Summary

  • Baldur's Gate 3 may not get DLC, but characters like Astarion and Shadowheart could return in future projects.
  • Hasbro is considering Baldur's Gate 4 and there's potential for the return of characters from the third game.
  • While there won't be major expansions, the game will receive a few more quality-of-life updates.

While 3 may have come to an end, that doesn't mean its cast of characters can't go on any further adventures. Following the announcement that Larian Studios won't be developing any DLC for its critically-revered RPG, the community was understandably disappointed that they wouldn't be able to spend any more time with the likes of Astarion and Shadowheart. Fortunately, due to the game being an official part of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, there will seemingly be more opportunities for the characters to return either in a sequel or a different medium entirely.

Speaking to PC Gamer, Hasbro's Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing Eugene Evans confirmed that the company is still entertaining ideas about eventually producing Baldur's Gate 4, noting that some of the third game's cast could definitely make a return. Evans goes on to confirm that while he can't speak to any specific plans, he would like to believe that all the characters that were introduced in Larian's game "could potentially appear in future products." Whether that be in a video or through some of Dungeons & Dragons tabletop adventure books remains to be seen.

While Hasbro has confirmed that it's actively talking to development studios about what Baldur's Gate 4 could look like, it remains to be seen how it deals with the likes of Wyll, Gale, Astarion, like Minsc and Jaheira, were more than mere fan service and played crucial roles in the narrative.

The cast of Baldur's Gate 3 may be what stood out most in Larian Studios' take on the Forgotten Realms. While the game received plenty of praise for its open-ended quest design and flexible problem-solving solutions, the writing and acting are considered by many to have set a new industry standard. Dedicated voice actors like the award-winning Neil Newbon and fan-favorite Jennifer English have left a mark on the community who desperately hope that they'll return to their characters in the future.

While Baldur's Gate 3 may have finally wrapped up, the game's still set to receive a handful of additional post-launch updates. Larian Studios has confirmed that these will likely be minor additions to the existing experience and will take the form of quality-of-life improvements rather than substantial content drops. Despite disappointing some parts of the player base, the game is already so massive that an expansion would have been too good to be true.
