It seems inevitable that Black Myth: Wukong will receive a DLC expansion, and the rumored release window would actually be the perfect time for the game to get more content. As a challenging action game that takes inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong has found a huge audience thanks to its impressive presentation and memorable boss fights. Although the experience isn't perfect, it excels in ways that stand out from competitors, and it's a common favorite among games released in 2024 so far.

DLC for Black Myth: Wukong should have no trouble attracting a similar amount of success, especially considering how much room there is to expand on the story and ideas behind the game. 2024's Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree already proved how much attention an expansion for a somewhat similar game can attract, earning high critical accolades that compete with the best new titles. Although DLC for Black Myth: Wukong would likely be somewhat smaller in scale, it could still be a substantial experience that shakes up concepts from the core game for some fresh innovation.

An Expansion Could Be Coming Fairly Soon

According to a tweet from gaming consultant Daniel Camilo, as reported by Game Rant, "very reliable first hand sources" indicate that Black Myth: Wukong DLC should release in the vicinity of the Chinese New Year in 2025. Chinese New Year is celebrated in accordance with the second new moon after the winter solstice, which will fall on January 29 this year. The tweet should ultimately be taken with a grain of salt, but it does seem like a reasonable rumor rather than any kind of fundamentally unlikely proposition.

This wouldn't be too long of a wait for Black Myth: Wukong DLC, especially when compared to the years that ed between the release of Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree. It's still enough time to let fans build up some excitement, however, eliminating the possibility of wearing out too many players attempting to dive back in shortly after completing the game's trials.

Other Action RPGs Shouldn't Be A Huge Threat

The game release schedule for 2025 is still very nebulous, with many titles confirmed to launch next year still lacking specific dates or even seasonal windows. A couple of RPGs will release in a competitive window with the rumored date for Black Myth: Wukong's DLC, however. Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 from Warhorse Studios are the biggest threats, with both games building on the legacies of previous hits.

Compared to the early 2024 action RPG rush, however, the competition in that window seems completely manageable. While last year's titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, and Dragon's Dogma 2 leaned into stylish action, the first-person combat of Avowed and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 won't scratch a very similar itch to Black Myth: Wukong DLC. Other titles in January and February slots, like Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Civilization 7, aren't targeting the same brand of appeal in any meaningful way.

It's also neat to potentially tie the release of Black Myth: Wukong DLC in with a major Chinese holiday, as the game is a celebration of an important piece of the nation's storytelling and culture. With a large part of the game's audience living in China or being part of the Chinese diaspora, this choice isn't terribly dissimilar from choosing to promote the release of a Western game in the Christmas holiday season, despite some differences in how the holidays are commercialized.

At any rate, it would be nice to kick off 2024 with Black Myth: Wukong DLC shortly into the year, especially if it ended up touching on any of the interesting ideas that were cut during the game's development. There are plenty of gaps to fill in the Destined One's story, whether it puts players back into his experience or ends up following a different character altogether. Black Myth: Wukong DLC should be a likely prospect in any scenario, and an early 2025 release to coincide with Chinese New Year would be the perfect way to go.
