The a Blue Beetle animated TV show is currently in development, which will "build on the movie", but "divert from telling the same story."

While Blue Beetle updates have been limited since the initial announcement, ScreenRant recently caught up with Xolo Maridueña at this year's Saturn Awards, where he was asked if there was any new information to share about the DCU project. As Maridueña is currently finishing promoting Cobra Kai season 6, the DC star teased that the creative team is "working really hard on it" while stressing that he expects more things to go forward after the release of Superman, stating the following:

No scripts. I can say that they're working really hard on it. The whole DC fam has been really welcoming to Blue Beetle and that character, so I'm really appreciative of that. We're getting hard at work on Cobra Kai, this last season of Cobra Kai, so I haven't had a chance to peep too much on what's going on over in the Blue Beetle world. But I can say that after Superman, I'm hoping that the floodgates open for the possibility of how big [that world could be]. They're busy at work, honestly, so I'm glad we're both getting to do our things right now, so I'll be ready for the call whenever it happens at DC.

What Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle Comments Mean For The DCU

While James Gunn and DC Studios have yet to comment on the DCU as Blue Beetle, it's unclear why the DC Studios co-CEO has yet to address Jaime's animated series. But given that Maridueña is sharing new updates about Blue Beetle, it definitely seems like his DCU series has been greenlit.

However, it also appears that the Blue Beetle series may be further along, as Maridueña revealed to The Direct that "We're hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year." If Blue Beetle ends up premiering in 2026, it would mark the fourth confirmed DCU project for DC Studios, alongside the Supergirl and Clayface movies, as well as the Lanterns TV show. That would also suggest that the Blue Beetle show is also closer to having its returning cast locked in, along with perhaps an animation studio attached.

Our Take On Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle Comments

Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes in Blue Beetle wearing the Blue Beetle suit..

With all of Maridueña's latest Blue Beetle teases, it will be exciting to see how the DCU works Jaime into the new franchise, both through and outside of his new TV show. Even if it may have struggled at the box office, the Blue Beetle film in 2023 made a great case for the character getting a proper shot in the DCU's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters". Hopefully, more news about the Blue Beetle TV show will emerge sooner rather than later, especially if the plan is to start production this year.
