Baldur's Gate 3 has a vast amount of class diversity and challenges, so when it comes to choosing what to go to, there are very few bad choices. That being said, each class in Baldur's Gate 3 has very specific advantages, and some classes make certain aspects of gameplay incredibly easier than others. This is especially important when taking on honour mode, which restricts you to a single save and causes permanent deaths. This means that the slightest mistake can waste hours of gameplay, making each decision much more significant than a normal play-through.

The challenge of taking on BG3's honour mode can be fun or a struggle, but it all depends on how you want to take on the challenge. While there are many ways you can approach the challenge, the most essential fact is that you have fun, whether that be doing unique builds or playing to get a clean run through the content.

10 Life Domain Cleric

Best Healing and Good Utility

When it comes to keeping teams simply alive in Baldur's Gate 3, no class is better than the Life Domain Cleric. They specialize in consistently healing their allies and themselves while providing fairly good buffs and utility for their team. While not the most fun class in Baldur's Gate 3, it can almost guarantee a clear run of Honour mode, as it makes it almost impossible for allies to die.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Every Cleric Subclass (Domain), Ranked Worst to Best

Baldur's Gate 3 has seven cleric subclasses, with each offering a different take on the traditional healer role in RPGs for players to choose from.

While Life Domain Cleric isn't normally multi-classed often, it is quite possible to still pull off some interesting builds. An example of this is that using 1 or 2 levels of Wizard in the build allows the ability to use any scrolls permanently. Though this can weaken the class's late-game healing potential, it dramatically opens the options for utility spells that can make a more proactive difference in fights.

9 College of Lore Bard

Powerful Speech And Utility

College of Lore Bard is a fascinating class as its main purpose is mostly utility compared to the damage or healing roles of most other classes in Baldur's Gate 3. Their main ability is Cutting Words, which reduces targeted enemy attack rolls, saving throws, or ability checks by -1d6. They also gain a very beneficial ive at levels 6 and 10, known as Magical Secrets, which allows them to take two non-bard abilities, making them extremely versatile spell-wise.

The best use of Magical Secrets is to take abilities that can round out team compositions or be used in key moments. For example, if the team lacks a counterspell or needs AOE damage, taking the fireball spell would be quite beneficial.

College of Lore is one of the few subclasses in the game that doesn't benefit much from multi-classing; thus, it's not necessarily recommended. That being said, going a 10 Lore Bard/ 2 Warlock allows you to have an offensive tool in Eldritch Blast . This poses the negative of missing 6th level Spell Slots, which can hinder Lore Bards capabilities, so choose what works well for each team composition.

8 Evocation Wizard

High Damage Without Worrying About Teammates

Evocation Wizard is an excellent beginner class that provides significant damage and the natural versatility of the Wizard. Its innate ability, known as “sculpt spells,” makes it so that allies don't take damage from the Wizard's spells and will automatically succeed in saving throws from them. This allows for the Evocation Wizard to always be a relatively safe choice and makes for a consistent damage dealer who doesn't need to reposition much.

10 Best Feats For Wizards In Baldur's Gate 3

Wizards are fantastically powerful spellcasters in Baldur's Gate 3, and whether playing as Gale or Tav, these feats will help them be even better.

While there are some options for multi-classing when it comes to Wizard, it's typically best to always stay purely as the main class, as Wizard is the only int-based spell caster in Baldur's Gate 3. While this can seem limiting, Wizard is a naturally versatile class due to their ability to learn any scroll spell permanently, so it's typically not an issue when it comes to their kit.

7 Divination Wizard

Reactions That Change RNG In Your Favor

Unlike other classes on this list, Divination doesn't directly power the Wizard itself but rather gives it the ability to control the flow of combat by using reactions. Upon becoming a Divination Wizard, you gain the ability known as Portent, which provides a die with between 1 and 20 that can be used to change saving throws or attack rolls to one of the received dice numbers. At level 6, you gain an additional dice and gain prophecies each short rest, which, upon completion, replenish one of the portent dice.

Divination Wizard is best played with a Bard in the party, as Bards give an additional short rest through their spell “The Song of Rest.” This essentially means you will get an extra portent per long rest if you complete your prophecies, which is very useful in the long term.

Like other Wizards, Divination Wizard benefits significantly from simply sticking to their class to level 12. However, there's also the option of going 6 Divination Wizard/ 6 Lore Bard, which allows you to become a menace who can control almost every battle aspect at the cost of severely losing damage.

