If you are a gamer you have probably come across the term RPG before, so how does the relate to board games like Dungeons & Dragons? Stripping the category back to its simplest description, a role-playing game is a game where the player assumes the role of fictional characters within a fictional world. This is how the term can be used to describe both board games and video games, as in both instances the player assumes the role of a fictional character within a fictional world. If you are an old Dungeons & Dragons head and have recently purchased a PS5, you may want to play an RPG on your new next-generation console. Alternatively, you may be an avid video-gamer and want to expand your catalog of games played. Either way, we have compiled a top-10 list of the best role-playing games that are a must-have if you are remotely interested in the genre. Let’s take a look. Role Playing Games (RPG) have a loyal fanbase and are played across multiple platforms the world over, making it one of the most popular game genre in the world. There are many reasons why RPGs have a large fanbase, for starters, role-playing video games usually have the richest and most dense storyline and that is the case for all the games on our list. The games included may differ in mechanics, perspective, or animation style but what they all share in common is their interesting storylines. One of the most enjoyable aspects of an RPG is the fact that your choices and decisions throughout the game will usually have an impact on the narrative, meaning the outcome of your particular decisions may be different from someone else who is playing the same game.
Character development is an important part of an RPG and the best role-playing game will allow for an interesting and unexpected character development, with plenty of quirky characters to meet along the way. If you are looking for a video game experience that is more thoughtful and rich than the usual shoot ‘em up style that has become popular within the last 15 years, then try one of these role-playing games for the PS5 we have included on our list. Happy gaming.
The enemies that you fight is done so in turn-based combat, so if you are a fan of the combat in games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Earthbound then this will be right up your street. The graphics are crisp and smooth, they don’t set the world on fire but do the job and make the storyline enjoyable to progress through. If you are looking for an old-style RPG then check Soul Hackers 2 out, it has been 26 years in the making after all.

Soul Hackers 2 is a supernatural RPG that sees the player play as the protagonist, Ringo, who has the little task of saving the whole of humanity from a devastating apocalypse. As the name suggests, Soul Hackers 2 is a prequel, a prequel to the 1997 game Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers which was initially released on the Sega Saturn, eventually making its way over to the first Playstation in 1999. Published by Atlas, Soul Hackers 2 is the fifth installment in the Devil Summoner series a video game franchise by developers Atlus.
Main character Ringo is an agent of the Aion, artificial intelligence that is created to help save humanity from its inevitable collapse. Their main task is to recruit different people for other groups of Devil Summoners, so they can assist in the saving of humanity against the apocalypse. There is a lot at stake! Gameplay consists of exploring around a futuristic city via a combination of 3D cutscenes or 2D character portraits to help move the story along.
- Perfect for fans of anime and Japanese RPG
- Easy controls to get the hang of
- Graphics are smooth and crisp
- The cutscenes won't be to everyone's taste
Another new point is the voice actors, main character Zack has been voiced by a completely different actor compared with the original, which is a slightly sore point for some diehard fans, but you can flick between either English or Japanese depending on what takes your fancy. If you want to stroll down memory lane, this is the game for you.

This one may be quite nostalgic for the Final Fantasy fans out there as developers Tose and Square Enix have clubbed together to fully remaster the 2007 action-role playing game, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Graphics have been fully remastered to cope with HD consoles and TVs and both Tose and Square Enix have done an outstanding job of faithfully restoring the game to better suit modern technological equipment. The original game was initially released on the Playstation Portable, so Tose had quite a job to get it up to standard, but we feel they have done a really great job.
Although the gameplay is pretty much identical to the PSP version, there are a lot of new updates that have been brought in for the remaster including a whole new soundtrack and arrangement by the original composer, Takeharu Ishimoto. The soundtrack is what we fell in love with on the PSP version, so it is nice to have a refresh composed by the same person who produce such a great original. There has been a total 3D overhaul in the game, encoming both backgrounds and characters which makes for a much more modern feeling game.
- The new soundtrack is fresh and captivating
- The game is the best it's ever looked in HD
- Good storyline with emotional punches
- The voice acting could be a lot better
Scarlet Nexus will really appeal to fans of different anime-style games and also those who love Japanese sci-fi.

Almost like a Murakami book, Scarlet Nexus blends classic anime design with Western science-fiction that combines to create a dystopian Punk game that is bound to convince you to plow hours of time into it. This action-role playing game allows you to play one of two characters, either Yuito Sumeragi or Kasane Randall, both fully qualified of the Other Suppression Force (OSF). The game is split into two different realities, the future and an alternate reality that has been developed and created through human brain matter. However, all is not well, as the alternate reality is under attack from mutants called ‘Others’ who feed on human brain matter and this is your ultimate job as a member of the OSF, to take protect society from the Others.
The game is played from a third-person perspective and as you progress through the story mode you can upgrade your characters skills through the brain map. The brain map is a skill tree that you continuously upgrade as you develop through the story. Both Yuito and Kasane are equipped with short range weapons but also have psychokinesis powers that can be upgraded. It is hack ’n’ slash combat, and you will spend most of your time fighting different creatures alongside different teammates that will begin to reveal themselves. A great feature of the game is being able to ‘borrow’ your teammates powers whilst in combat which keeps things exciting and really helps if you find yourself in a tricky situation.
- How Long To Beat
- 25 Hours
- The game is beautiful and will appeal to Japanese anime fans
- The fighting style and borrowing skills from teammates is very fun
- The story is a harrowing ride
- Not too suitable for fans who don't enjoy cutscenes
As mentioned, the game has been heavily influenced by the Final Fantasy series which is most prominent in its gameplay mechanics. It features a form of turn-based combat that has been heavily used in the Final Fantasy series. If you are a fan of Final Fantasy, you are bound to love Edge of Eternity.

