Classic horror movies of the '70s and memorable horror movies of all time. From the jump scares to the truly stomach-churning, disturbing moments, Blumhouse keeps reinventing the horror genre. Its latest movie, The Black Phone, will hopefully include some new twists.
Now that everyone is aware of their scariest scenes, what is some of Blumhouse's strangest film scenes? Sometimes, a weird scene doesn't have to be one of the most frightening. It just has to make the viewer question the meaning behind the scene, such as why it was even done in the first place. Or, perhaps a weird scene could be a sight that audiences think is just odd to watch. Is it frightening or just questionable? Here are some of Blumhouse's weirdest horror scenes.
Cecilia Floating In Air Fighting Adrien - The Invisible Man
Although this scene makes sense being that it's about an invisible man, it's still weird to watch Cecilia float around mid-air getting choked, thrown and pinned down by her psychotic ex-boyfriend. The scene is obviously necessary to convey the character's unbelievable experience with Adrien's tech-savvy invisible suit.
Nevertheless, many viewers still found it strange to watch the character look like she's flying or floating. Turning off the sound would just show her in a weird airborne struggle.
The Chess Board Prison Ground - Halloween (2018)
This must have been a clear choice by the film's production team because how on earth would a prison and/or psychiatric hospital have a red chess (or checker) board ground? Some may have an actual argument behind this such as how the prisoner characters in this particular scene need to be physically separated. But why would the floor be colored red, and specifically, as one big chess board?
There is no question that this scene was executed well, though. Holding up the classic mask to Michael Myers' hidden face is the perfect build-up scene that makes viewers hang on the edge of their seat. The only distraction is this odd floor design choice. A lot of viewers have questioned this specific choice, wondering what the meaning of it is.
Ma Taking Her Disturbing Group Photo - Ma
Blumhouse's signature of blending the horrific and the weird is right here in this brief scene when "Ma" forces one of the teens to snap a photo of her smiling with the others. The weird part of this family photo is that the teens have individually been tortured in some way, including a sewn-shut mouth.
The scene intends to scare its viewers to seeing who this monstrous character really is, but it's also just odd to see her smile on a couch next to unconscious kids.
Another weird scene is the one where Luke Evans' character is given a blood transfusion using dog's blood.
The Diapers - The Visit
There are definitely a bunch of weird moments in The Visit—the oven scene, Tyler being chased by Nana underneath the house, the many "rap" breaks—but perhaps the strangest of them all involves Pop Pop's diapers.
After finding Pop Pop's shed full of used adult diapers, viewers get an idea of what's to come in the shocking denouement. Pop Pop's usage of a soiled diaper to brutalize Tyler is uncomfortable to watch and sticks with viewers long after the movie ends.
The Catatonic Facial Expressions - Dark Skies
This moment in the alien movie Dark Skies is just downright weird to look at. Audiences feel a slight jump once they see a character wide-eyed and jaw-dropped. The first jolt of a scare is once the camera cuts to the catatonic facial expression. But the next reaction is wondering what on earth they're looking at.
The film aims to be different from the typical supernatural flick where the possessed characters (or under another mindless state) are emotionless, and can't control their bodies. However, this choice to have them look like the "The Scream" painting is somewhat comical and just ultimately weird.
"Kevin" (Hedwig) Flirting With Casey - Split
Although it makes sense once audiences watch the full movie, it's nevertheless a strange sight to see the main character, Kevin, get a little too comfortable with a child.
The character's multiple personalities include that of the nine year-old boy, Hedwig. Hedwig is revealed here and acts as if he's innocently getting cozy with Casey. The weirdness comes from Hedwig, clearly an adult man, getting far too physically close with a teenager. There is way more complexity to the film than this one moment, but it's still a strange sight for any viewer.
The Contorted Faces - Truth Or Dare
The entire concept of the facial contortion isn't super frightening to look at, but it is undoubtedly strange.
The wide-eyed, Joker-like (or even Grinch-like) smiles feel like they're making a dent in viewers as they now cower in discomfort from the back of their seat. Viewers eventually get used to seeing it happen throughout the film but it's still a creepy and weird sight, especially how quickly every character's face just falls into the smiley facial reformation.
Peachfuzz Dancing - Creep
For everyone that has watched this 2014 film, no explanation for this scene is necessary. For all new viewers, this scene with or without its backstory is flat out weird in every way. Some find it funny for its odd, playful randomness.
Josef puts on the "Peachfuzz" wolf mask and dances in front of the camera and Aaron, saying "I'd make a good friend" among other things. This mask has a way more sinister and disturbing background to it, which makes this scene all the more frightening when rewatching it. But all in all, it's hilariously weird when viewers initially watch it before they continue with the rest of the movie.
The Underground Classroom - Us
Although eerie, the scene in the underground classroom is one long, weird moment for viewers to sit through.
This scene is vital, however, to the film because it's when Red finally tells Adelaide who "the Tethered" are and what they want from her. The bone-chilling revelation is through Red's haunting hoarse voice while rabbits quietly hop around the area, adding an odd sense of innocence to this underground society. The classroom setting may be symbolic for Red to teach Adelaide everything, but it's still a weird scene to watch because of how creepy the setting is in this place.
Rose Drinking The Milk - Get Out
Out of everything in the disturbing movie Get Out, the strangest moment of all is when the boyfriend-killer Rose is calmly drinking a glass of milk while looking at her next batch of potential victims. Once audiences get to this scene, they now can see Rose for who she truly is.
The question isn't why she is drinking milk seeing as it symbolizes a racially-charged fixation with whiteness that Rose's family has. There really is no question to this scene at all. It's just plain weird to watch.
