In Bleach, the Quincy are the enemy of the Soul Reapers, due largely to bad blood that has been spilled over the millennia. They come back with a vengeance in Thousand-Year Blood War, however, and their powers are more than enough to give Soul Society a true challenge.
The Quincy are a group of humans with special abilities that allow them to manipulate reishi, or spirit particles, enabling them to form weapons and perform attacks using this energy. High-ranked Quincy are given an ability called a Schrift, which corresponds to a letter of the alphabet, and there are basically no limits to what a Schrift power can do, although it does vary from individual to individual. As such, the most powerful Quincy tend to be those with truly overpowered Schrift abilities, allowing them to perform feats that would be impossible for anyone else. Here are 10 of the strongest Quincy seen in Bleach.
Giselle Gewelle
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Last 9 Days"
Giselle Gewelle is a Quincy whose Schrift is Z: The Zombie. This allows Giselle to convert the dead around her into zombie minions that must follow her orders. Giselle is absolutely ruthless in employing this ability, even killing one of her own allies, Bambietta, in order to zombify her and take her power for herself. She even managed to defeat and zombify Rangiku and Hitsugaya, some of the more competent fighters in the Soul Society.
Aside from her Schrift, Giselle also possesses a Quincy Vollstandig, which gives her cartoon-like bone wings. She keeps a short bow on her as her primary weapon, allowing her to perform typical Quincy techniques, which she does with a high degree of skill. Giselle is also notably tough herself, taking hits from even Ichigo and brushing them off surprisingly easily.
Bazz-B
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "March of the Starcross"
Bazz-B is the Quincy assigned the Schrift H: The Heat. This allows Bazz-B to uses fire-based attacks, ranging from the moderately powerful Burner Finger 1 to the incredibly strong Burning Full Fingers, which allows him to launch pillars of flame from all of his fingers in a deadly cone. Bazz-B’s heat is powerful enough to melt Hitsugaya’s ice with relative ease, and he was even able to use the heat from his technique to shield himself and allies against Yamamoto’s Bankai.
Bazz-B spent a lot of time with Jugram Haschwalth as a child, which had the impact of enhancing his abilities greatly. Bazz-B also has a Vollstandig, which allows him to fly and move at high speeds, and even enhances the blasts from his Schrift even further. His main weapon is a crossbow, which he has been able to materialize since he was a child.
Askin Nakk Le Vaar
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "March of the Starcross"
Askin Nakk Le Vaar is a member of Yhwach’s Schutzstaffel, his strongest and most trusted warriors. Askin’s Schrift is D: The Deathdealing, and it allows him to adjust the fatal dose of any substance, even reishi, making him extremely dangerous to face. This primarily manifests in two ways: lowering the fatal dose for opponents, so that ordinary substances become deadly, and raising the fatal dose for himself, allowing him to become “immune” to a substance’s dangerous effects.
Askin is extraordinarily fast for a Quincy, able to use the Hirenkyaku technique to keep up with Yoruichi’s Flash Steps, and even dodged an attack from legendary swordsmith Oetsu Nimaiya. His ability to survive in extreme situations is what drew Yhwach’s attention, even before his Schrift. Askin also possesses a Vollstandig, which allows him to fly and creates a reishi staff he can fight with.
Gremmy Thoumeaux
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Last 9 Days"
Gremmy Thoumeaux is a Quincy wielding the Schrift V: The Visionary, which allows anything that he envisions in his imagination to become real. He turned Yachiru’s bones into cookies, for example, rendering her completely immobile. There’s no real limit to what Gremmy can bring to life with the Visionary, including living things, such as clones of himself or even wholly original people. Gremmy even created a massive meteor, which could’ve destroyed the entire Soul Society, and was only stopped by Kenpachi Zaraki’s firm belief he was able to die.
Gremmy’s Schrift is so powerful that he essentially never uses any other abilities, like Vollstandig or his bow. His only real weakness was the limits of his imagination, as envisioning his own death during a battle could accidentally make that a reality, as well. Misdirection is the best weapon against Gremmy as a result.
Pernida Parnkgjas
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Last 9 Days"
Pernida Parnkgjas is another member of the Schutzstaffel, and secretly the left hand of the Soul King, believing itself to be a Quincy. Pernida’s Schrift, C: The Compulsory, can send out nerve fibers that embed themselves in foes, allowing Pernida to control their movements, often shredding them to bits in the process. Pernida’s Schrift is wildly dangerous, as it can act almost instantaneously, and thus it makes it quite difficult to get close to Pernida.
