Experimental 101 and THQ Nordic’s tweak Biomutant's narration in an patch. These tweaks may end up getting some players more interested in the story again.

Biomutant’s story is split into three stories - the Toxanol corporation, the tribal war, and the end of the world. As players finish creating their favored Biomutant class and begin to venture out into the world, they’ll meet an old friend called Out-Of-Date. He will explain to the player what has happened within Biomutant’s world since the protagonist left the lands so long ago. It’s here that he will tell the player the fate of the world depends on their choices. To save the world, or end it, is entirely up to the player’s will.

In the history of Biomutant’s world, corporate greed laid waste to what was once Earth. After years of dumping toxic chemicals in the ocean and landfills hoping for it to deteriorate one day, the Toxanol corporation, in its ignorance, caused the planet’s animals to mutate. The world began to die out and become uninhabitable by humans as radioactive pockets, heatwaves, toxic chemical zones, and cold shocks swept across the planet. Humans, always thinking for themselves, fled the planet in spaceships called “Arks,” never to be seen again. In their wake, the biodiversity and planet flourished, creating more intelligent animals who evolved to exist in the current climate of the planet. However, with intelligence growing within, so too does diversity begin to set in among how the animals of the planet should live, and who should be in charge.

Biomutant: The Tribal War

Biomutant Sifu Tribe War

Biomutant has six tribes in total that the main character can choose to over the course of the game. Each tribe leader, or Sifu, has their own view of the world and how it should be run. These Sifu were all once disciples of the main character’s mother, the leader who once unified all under one banner. It’s under the rule of the mother that the disciples, and the young protagonist, train in the ways of Wung-Fu. However, when the mother’s past comes back to haunt her, it results in the complete destruction of the allied nations.

In the past, the mother was fueled by rage. She thought that only certain tribes of animals could co-exist, so she sought out to end the line of the carnivorous Lupa-Lupins. She finds what was thought to be the last in existence, and she puts an arrow through the Lupa-Lupin’s heart. Her mistake was thinking there was only one left, and as the mother Lupin falls, a Lupa-Lupin cub is seen standing behind the body of his deceased mother, scared and afraid.

Unable to finish off the cub, the player's mother leaves it to fend for itself. In the end, her rage only fueled the cycle of revenge, and the Lupa-Lupin cub grows to exact his revenge upon the village. In the attack, the protagonist’s mother and father are taken from him, forcing him into the cycle of violence too.

As the village lays in shambles, the disciples of the mother split and create their own villages. Some follow the path of light, looking for a way to stop the World Eaters who have emerged and gnaw at the roots of the Tree of Life. Others follow the path of darkness, seeking to use the World Eaters to speed up the world’s destruction, and allow for nature to take its course within the evolutionary process. The tribal war is a result of this clash of ideals that forces the player to choose which side they want to . To unify or subdue each other tribe is completely up to the player. As a bonus, players will receive each tribe's weapon upon their defeat. Unlike the abundance of craftable weapons within Biomutant, these weapons cannot be altered in any way.

Biomutant: The End of The World

Biomutant World Eaters

There is another task Out-Of-Date gives the player that he feels should take priority over the war: handling the four World Eaters, ferocious beasts able to turn buildings to rubble with ease, send forth power waves of slicing water, and spit toxic waste. However, Out-Of-Date and friends have resorted to calling them childish names like Murk Puff, Porky Puff, Hoof Puff, and Jumbo Puff to make these thrashing giants seem less scary during confrontations.

As players take their main character through Biomutant's world, they’ll bump into old friends who have all been working on different types of vehicles that can take out the beasts. Once players feel they’re ready to face off against the World Eaters, the views of the player’s chosen tribe determine whether the player will kill the World Eaters and save the Tree of Life or tame them and allow the World Eaters to move forward along the roots of the tree.

Partway through Biomutant's lengthy story, once players have faced off against two of the World Eaters, the protagonist will earn the chance to discover the Lupa-Lupin’s lair. Here they will be able to defeat the beast that took away the main character’s village and parents. Once defeated he’ll be wrapped up in vines, awaiting to be battled once more after the rest of the World Eaters and tribe war have been dealt with.

Biomutant's Endings Explained

Biomutant Ark Escape

At the end of the game, after the fate of the World Eaters has been set in motion and the remaining tribes have either been unified or subdued, players will fight a mutated form of the Lupa-Lupin alongside their tribal leader in a final battle to save the or end the world depending on the state of the Biomutant player's aura.

The Good Biomutant Ending: The light ending results in the player forgiving the Lupa-Lupin and ending the cycle of violence by letting the Lupa-Lupin live. The player must then take Out-Of-Date, the Sifu, and four chosen comrades onto the last remaining Ark.

The Bad Biomutant Ending: The dark ending has the player finish off the Lupa-Lupin once and for all. Afterward, the world begins to crumble as the World Eaters destroy the tree. Player’s then lead Out-Of-Date and their tribes Sifu with them to the Ark. Dark aura players don't get to choose comrades to their next journey.

While the world may live or end depending on the player’s choices, both options result in the main character leaving the planet behind to traverse the stars. While there’s no word on a Biomutant sequel just yet, this open ending suggests that there are more worlds to explore with the furry little protagonist besides the breathtaking landscapes of Biomutant. New worlds with unseen biomes, flourishing life, and unique new species await those that boarded the Ark.
