The developer of God of War. The most recent God of War, released back in 2018, was a stylistic change from the series' beat 'em up roots. One significant change was that the entire game had no camera cuts, giving it the appearance of being one continuous shot. It was a feature that had a huge effect on the storytelling of the game and left players feeling like a fly on the wall throughout the epic campaign.
Black Myth: Wukong's Dark Souls-style combat and its engaging depiction of Chinese mythology. The game's story is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, following the main character Sun Wukong, or The Monkey King, on his legendary adventure. The game's developer, Game Science Studio, has only been lead developer on one other game, called Art of War: Red Tides, a real time strategy game inspired by Starcraft 2.
According to translations of an interview posted by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the idea for a single shot camera was taken directly from God of War, which is one of Black Myth: Wukong's inspirations. The gameplay seen in the trailer is actually playable, but is nowhere close to being done. Even though it already looks good, there is still more work planned on many of the animations, environments, and combat features shown in the trailer. Game Science Studio also has a lot of ambition for the game, with plans for this to be the first in a series. The studios wants to add in executions, harder difficulties, and giant monster fights before Black Myth: Wukong is ready for release.
Game Science Studio is not a large developer, with only 30 people currently working on the game, but it's looking to grow even more during development. If all goes according to plan, the studio says Black Myth: Wukong aims to be China's first AAA gaming title. This is the second time that Game Science Studio has worked on a game based on Journey to the West, but the first time as the main developer.
Black Myth: Wukong looks similar to God of War in more than one aspect, and it's easy to see the inspiration in the gameplay trailer. The combat has a similar feeling, even if it is a little closer to Dark Souls than God of War. Its story of a hero fighting through their own mythology is also very similar to God of War, and obviously the camera choice is the same. One of the biggest differences is that God of War had over 300 people working on it for years before it was released. Sony had a team 10 times the size of Game Science Studio, and they had it from the beginning. It will be interesting to see how a much smaller team tackles the same visual storytelling issues, or how quickly Game Science Studio grows to catch up. Either way, this first bit of gameplay shows that great things can be expected.
