Perry (Alexander Skarsgard).

Meryl Streep ed the cast in the second season as Perry's mother, Mary Louise, who wants to get to the bottom of how her son died. While the women are trying to move on from the accidentally on purpose death, Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) thinks about turning herself in to the police.

Off-screen, the stars aligned literally to make this show happen, and on-screen the stars and planets guided the characters' actions.

Renata Klein: Aries

Laura in red top hair in face

Renata, as portrayed by Laura Dern, is every bit The Warrior that this sign is known to be. On the positive side, she is independent and courageous, on the negative she could come off as overbearing and inflammatory.

When we first met this swaggering, wealthy working mom she was on a mission to prove that Jane's son Ziggy (new to the 2nd-grade class) was the culprit who choked her daughter Amabella, first by taking things up with the principal then having him ostracized from birthday parties. It's clear she's a force to be reckoned with when she declares war on her husband Gordon after finding out he slept with the nanny.

Nathan Carlson: Taurus

Nathan (James Tupper) was married to Madeline (now married to Ed) and is currently re-married to Bonnie. He's laid back, resourceful, a bit too possessive and can be obstinate.

He and Madeline did not consciously uncouple and struggle to co-parent their daughter Abigail. He holds on to his truth that he is a better dad than Madeline is a mom and a better dad then Ed. He rubs in his ex's face that Bonnie is a more calming influence on their child. Which always goes over big.

Perry Wright: Gemini

The sign represented by twins fits Perry to a T as one moment he is a handsome, loving husband and father who is sexy as all get out and the next he's a brutal, abusive, rapist monster.

Hardworking? Yes. Smooth-talking, inconsistent, and insincere? Yes, yes, and absolutely. In fact, in a "What are the odds?" turn of events, he once raped Jane when they met a bar when he was away on business and the savagely violent encounter resulted in Jane becoming pregnant with Ziggy. Gee, why would anyone want him dead?

Celeste Wright: Cancer

Nicole as Celeste in white turtleneck in front of mic

Nicole Kidman is perfect as the beautiful Celeste who is intuitive, romantic, a loving wife and mother, a bit melancholy, and extremely defensive.

The soft-spoken redhead is as flawless as her life appears and because she's in love with love, she remains loyal to her abusive husband but is sorry, not sorry when Perry falls off the terrace/cliff.  She comes out of her crab shell in Season 2 when her mother-in-law tries to take her kids away from her; she pulls out all the stops in court.

Madeline Martha Mackenzie: Leo

Reese in red coat outdoors

Oh, that Madeline. She's warm and friendly when she wants something; domineering, self-obsessed, ive/aggressive, and manipulative when she wants something and others don't want to give it to her.

This Leo is indeed the leader of the mommy pack (on- and off-screen) and not one you want to make an enemy of. To get back at Renata she plans a skating party on the same days as Amabella's birthday party meaning many of the invitees will not be showing up because they're afraid to cross Madeline. She cheats on her husband. And takes on Mary Louise on behalf of Celeste.

Ziggy Chapman: Virgo

little boy in red sweater leaning on adult

Adorable but troubled Ziggy (Iain Armitage) is introspective, wise beyond his years, and ever-questioning, yet at the same time can be a handful. For most of Season 1, this quiet boy is falsely accused of bullying Amabella and doesn't do much to defend himself.

He's very close to his mom Jane and seems content as the only child of his single mother, yet won't let up on finding out the identity of his father, which Jane herself is in search of. She can't give him answers she doesn't have, but Ziggy wants to know.

Ed Mackenzie: Libra

Adam in Brown jacket outdoors

Likable and eager to please in a doormat kind of way, as well as indecisive, Ed (Adam Scott) is the opposites attract version of his wife. This low-key, peacekeeper is always trying to smooth over the chaos swirling around Madeline.

It takes a lot to push back which he eventually does against both Nathan who likes to push Ed around for sport, and Madeline, after he finds out she cheated. All this guy wants is to balance the proverbial scales--the symbol of his sign--where his marriage and family are concerned.

Josh & Max Wright: Scorpio

Twin boys talk to Nicole Kidman

Double-trouble is the only realistic descriptor for when these twins get aggressive--just like dear old dad whose "do as I say not as I do" onishments don't hold much water when Celeste is alone with the boys, which is often because Perry travels for business.  Josh and Max (Cameron and Nicholas Crovettie) are not what one would call "good listeners."

Rambunctious and mischievous, the sting of the Scorpion is evident when one of Season 1's big little lies is that it was Max who was hurting Amabella all along and Josh who covered for him.

Chloe Mackenzie: Sagittarius Little girl in back of car with iPod

Chloe (Darby Camp) is bubbly and tell-it-like-it-is just like her mama. The only child of Madeline and Ed is optimistic like her dad but doesn't fall from her mother's tree when it comes to being rash, insensitive, chatty, and friendly in a rather overbearing way.

Her lust for life is displayed by her advanced taste in and knowledge of music which rivals that of John Cusack's character in High Fidelity. We can only hope that as she matures, Chloe retains Ed's kindness and develops only the positive version of Madeline's outgoing quality.

Mary Louise Wright: Capricorn

For Capricorns, family and stability are job 1, hence when Mary Louise loses her son Perry who she believed walked on water, this sign of the curmudgeon had every intention of getting to the bottom of what happened to him.

Known as The Achiever, from the beginning of Season 2 it's obvious Mary Louise's motto is my way or the highway and she will stop at nothing to get what she wants/needs. She is suspicious of Celeste, as well as the rest of the Monteray 5 and what they know about Perry's death.
