We’ve taken a look at both the film and book and found the ten most powerful, important and entertaining quotes from this installment into the beloved series.
“The Emotional Range Of A Teaspoon”
Hermione is often used more for her intelligence than her comedy value, but every now and again she drops an impressive one-liner. when she punched Malfoy in the face in The Prisoner Of Azkaban?
Well, in The Order Of The Phoenix she drops an impressive burn on Ron in the form of: “Just because you have the emotional range of a teaspoon.”
“The Position Of Defence Against The Dark Arts Professor...”
While Dolores Umbridge is arguably the easiest to hate character in the entire Harry Potter franchise, everyone is very much still on board the Snape-hate train during this film.
When she asks him, “Professor Snape, you first applied for the position of Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, did you not?” and continues to dig into his failures, we can’t help but respect her.
“Tom...”
Many people in the Harry Potter world are aware that Voldemort’s name when he was a younger man was Tom Riddle, but most wouldn’t dream of referring to him as such.
Dumbledore, the one person Voldemort is scared of, immediately shuts down any power Voldemort thinks he might have by returning to his old, ordinary, half-blood name: “It was foolish of you to come here tonight, Tom.”
“Nice One James”
This quote is a particularly powerful one, as they’re not only the last words we ever hear uttered by Sirius Black, but they also return to the pain Sirius and Harry both feel at losing James.
“Nice one James,” suggests that Sirius never quite managed to see Harry as anything more than an extension of his best friend, but it’s still heart-breaking.
“I Killed Sirius Black!”
From a completely different angle comes Bellatrix Lestrange’s jubilant, triumphant sing-song about murdering her cousin.
She prances through the Ministry chanting “I killed Sirius Black” while Harry ravenously chases her down. It might be hard to hear just moments after Sirius’ death, but it really proves her genuine, irredeemable evil.
“Come Quietly...”
While Dumbledore is mostly a kind, gentle man, there are the occasional moments where he has to prove that he is the most powerful person in the room. His speech before leaving Hogwarts is a multi-layered, coolly-delivered threat of the highest degree.
“Well - it's just that you seem to be laboring under the delusion that I am going to - what is the phrase - "Come quietly". I am afraid that I am not going to come quietly at all, Cornelius. I have absolutely no intention of being sent to Azkaban. I could break out, of course - but what a waste of time, and frankly, I can think of a host of things I would rather be doing.”
“Something Worth Fighting For”
While the Harry Potter books are typically centred on light-hearted scenarios, there are many points when it has to drift into truly dramatic territory.
As such, Harry’s claim that they (unlike Voldemort) have “something worth fighting for” is a particularly powerful, strong message, especially when the wizarding world is on the cusp of war again.
“This Is A Lie...”
“You have been told that a certain dark wizard is at large once again. This. Is. A. Lie.” These are the words Umbridge says when Harry tries to make everyone aware that Voldemort has returned.
The audience's frustration with her as a person in the first place has already reached lofty heights, but this is only exacerbated when we have quite literally seen the return of Voldemort with her own eyes. She’s lying about a lie.
“I’m Quite Proud...”
By The Order Of The Phoenix, Neville Longbottom is right in the middle of his transition from timid to heroic, and one of the first times we ever saw him talk about his parents really showed this developing bravery.
“Fourteen years ago, a Death Eater named Bellatrix Lestrange used the Cruciatus Curse on my parents. She tortured them for information, but they never gave in. I'm quite proud to be their son. But I'm not sure I'm ready for everyone to know just yet.”
“You’re Not A Bad Person...”
This quote becomes even more powerful after The Order Of The Phoenix, as it allows the influence and legacy of Sirius Black to continue. As any father-figure would, he helps Harry overcome his biggest concern.
“I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.”
