Summary

  • Naruto's bad parenting style causes lack of communication and understanding with his kids, especially regarding important family history like Kurama.
  • Himawari's lack of knowledge about Kurama as a jinchuriki shows Naruto's failure as a parent to share crucial family information.
  • Sharing family history is crucial in Boruto's world; Naruto's failure to inform Himawari risks a dangerous situation for the Uzumaki family.

Few things are more important in the Boruto continuum than one's clan or family. Nobody should understand this axiom more than Naruto Uzumaki, the orphan who suffered tremendously on of his lack of family. However, despite that experience, Naruto has failed to be the parent to his children that he always wished he had as a child, and a recent revelation regarding Himawari and Kurama confirms that.

While Naruto loves his kids and wants the best for them, his parenting style and his inability or unwillingness to change it provide plenty of evidence of bad parenting. One of Boruto's primary complaints about his father was that he was unable to figure out the right "work-life" balance, and when given a choice, he chose work over life. As a younger shinobi, Boruto was fond of saying that Naruto was always too busy as the Hokage, to spend quality time with him.

Another area of Naruto's parenting that Boruto often pointed to as being broken was his communication style. To be sure, the older Naruto seems more comfortable talking with Shikamaru about ways to enhance Konoha's security than having any relaxed and heartfelt conversation with Boruto. Story-wise, since it was Boruto who was making these complaints, the focus was mainly on situations involving him and his father. Few if any scenes focused on how Naruto might have similarly treated his daughter Himawari.

In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #10, fans finally see a glimpse of how Naruto's parenting style affected Himawari, and as with Boruto, it illustrates just how bad Naruto was as a parent, especially in his inability to effectively connect and communicate with his children. This point is revealed in Himawari's near-total lack of knowledge and understanding of Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Beast.

Kurama, you - you're the Biju that used to be inside my dad, right. What are you doing here? What exactly is going on? Why is this happening? - Himawari to Kurama

If there is any family history that the Uzumaki kids need to be aware of, it is Kurama. Kurama not only brought Himawari grandparents together, as revealed in the excellent Minato spinoff manga, but also was the major factor in their deaths. It was also responsible for numerous harms inflicted upon Konoha Village. It was also the basis for much of the discrimination and hostility that Naruto suffered throughout his life. Conversely, Kurama also played a significant factor in many of Naruto's successes.

In other words, Kurama is one of the most important ever pieces of Uzumaki family history. It's history that Naruto should have communicated to Himawari early, often, and in detail. Kurama was present in Naruto when she was born, so there should have been an urgency to tell Himawari what that could mean for Naruto. Simply knowing that Kurama was "inside" Naruto does nothing to help Himawari understand her role as a jinchuriki, Kurama's legacy, and the true meaning of his unexplained return.

Kurama Is a Key Part of the Uzumaki Family History

Himawari Has Become a Jinchuriki Without Enough Knowledge or Training

To be sure, it is the legacy of Kurama that should have triggered Naruto to tell Boruto and Himawari about the Nine-Tails sooner rather than later or never. First, there's the fact that Himawari's grandmother Kushina was the jinchuriki for Kurama. As a result, she was once kidnapped by a group of bandit shinobi intent on drawing out Kurama. Himawari's grandfather, Minato, helped in her rescue, which played a large role in their courtship. Minato spent years developing the Rasengan in part to protect Kushina and himself from the power of Kurama.

Kurama also played a role in Naruto's birth when Obito sought to take advantage of Kushina's weakened state during pregnancy to draw out the Nine-Tails. He succeeded and that led to untold death and destruction within Konoha Village. It also led to Himawari's grandparents sacrificing themselves to reseal Kurama inside Naruto. Kurama therefore, is a crucial piece of family history that needed to be told to Himawari. Even if Naruto didn't predict that Kurama could be reborn inside Himawari, it seems odd that he didn't tell his sons about the reality of being a jinchuriki, or how to handle Kurama's power.

In a world where clans and their legacy matter so much, the only way a character can successfully leverage the full weight of their family's power, influence, or ability is if there is a deep sense of loyalty among . Only with that unity can a family - or any of its - act decisively in the face of adversity. But this is only possible through the unambiguous sharing of the family's distinctive history and culture. Not only does this facilitate a sense of belonging and purpose among family , but it also informs them of their heritage - warts and all.

One hallmark of good parenting is putting one's children in the best position to succeed. While this undertaking involves a range of ideas, actions, and practices, it certainly includes parents effectively communicating with their children. As Boruto: Two Blue Vortex makes clear, Naruto - and Hinata - failed to provide Himawari with the information she needed to know about Kurama. If she learned about Kurama earlier, she may have been able to access its powers and abilities way before her would-be rescuer Inojin was seemingly killed in front of her eyes.

More ominously, Naruto's failure to teach Himawari about Kurama risks an unrestrained Nine-Tails operating through an inexperienced girl who potentially has access to all that the Uzumaki and Hyuga Clans can bring to bear. It's a scenario in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex that's perhaps even scarier than having the sentient God trees run rampant - and could have been avoided with a touch of good parenting.