Additionally, Pernida has divine governance over the concept of progress, allowing it to evolve its own body in response to threats, such as Mayuri’s Bankai. It can alter its biology or even create clones of itself with nearly as much power as the original. Pernida is capable of summoning five bows at once, and is able to infuse the arrows with its nerve fibers, making it a big risk at a distance as well.
Uryu Ishida
First Appearance: Bleach, "Greetings from a Stuffed Lion"
Uryu was long believed to be one of the last living Quincy, until the Wandenreich made their appearance. A friend of Ichigo's, Uryu ended up ing Yhwach, presumably in revenge against the Soul Reapers for wiping out his people. When he ed, he was chosen to be Yhwach's successor and given a Schrift, A: The Antithesis, which allows him to flip the circumstances of situations to his advantage. He can reject damage he's taken and swap it with a target, or even escape a trap using this ability.
Uryu is also well-trained in a wide variety of other abilities, such as the defensive Blut Vene technique, and the Ransotengai, which allows him to puppet his own body in the event of paralysis. Uryu also has a Vollstandig, which allows him to control dozens of arrows at once, and enhances the Antithesis further.
Lille Barro
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Last 9 Days"
Lille Barro is another Schutzstaffel, this time wielding the Schrift X: The X-Axis. Using his Schrift, Lille is able to pierce through anything to reach his target, making it impossible to dodge or block his attacks. By using this power on himself, Lille can turn himself intangible, making enemy attacks miss once both his eyes are open. Lille thinks of himself as a god, and he was certainly as hard to kill as one.
Lille’s spirit weapon is a sniper rifle, which fits well with his Schrift. It allows him to be deadly at massive distances, although he rarely makes use of this, preferring to face his opponents on even . With his Vollstandig active, Lille is permanently intangible and can fire as many as 24 shots at once, making him far more difficult to deal with than anyone could’ve expected. He also has a non-human form, which allowed him to come back from seemingly certain death.
Gerard Valkyrie
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Last 9 Days"
Gerard Valkyrie, another Schutzstaffel, is like Pernida in that he’s also a piece of the Soul King’s body—in this case, his heart. Gerard’s Schrift is M: The Miracle, which allows him to pull off unlikely feats almost guaranteed. The longer the Soul Reapers fought Gerard, the stronger he grew, as his defeat became more likely. Gerard was able to grow to massive size as well, and proved to be very nearly unkillable.
Gerard wields a special sword, Hoffnung, which is capable of redirecting attacks back at their attacker. He’s incredibly strong, even for his muscular body, and has an uncanny resilience, withstanding a piercing attack from Senjumaru Shutara without suffering a true injury. Gerard, of course, also has a Vollstandig, which allows him to fly and fire energy beams from his sword.
Jugram Haschwalth
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "Foundation Stones"
Jugram Haschwalth is Yhwach’s second-in-command. He wields the Schrift B: The Balance, which allows him to moderate misfortunes and fortunate events, taking from those who are lucky. While the details of his ability are a bit confusing, it’s a wildly powerful one. If misfortune happens to befall Haschwalth, he’s able to store it in his Freund Shield, which he can then redirect at a foe, meaning that things essentially always go his way in battle.
Haschwalth is an unusual Quincy, one who’s unable to create a bow from reishi, and thus doesn’t use one, nor a Vollstandig. Don’t let that fool you, however; Haschwalth’s skill with a sword is impressive, and he also gains the ability to use a limited form of Yhwach’s power, the Almighty, whenever Yhwach is sleeping.
Yhwach
First Appearance: Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, "The Blood Warfare"
Yhwach is the ruler of the Quincy, and the one who bestows Schrifts upon others. His Schrift is A: The Almighty, which allows him to see into and change the future so that it suits him. He is able to take back the power that he has given others, including how much they’ve grown that power, through the use of Auswahlen. After absorbing the Soul King, Yhwach gained further power, giving him almost infinite strength, the ability to command unending swarms of small black creatures, and the ability to create barriers.
Yhwach’s powers and abilities make him almost unbeatable. Anything that might pose a threat to him in the future, he can foresee and squash in the present. With the Soul King’s power, he’s strong enough to restructure the very nature of the world as he sees fit, and intended to erase reality and create a new one. With that kind of divine power at his control, there’s no doubt that Yhwach is Bleach’s strongest Quincy ever.
