During the Gamescom 2021 trailer for Metroidvania indie game is planned for 2023. Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide is a free DLC update to the original title that will wrap up its bleak story and introduce its final ending on December 9 for all available platforms, and its announcement trailer is luxuriously animated.

Developed by The Game Kitchen and released in 2019, Blasphemous quickly amassed a cult following due to its gritty art style, brutal animations, and masochistically unforgiving combat. It was precisely its methodical nature and dark themes that earned it so many comparisons to the Soulslike game for its difficulity. It's an analogy that Blasphemous lived up to well, managing to earn itself a special place among the many indie games that fall under the Metroidvania subgenre.

Two years later, a trailer shown during day two of Gamescom 2021 revealed Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide, the game's final free DLC chapter. As shared by IGN, the gorgeous animated cinematic teased the conclusion to Blasphemous’s story arc and its true ending. However, that was not all, as the developer had one more surprise up its sleeve. The trailer also revealed that a sequel to the game is currently in the works and is set to release sometime in 2023. In a statement, The Game Kitchen said, “We’re so excited to finally announce that we’ve started on a Blasphemous sequel, the community have shown so much love for the first game and we can’t wait to share more when we can!”

Initially a Kickstarter project, Blasphemous was well-received by critics and backers for its highly stylized pixel art, which heavily features motifs evoking the Spanish Inquisition and Christianity. The game’s new trailer, although in keeping with that tone, takes a more colorful approach. It is a beautiful, hand-drawn cinematic that sees the Penitent One (Blaspehmous's protagonist) travel to new lands and take on macabre creatures, all while utilizing their familiar repertoire of signature abilities - most of which involve self-flagellation. To better convey this feeling, the game has been known to reward the player for choosing more challenging pathways through areas, and Wounds of Eventide will likely be no different.

While 2023 is still a ways off, there's more than enough Blasphemous content to tide players over until more is revealed about the sequel. Prior to the Wounds of Eventide DLC, Blasphemous: The Stir of Dawn and Strife & Ruin were also released for free post-launch. These have increased the game’s replayability by adding New Game+, a Boss Rush mode, and additional encounters. Mastering Blasphemous and all of its challenges takes a great deal of patience for some, which might help make the wait for Blasphemous 2 feel a little shorter.