6 Battle Master Fighter

Powerful Melee With Equally Strong Range Options

Battle Master is possibly one of the most versatile melee classes in of building, as they have many range and melee options. They gain different abilities known as maneuvers as they level, which can interact within the fight in various ways. This includes disarming enemies, distracting/goading them, fearing enemies, and more, allowing the Battle Master to gain complete control of the battlefield.

Battle Master gains a lot as they level and heavily depend on heavy damage feats for fighters, such as Great Weapon Master for melee builds and Sharpshooter for ranged builds. That being said, going 1 level into War Cleric as a Battle Master allows you to get rid of the negatives of the Feat by casting Bless, as well as adding another attack by using war priest charges.

5 Draconic Sorcerer

Powerful Spell Caster With Naturally Strong Defenses.

Draconic Sorcerers are incredibly reliable casters who can take more hits and deal additional damage for specific elemental skills. When creating a Draconic Sorcerer, you can choose an ancestor that corresponds with the different elemental damage types. This not only provides an additional skill, but at level 6, you gain additional damage based on the charisma modifier towards the element and resistance to said element.

Sorcerer has the option to stick to Sorcerer fully, but a few builds are greatly enhanced by multi-classing compared to Wizard. By using a lightning-focused dragon and going 6 Draconic Sorcerer / 6 Tempest Cleric, you can greatly enhance the ability known as Chain Lightning and other lightning-based abilities. This build is incredibly strong, especially when paired with the Wet status condition.

4 Open Hand Monk

The Best Tavern Brawler

Open Hand Monk can seem kind of underwhelming at first when playing Baldur's Gate 3, but with proper build knowledge, they can become a threat in almost every situation. Compared to other classes previously listed, multi-classing truly unlocks the strength of this class by using 9 OH Monk/ 3 Thief, which provides extra attacks and mobility.

The Best Monk Multiclass Build In Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Monk players can massively increase their damage output by multiclassing into Rogue and Fighter, creating a powerful hybrid build.

The Feat known as Tavern Brawler is essential when it comes to building a Monk that can deal tons of damage in quick succession. Monk also tends not to share gear with most other builds, making them a great character to add to almost any team composition in Baldur's Gate 3. Players that run Astarion will find great success running him in this build, especially if they decide to ascend him.

3 College of Swords Bard

Ranged Damage Expert

The College of Swords Bard uses the unique utility of the Bard combined with the great damage potential of other classes to make a truly dangerous combo. By using their Blade flourish at level 3, they can control and deal tons of damage on the battlefield, especially with their slashing flourish, which can hit two enemies at once.

The Sword Bard is best when multi-classed, as they gain most of their benefits at level 6 when they gain an extra attack.

By using three levels (or four if you wish) in Thief and two levels in Fighter, you can get up to four successive shots in a row, which can be flourished onto two enemies each. Adding the sharpshooter feat to this combination also dramatically enhances the damage, as the bard has methods of avoiding the negatives.

2 Light Domain Cleric

Significant Damage With Useful Utility And Buffs

The Light Domain Cleric is a power caster that has reliable utility tools as they level. They gain a ton of incredible fire and light-based skills as they level, as well as many additional utility options, including their unique one, Warding Bond. Warding Bond allows you to cause attacks used against yourself (or your allies at level 6) to be at a disadvantage, which is very useful for avoiding damage.

Like other classes on this list, Light Cleric is best played when the player focuses on getting to the maximum level rather than multi-classing. Light Cleric gains potent spells, which can devastate a battlefield when used correctly, so it's best to simply stick to the path.

1 Oath of Vengeance Paladin

One Button To Rule Them All

The Oath of Vengeance Paladin has an incredibly diverse kit, which allows you to control, maneuver, and deal absurd amounts of damage without much care. This Paladin in BG3 naturally gets access to skills like Hold Person, Misty Step, Haste, and more while also being able to frighten enemies and boost allies' damage.

While Paladin is usually a class many would want to multi-class into, if you choose to go for a more dedicated Paladin build, there's typically no reason to multi-class. The Oath of Vengeance Paladin specifically gains many benefits from reaching the maximum level. However, if you happen to lose your Oath and become the Oathbreaker, there are some interesting builds that are unlocked, such as the Lockadin, which requires 7 Oath/ 5 Warlock for Pact of the Blade in Baldur's Gate 3.
