CBS's reality competition show twists that shake up the game each season. Though each season has a slightly different format, there are some things that remain constant. One of the elements always present are punishments for the houseguests.
These punishments come in many different forms, but they often exist to entertain the fans. While some of these punishments are very successful, keeping fans entertained and laughing, several others are lame and don't add much to the game.
Dull: Patriotard
One form of punishment that is common on Big Brother is a ridiculous costume or unitard that the houseguests are required to wear for a certain amount of time. On BB18, Corey was punished by being forced to wear a patriotard for a week following the Zingbot for President POV competition.
This costume was American flag-themed and featured a bald eagle puppet. Though the costume was a bit ridiculous, Corey didn't exactly look out of his element and the costume didn't add much to the show.
Best: Robot Online
In a bizarre twist during BB20, houseguest Sam was forced to live part of her week as a robot. This required Sam to isolate herself and control a robot. She could speak to others through the robot but had minimal reactions with the others in person.
This punishment was particularly difficult during the first week as players are working hard to form relationships with others. Still, it was interesting because it had both positive and negative aspects to it and was a unique and different punishment from others seen before.
Dull: Hamazon
A twist during BB20 introduced the app store, in which contestants received rewards or punishments based on how much they were trending. When Fessy was the least trending houseguest, he received a crap app called "Hamazon."
This meant that Fessy would randomly get packaged deliveries of vegan ham (as he is Muslim) and would immediately have to consume all of the contents of the package. There is really nothing entertaining about watching a man eat the same food over and over.
Best: Wackstreet Boys
Some of the most hilarious punishments require houseguests to repeat a certain action every time they hear a specific sound. On Big Brother 17, Jason, Johnny Mac, and Liz/Julia received a hilarious punishment in which they formed the group "The Wackstreet Boys."
They learned a small song and dance and were randomly forced to put on performances. This was enjoyable for both the feedsters as well as the casual fans as the clips were edited together to form a hilarious segment.
Dull: 8 pm Curfew
During the competition "Big Brother Election," on BB15, houseguests had to dig through the mud to find ballots that had a different number of points on them. These points were accompanied by a punishment that the houseguests were forced to complete. While this competition was amusing, the following punishments were varied. Helen received a punishment that gave her an 8 pm curfew. But there is nothing interesting about a woman being forced to go to bed early.
Best: Shackles
Shackles is a reoccurring punishment in Big Brother in which houseguests are forced to remain connected for a specified amount of time. This always leads to hilarious moments as the houseguests struggle to talk game, complete their daily routines, and not get annoyed by the person they are linked with.
Two of the most hilarious and well-ed shackles punishments were when Victoria and Caleb were tied together for 48 hours and when Britney and Brendon were handcuffed together.
Dull: Penalty Kick
In BB16, Cody received a punishment called penalty kick. This forced him to pull a lever which caused a show to kick him in the butt. For 24 hours, any time a whistle would blow, Cody had to pull the lever 10 times.
Though the houseguests got a lot of enjoyment over watching this and making jokes, many fans disliked having to watch this as they aren't a fan of pain-inducing punishments.
Best: Fitness Advice
Though Jessie appeared as a houseguest on 2 seasons of Big Brother, he is far more ed for his personality than anything else. Jessie is extremely obnoxious and obsessed with his body and fitness. Using Jessie's over the top personality became a running gag over the years.
When Britney opened Pandora's Box on BB11, she hoped to get a reward. Instead, she received a punishment. While the rest of the house enjoyed a Hawaiian luau, Britney was forced to listen to fitness advice for an hour. This segment was hilarious as Britney fired off hilarious one-liners and reacted to Jessie's arrogance.
Dull: Shaved Head
As part of a week 7 veto competition, houseguests were forced to accept a number of punishments to try and win the veto. Though several of the punishments resulting from this competition were hilarious, other ones were pretty lame.
Though Brendon was subjected to several entertaining punishments, one of his punishments involved shaving his head. Brendon already kept his hair short so shaving it really didn't make much of a difference. This punishment seemed especially dull when considering the others he was forced to complete at the same time.
Best: Soccer Shootout
During Big Brother 16, Brittany received a punishment that tasked her with kicking 2400 soccer goals in just 24 hours. She was not able to go inside until she completed the mission and failing it would result in her having to sit out the next veto competition.
Remarkably, Brittany was able to complete this grueling task. Fans enjoyed this punishment so much that a similar punishment was brought back for the following season of Big Brother.
