Therefore, Mickey 17 is even more exciting after Joon-ho received so much acclaim for Parasite.
Bong Joon-ho's Parasite Is The Best Psychological Thriller Of The Past Decade
Parasite Is A Shocking Movie
Parasite takes place in South Korea and follows the Kim family, who struggle to make ends meet and live in a very tiny basement apartment. However, the four of the Kim family plan a scheme to earn jobs within the household of the Park family, who are very wealthy. Mickey 17 Looks Nothing Like Bong Joon-ho's $262 Million Oscar Winner & That's Great
Bong Joon-ho's next project is the sci-fi film Mickey 17, which looks completely different from his Oscar-winning movie, and that's great.
Not only is Parasite one of the best psychological thrillers to be released in recent years, it is arguably one of the best movies of all time. Upon its release, Parasite received worldwide acclaim and even won Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards. Additionally, Joon-ho won Best Director for his work on Parasite. Even though he was an acclaimed filmmaker before the 2019 psychological thriller was released, Parasite made Joon-ho a mainstream director.
Mickey 17 Has The Potential To Be Even Better Than Parasite
Mickey 17 Seems To Be Completely Different From Parasite
Joon-ho's follow-up to Parasite, Mickey 17, comes out 6 years after his Oscar-winning masterpiece. Mickey 17 is a black comedy science fiction film that seems to be completely different from Parasite. Joon-ho completely changing genres for his next film proves that he is a director who is willing to take risks with his projects. It would have been easy for Joon-ho to follow-up Parasite with a similar film, but instead he is exploring a different kind of story.
Whereas Parasite focuses on multiple of two different families, Mickey 17 primarily follows one character. However, Mickey Barnes is a character who struggles on Earth, which is why he decides to leave the planet and become an expendable employee. Therefore, similar themes of class that were at the forefront in Parasite could also be explored in Mickey 17. Mickey 17's significantly higher budget and ambitious story suggests it could potentially be even better than Parasite, which would be an amazing accomplishment for Joon-ho.
Mickey 17 Topping Parasite Would Cement Bong Joon-ho As One Of Cinema's Greatest-Ever Directors
Bong Joon-ho Has Directed Several Critically-Acclaimed Movies
After Parasite, Joon-ho's next project is highly-anticipated. Parasite and Joon-ho's Oscar win for the film turned him into one of the most buzzworthy directors currently working. This is why he went from directing Parasite, which had a relatively small budget of $11.4 million, to Mickey 17, which has a massive budget of $150 million. After the success of Parasite, it will be exciting to see what Joon-ho can do with a significantly higher budget. The success of Mickey 17 could grant Joon-ho the freedom to tell many more interesting stories.

Even though Parasite turned Joon-ho into a mainstream director, he was not an overnight success. Several of Joon-ho's movies, such as the aforementioned Memories of Murder, Snowpiercer, and Okja, have incredible reviews. These movies prove that Joon-ho has been telling unique stories as a director for many years. However, six years after receiving immense acclaim for Parasite, the success of Mickey 17 would cement Joon-ho as one of the best directors in history.
