Sean Patrick Flanery confirms that production on The Boondock Saints 3 was officially announced in 2021, with both Flanery and Reedus returning. However, updates beyond that have been slow.
During a recent Q&A moderated by Screen Rant's own Jeff Heller, Flanery was asked if he could provide any additional information about part 3 of the franchise after Reedus confirmed to Screen Rant that the film was actually happening. While he could not share any more specific details, he was able to confirm that he had received word from Reedus the previous day about the production window. Here's what Flanery had to say:
That motherf***er text me last night. He's one of my best friends. Solid dude. I can't say that about a lot of people in Hollywood, but that is a solid motherf***er. One of the best dudes in Hollywood, and he's been a dear friend of mine since ’94. We shot that in ’99… We're shooting between March and August.
What This Production Window Means For The Boondock Saints Franchise
Expect The Boondock Saints To Return In 2026
The Boondock Saints was released in 1999, and in the 25 years since its release, it has earned a dedicated following. The film, which also starred Willem Dafoe as an FBI agent tailing the brothers, was a critical and financial disappointment. Its very limited theatrical run only allowed it to earn back a small fraction of its $6 million budget, but thanks to an exclusive distribution deal through Blockbuster Video, the DVD of the film resulted in a strong word-of-mouth campaign.
With filming taking place next year, it seems likely that the movie won't release until 2026.
The confirmation from Flanery that production on the third movie will begin within half of a year from now should please those who have helped give the films their cult status. The Boondock Saints 3 has been on a long development journey, and it is a testament to those who love the franchise that the movie is even happening at all. With filming taking place next year, it seems likely that the movie won't release until 2026.
Our Take On The Boondock Saints 3 Production Window
They Are Doing It For The Fans
Since the release of the original Boondock Saints, Reedus has catapulted into Hollywood A-list status, thanks to his star-turning role in AMC's blockbuster series The Walking Dead. While much of Flanery's commercial success pre-dates Boondock Saints, he has recently received praise for his role in the horror thriller Nefarious, and has recently earned an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Daytime Drama Series at the 46th Annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his role in The Bay.
Reedus currently stars on the Walking Dead spinoff revolving around his character, Daryl Dixon.
With both of the actors being so well-regarded these days, it would seem that making a third film right now while both stars are on a bit of an upswing makes sense. However, the main motivation for making The Boondocks Saints 3 at all would seem to be to reward those who have stuck with the films and made them cult favorites in the last quarter-century. It would be easy for the creative team to put the movie aside after all this time, but their commitment to making it happen shows how much they respect their fanbase and their dedication to telling another great story.