Edge of Eternity is an interesting game and those who are interested in independent projects, which a ion for RPGs are bound to like this. Edge of Eternity has been developed by French based studio, Midgar Studio and has been a ion project since its conception. It feels like the game has been heavily influenced by Final Fantasy, which is perhaps an obvious comparison considering Midgar Studios is named after a fictional city within the Final Fantasy series.
Crowdfunding for Edge of Eternity was announced in 2013 and the studio managed to raise enough duns to start work which eventually lead to an early access version of the game in 2018. The main story follows protagonist Drayon, who is a solider that is fighting to defend his world which has been invaded by a technologically advanced alien race. Drayon’s storyline further thickens as he soon turns his attention to curing his mother who has been infected by a biological agent that was introduced by the alien race. The world you are to explore is beautiful and visually stunning, although during the game there is sometime a lacking of tasks or side quests one can do in the world.
- The world you have to explore is gorgeous
- The soundtrack really suits the gameplay and is very immersive
- An indie project that has been filled with love
- The gameplay can be a bit janky and laggy in certain parts
Be warned, this is not an easy game and there is plenty of cut scene dialogue that you have to sit through, but if that isn’t something that bothers you then Elex 2 may be right up your street.

Well, if there is one thing we can say about the people over at Piranha Bytes is they love developing a beautiful looking RPG that is incredibly difficult and Elex II is no exception. Unlike the debut game, Elex, you can now select a difficulty on the story mode but even the easiest difficulty is rather unforgiving! This is not a game for the weak hearted or easily dissuaded.
Saying that, like the original Elex game, there is a beautifully expansive open world that you will absolutely love traveling around as you try and complete the narrative storyline. The player plays in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world and has to travel around in a jetpack, what more is there to want? During the game you play as the protagonist Jax and gameplay is situated several years after he defeated the Hybrid in the first installment of Elex. This time you must face a new dangerous enemy that appears from the sky which is endangering all life on the planet, Magalan. Your ultimate mission is to unite the various factions of Magalan against the alien enemy and to find Jax’s son Dex, who has been separated from his father.
- The game is tough, but you can now select a story difficulty
- The post-apocolyptic sci-fi world is massive and exciting
- A really rewarding RPG
- Although different difficulties are available, it's still tough!
We are not going to reveal much more about the storyline, only that your task is to discover a dark mystery that can only be achieved by someone with power like a medium, you’ll have to uncover the rest. The soundtrack deserves a particular mention as it is incredibly eerie and moves well with the story, it was co-composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski and Akira Yamaoka, and we certainly hope we will hear their work on more horror RPG’s to come. If you have been a fan of the Silent Hill video game franchise, then you will love The Medium.

Post-communist Poland is perhaps not the first place or era you would expect to find a supernatural RPG, but The Medium developed by Bloober Team is set just there. The Medium is a psychological horror that, when released to Playstation 5, was met with favorable reviews by critics and the public alike. As the name suggests, you play as a medium called Marianne who can navigate between the physical world and the spirit world, you will find that being able to travel into the spirit realm really assists in solving the puzzles this game sets out for you.
The creators themselves have itted The Medium has a mature and ambiguous story, nothing is really as it seems and there are multiple different perspectives that reveal something different about the storyline. The ambiguousness of the storyline is deliberate, and it helps upkeep the mysteriousness that this game is shrouded in, there is an overarching oppressiveness of the game that is omnipresent.
- The game has an oppressive overarching atmosphere, great for a horror
- It is a mature game that takes you on a story with deep issues
- The score is magnificent
- The game is a little on the short side
The aesthetic is really appealing and fighting your way through a dystopian Paris really captures the imagination. The only slight critique we have is that the game is not very long, we reckon you could complete Steelrising within about 15 hours considering you don’t complete the side missions.

