While it remains a mystery exactly how Phillips' new character will shake up the Bridgerton dynamic, the character is being positioned as a key love interest for Penelope. Read Phillips' comments on Lord Debling below:
“Lord Debling is seen as an outsider. He lives on the fringes of society, and he is after a love match this season; he’s after someone who goes against the grain, someone who is a little bit of an outsider like him. And he spots Penelope. He thinks she’s special because she’s sort of seen as an outsider too. Lord Debling is interested in other things outside of the norms of society. For instance, he loves wildlife, he’s a conservationist, and he is a vegetarian.”
What To Expect From Bridgerton Season 3
Penelope Will Be A Big Focus In The New Episodes
The Bridgerton season 2 ending sets up an emotional and dramatic season to come, with Penelope's Whistledown alter ego causing a serious falling out with Eloise (Claudia Jessie). Not only does Penelope's friendship with Eloise take a hit, but she's left heartbroken after she overhears Colin (Luke Newton) say that he would never court her. In Quinn's books, the love story between Penelope and Colin is an important one, and season 3 seems like it will be diving into this head on.
While Eloise makes clear that she's interested in pursuing other friendships and connections outside of Penelope following the big Lady Whistledown reveal, an image from season 3 has already teased that the two characters will be coming face-to-face for a tense reunion in the batch of episodes. Penelope's romantic life will be a big focus as she balances Colin and Lord Debling, but the character will seemingly also be attempting to mend her friendship with Eloise.
In addition to Coughlan, Jessie, and Newton, audiences can expect to see some a number of familiar faces in the Bridgerton season 3 cast. Julie Andrews is returning to voice Lady Whistledown, with other returning stars including: Ruth Gemmell as Violet, Jonathan Bailey as Anthony, Florence Hunt as Hyacinth, and Will Tilston as Gregory. Phillips is one of several newcomers in season 3, including Daniel Francis, James Phoon, and Hannah Dodd, who is taking over the role of sca from Ruby Stokes.
Bridgerton season 3 is set to release on Netflix on May 16.
