  • Dickinson and The Crown take different approaches, using history as a backdrop for social commentary and exploring the drama and intrigue of the British royal family.

Shows like novels by Julia Quinn. Deftly blending its humor with its charming romance, Bridgerton completely turned the period drama on its ear.

Garnering a heap of praise almost as soon as it debuted on Netflix, Bridgerton was a hit with critics and even won Creative Arts Emmy Awards for its spectacular design. Aside from its plotting and characters, one of the biggest appeals of Bridgerton is its diversity, and the series shattered the norms of what stuffy period pieces have always been. Despite that forward-thinking approach, Bridgerton's best dresses and other costumes still deliver the expected eye candy of period costume drama, and shows like Bridgerton rarely skimp on the fine details.

15 Dangerous Liaisons (2022)

  • Dangerous Liaisons is available to buy or rent on Apple TV and Amazon Prime

Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel of the same name, the short-lived romance series Dangerous Liaisons put a somewhat anachronistic spin on the classic tale of seduction and deceit. Ex-lovers Pascal (Nicholas Denton) and Camille (Alice Englert) use their wealth and privilege to seduce their way through the aristocracy of 18th century . Though most shows like Bridgerton use extravagant costuming to tell their tale, Dangerous Liaisons goes above and beyond to bring and exaggerated version of the period to life. The show was unceremoniously canceled after one season, robbing viewers of a chance for more steamy scandal.

14 The Tudors (2007-2010)

  • The Tudors is available to stream on Prime Video, Fubo TV, Paramount Plus, and Showtime

The life and reign of King Henry VIII have long been a fascinating subject for history buffs, but The Tudors made his complicated life a steamy historical romance. Spanning the adult life of Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the series chronicles his tumultuous affairs and bloody marriages through the eyes of the women in his life. With its sexuality and fun twists on real-life history, The Tudors laid the groundwork for shows like Bridgerton to eventually soar. The cast of The Tudors was stuffed with future stars including a young Henry Cavill as Charles Brandon, and the production design skillfully accentuated the style of the period.

13 The Spanish Princess (2019-2020)

  • The Spanish Princess is available to stream on Starz, Prime Video, and The Roku Channel

Continuing the story of the previous miniseries The White Queen, the Starz exclusive show The Spanish Princess explored the fascinating life of Catherine of Aragon. Set during the Tudor era, the series follows Catherine (Charlotte Hope) as she pursues the heirs to the throne of England. Besides offering a female perspective on the elusive historical figure, The Spanish Princess also took time to show the real living conditions of people of color during that era. Though the series was more grounded than other shows like Bridgerton, it delivered plenty of royal drama and had a unique, eye-catching.

12 Reign (2013-2017)

Mary Queen of Scots with her ladies in waiting in the CW show Reign.
  • Reign is available to stream on Prime Video and The CW

The CW had found great success with other long-running dramas, and Reign allowed the network to get in on the popularity of the historical costume epic. The series follows the life of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) as she ascends to the throne and navigates the complicated political landscape of the 16th century. Shows like Reign are often hamstrung by the strictures of network TV, but the series nevertheless delivered a lot of steamy historical romance. While somewhat darker in tone than Bridgerton, Reign satisfied history buffs by capturing the essence of Mary's tenure and did so with stylized visuals.

11 The Gilded Age (2022)

Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook in The Gilded Age
  • The Gilded Age is available to stream on Max

Leaving the royal courts of England behind, The Gilded Age told a distinctly American story with all the grandeur of shows like Bridgerton. In the Gilded Age of American history, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) becomes embroiled in a social war between her family and a wealthy tycoon. Like Bridgerton, The Gilded Age holds a mirror to its era by accentuating the high drama of social mores and the show finds a bit of common ground with the modern day as well. The HBO series delivered a star-studded cast, and pulled out all the stops in presenting a stunning recreation of the era that inspired the show's title.

10 The Borgias (2011-2013)

A still from The Borgias showing the major characters of the show.
  • The Borgias is available to stream on Showtime, Paramount+, and Fubo TV

Though most historical costume dramas center on the complex British royal family, The Borgias weaved a story of another immensely powerful historical empire. In Renaissance Era Italy, the Borgia family from Spain attempts to assert their political dominance through any means necessary. With resplendent costumes and gripping plots of political intrigue, The Borgias presented the tangled web of history with a bit of exaggeration to spice things up. Often considered one of the best historical shows, The Borgias also included plenty of steamy romance scenes just like those seen in Bridgerton.

9 Poldark (2015-2019)

Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson in Poldark
  • Poldark is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and PBS

Setting itself apart from most shows like Bridgerton, Poldark mixes in plenty of action and drama to go along with its romance. Fresh home from fighting in the American Revolutionary War, Redcoat Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) finds his life turned upside down upon discovering his beloved intends to marry another. Poldark himself is such a compelling character that his exploits are fascinating even beyond their steaminess. Nevertheless, the show’s excellent costume design brings the period to life with a touch of anachronistic flare, and its five-season run has plenty of extraneous entertainment value.

8 Dickinson (2019-2021)

Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Dickinson standing outside in Dickinson
  • Dickinson is available to stream on Apple TV+

Even if most shows like Bridgerton exaggerate the history a bit, Dickinson merely used its true story as a backdrop for clever social commentary. In the 19th century, famed writer Emily Dickinson (Hailee Steinfeld) explores the repressive society that inspired most of her greatest work. Stylized and over-the-top, Dickinson recontextualized the beloved writer for the 21st century by drawing parallels between her time and the modern day. Whether it was introducing Death (Wiz Khalifa) as a character, or showing the historical impact that Dickinson's writing had on future authors, the series didn't allow itself to be constrained by any genre, much in the same way that Bridgerton bucked conventions.

7 Gentleman Jack (2019-2022)

Suranne Jones looks on in Gentleman Jack
  • Gentleman Jack is available to stream on Max

Loosely based on the real-life story of its main character, Gentleman Jack proves that people were bucking gender norms even back in the 19th century. The series concerns Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) a widow who asserts herself as a businesswoman and intentionally defies societal norms by planning to marry again, but not to a man. While Bridgerton takes a relatively heteronormative approach to its fictional story, Gentleman Jack draws from history to show things weren’t ever quite so black and white. While not nearly as steamy as the aforementioned show, the whip-smart drama crackles with romantic tension and high drama.

6 The Crown (2016-Present)

Netflix The Crown Claire Foy
  • The Crown is available to stream on Netflix

The British royals remain interesting because of the high drama of their history, and the human side that many shows like Bridgerton explore, but The Crown took an entirely different approach. The series chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, and Imelda Staunton) from the start of her reign until the present. Part period piece and part political drama, The Crown's warts-and-all approach to the royals made it an instant hit. The entire timeline of The Crown spans decades, and though it has none of Bridgerton's steaminess, it doubles up on the intrigue and behind-the-scenes drama of one of the world's most powerful families.