Steelrising

Steelrising is a fascinating game thanks to its storyline, it has taken inspiration from the French Revolution, if the French Revolution was in a dystopian sci-fi world teaming with robots. This alternate reality ARPG is set in Paris in the wake of the French Revolution; instead of using mere human soldiers, King Louis XVI has created an army of automatons to destroy the uprisings and put an end to the revolution. Pretty kooky, right?
The interesting storyline is matched with equally interesting characters and enemies that you will come up against. Steelrising is played in third-person mode with combination combat, so you can string together jumps, attacks, and parries to defeat whoever is standing in your way. There are different weapon types a builds to choose from, so make sure you pick correctly, we recommend an agile weapon to better knock down enemies with speed. Steelrising has been put in the ’Soulslike’ video game category, so if Dark Souls is up your street then you should feel right at home. Although similar to Dark Souls, it is probably a little bit easier, thanks largely to the ease in which you can stockpile health consumables which makes fighting enemies and exploring Paris a lot more enjoyable.
- The aesthetic is really interesting and different from others on our list
- Unique weapons and combat
- We enjoy the mixture of fantasy and history
- It is quite an easy game to complete/not extremely challenging
Greedfall didn’t have a massive budget behind but don’t let this dissuade you as it is a wonderful RPG with hands-on controls over dialogue options, player choice, customization, and play styles. There is a good storyline, interesting characters, and a unique time period. If you think these attributes make for a good video game, then give Greedfall a try.

For those who are fans of other play styles than fighting enemies with physical combat then GreedFall is a great option. Sure you can turn to violence if you have too but GreedFall allows you to play the game using diplomacy skills, deception, or stealth as you travel across a relatively undiscovered land. Developed by Spiders and published by Focus Home Interactive, GreedFall was initially released in 2019 for the PS4 but has since been restored for the Playstation 5, and we are very happy it has.
You begin with choosing a character, that you can customize as you see fit, and chose their abilities to suit your game style. It is your task, as a noble of the Merchant Congregation, to travel around the island of Teer Fradee and established a relationship with the natives of the island. There is deadly disease, power-hungry officials and magical powers possessed by the natives which culminate in a storyline based on decision and judgment. It is quite mature and makes for a really fascinating storyline.
- We really enjoy the freedom of choice you have
- The characters are interesting and accompany the storyline well
- You'll like this if you enjoy having the freedom to complete the storyline via different routes
- It can be a little slow-paced at parts
Now the game is pretty hard, and that is nothing new for a FromSoftware game, so if you are looking for a game that you can turn on and switch your brain off, you are probably not going to enjoy this too much. However, what makes Elden Ring addictive is if you do get stuck, or come across an undefeatable boss that has been pounding you for hours, you can just walk away. The various different side quests, stories, and explorable lands are always open to revisiting, at any time. You will never face a complete stone wall as there is so much on offer.

Elden Ring is a spectacular game. One that is going to keep you hooked for hours upon hours. Whether that is down to the curiousness of the different lands you can explore, or the sheer determination to defeat the incredibly difficult bosses that you will eventually face, it is a game that is equally rewarding as it is tricky. The open worlds are particularly dense and there are many side quests that you will find yourself stumbling into.
The open-world element in Elden Ring is probably the most enjoyable compared to every other open-world game on the market as it actually feels like you are free to explore without the overarching storyline directing you to different places. The naturalness of the game is exemplified by the fact that there are no exclamation markers on the map guiding you to complete specific quests. Although this level of ambiguity can sometimes make the main storyline hard to follow for those who are new to games like Elden Ring, it is certainly worth the dedication to complete. Unlike similar games, such as Skyrim, jumping into a different region means coming against enemies of different levels.
Elden Ring does not scale enemy levels to your own, so you are constantly coming up against tougher opponents that you have to really figure out how to defeat. Making the victory even more rewarding. If you are a curious traveler, the game always seems to reward you. With every ambushed goblin you kill or new NPC that you meet, the game will reward you. Whether that be with a new Ash of War, valuable consumable, or interesting weapon there is always going to be a quest worth doing or a new cave to explore.
- You can literally explore the open world for hours on end, it's awesome
- Elden Ring allows for a variety of different play styles, from brazen to stealthy
- The story line is captivating and will leave you wanting more
- The bosses can be quite tricky to defeat
The number of collectibles, missions, side quests, and characters can be a little overwhelming at times and at its worst, can be a little distracting. However, this is a tiny gripe and all the positives definitely make up for it.

The sequel to 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West is a fully immersive action role-playing game that is densely packed with weapons, objectives, and collectibles. First things first, the game is absolutely stunning. There is a beautiful natural element to a lot of the features in the game, from the moss on the stones to the spectacular lighting, it is a visual feast and is a testament to the power of modern technology. The characters are very realistic and for the most part, you can see the emotion in their eyes, it's quite spooky! The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, based in the Western United States. Recovering in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event, the main protagonist is left to navigate a dangerous world filled with mechanical robotic animals and hostile tribes through many environments. Forbidden West is a lot more detailed than its predecessor, if Zero Dawn was a lot more 'bare bones' then Forbidden West is the whole feast. The map is a lot bigger, which can take hours to explore. Guerilla Games wanted to make everything bigger, better, and more beautiful, and they have certainly achieved that. The stylistic design is really spectacular, and the mechanical robots you face are very interesting and a wondrous aspect of the game. Whilst fighting, there is a lot of variety which keeps the gameplay from becoming stale and there is plenty of fighting styles to keep all types of players interested. Something that may become distracting is the sheer amount of things to do and collect.
- Forbidden West is beautiful to look at
- Really good value for money as play time is well over 100 hours
- A wide range of weapons you can use and upgrade
- It is quite dialogue-heavy
