respect and kindness.
Since the core reason for their breakup was because Amy had feelings for Jake, they may have still been together today. Especially if Teddy decided to inject more spontaneity into the relationship and dropped the jazz brunches.
Gary Jennings
Often called the male Santiago by the squad, Gary is another person who would have been a perfect match for Amy. He was enthusiastic to learn, ionate about his job, and was a helpful asset. Similar to Amy's style, Jennings was also well-organized and a regular reader of Stationary Monthly.
If Amy had met him before she became his boss, the two would have definitely become fast friends. Gary would have probably attended the handshake seminar and power pose TED Talk with her too. Could you imagine how efficient their partnership would have been?
Rosa Diaz
In another lifetime, Amy and Rosa could have been the precinct's power couple. Other than Jake, Rosa was the other person who knew Amy like the back of her hand. She knew all of her quirks and eccentricities, as well as her ticks and bad habits. Rosa and Amy also had an exceptional work partnership, with their chemistry on full display when they teamed up on cases and heists.
If the writers had decided to take their relationship to the next level, it wouldn't have been hard since it was built on a solid friendship and respect. The Sleuth Sisters would have taken the show by storm.
Dave Majors
Just before Amy and Jake began dating, the writers teased fans with another love interest when they suggested Amy and Dave Majors could get together. As fans know, Dave was a hotshot detective who was an idol of Amy's. When they first met, Amy had been desperate to impress with her "notebook flip" and catchphrases.
It was easy to see the chemistry between the two detectives, as both Dave and Amy's partnership worked just as well as hers with Jake. Add to the fact that they had some of the highest arrest records in the NYPD, Dave and Amy could have also taken New York by storm.
Melvin Stermley
If there was one person (other than Jake) who would have been a great match for Amy, it would have been Melvin Stermley. First seen in season 5, Melvin was revealed to be a puzzle maker who would create crosswords for a newspaper publication.
Here, he helped Amy and Jake with a serial arson case after the two detectives linked his crosswords to several fires. Amy was quite excited to be working with Melvin, complimenting his work and laughing at his anagram quips. Melvin was also friendly and acted respectably towards Amy's co-workers. which are traits she ired. If fans couldn't have Jake, they would have been happy with Amy and Vin getting together.
