After it pioneered the R-rated bromantic comedy as a viable blockbuster genre, many movies like Wedding Crashers followed. Wedding Crashers follows immature bachelors John Beckwith (Wilson) and Jeremy Grey (Vaughn) who infiltrate weddings they weren’t invited to in order to pick up women. Despite their best efforts to avoid settling down, by the end of the movie, they’ve both found true love in meaningful relationships. Along with the works of Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith, Wedding Crashers helped to create a new subgenre of comedy that subverts the audience’s expectations of its raunchy humor with a surprisingly sweet message.

When it was released in 2005, Wedding Crashers was a sleeper hit. It was met with favorable reviews from critics and grossed more than $288 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Wedding Crashers arrived at a time when public interest in R-rated comedies was waning, and contributed to an R-rated comedy renaissance. Like any popular movie, Wedding Crashers had plenty of imitators. From the similar bromantic antics of The Hangover to the later Wilson/Vaughn team-up in The Internship to its female-led equivalent Bridesmaids, there are many great movies like Wedding Crashers.

Set in 1985, The Wedding Singer sees comedy icon Adam Sandler play a nice guy with a broken heart whose misery is compounded by his job as a wedding singer. Jilted at the altar by his fiancée, he crashes hard, only to find love again when he meets Julia (Drew Barrymore), who asks for help planning her wedding. Then, the race is on to show Julia how he feels before her wedding.

In Adam Sandler's first collaboration with Drew Barrymore, The Wedding Singer stars the A-list funnyman as Robbie Hart, the titular performer who sings at people’s weddings but can’t seem to find the right partner for himself. When he’s hired to sing at Julia Sullivan's (Barrymore) wedding, he quickly falls for her and tries to win her heart away from her philandering fiancé.

It also showed a softer side of the actor as a romantic lead following his breakout roles as hilariously childish characters like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.

Sandler’s lead character is a quintessential underdog, and he and Barrymore share impeccable chemistry. With Wedding Crashers’ signature blend of grossout gags and heartwarming romance, The Wedding Singer is one of Sandler’s best movies. It also showed a softer side of the actor as a romantic lead following his breakout roles as hilariously childish characters like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. Having Sandler star in a rom-com showed how juvenile humor and a little heart can mix nicely.

Jim and Michelle prepare for their wedding amidst comedic chaos involving their friends. With Stifler playing a pivotal role in the festivities, the gang navigates embarrassing mishaps and unexpected challenges while aiming to pull off the ultimate celebration of love and friendship.

Main Genre
Comedy

The sex-crazed adolescents of the American Pie franchise had started to grow up by the time the third entry, American Wedding, rolled around. After spending the first movie in high school and the second movie in college, American Wedding saw Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) as grown adults getting married. Of course, their nuptials include a lot of embarrassing sex-related mishaps as well as the disgusting antics of Stifler (Seann William Scott).

American Wedding is one of the hard-R comedy movies like Wedding Crashers that actually came out before Wedding Crashers. Like the hit Wilson-Vaughin comedy, American Wedding hilariously sets its broad humor and scatological gags against the elegant backdrop of a wedding ceremony. The America Pie movies have always leaned into the gross-out gags from the beginning, but seeing Jim and Michelle's relationship at this stage is genuinely touching.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall follows Peter Bretter, a musician who, following a bad breakup with his girlfriend, Sarah Marshall, goes on a vacation to a Hawaiian resort only to discover that Sarah is also at the resort with her new boyfriend. Jason Segel stars as Peter, alongside Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Russell Brand.

Jason Segel wrote his own starring vehicle with Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He plays Peter Bretter, a TV composer whose long-time girlfriend (Kristen Bell), the star of the crime drama he scores, breaks up with him. In an attempt to move on from the relationship, Peter travels to Hawaii, only to find that his ex and her new beau (Russell Brand) are staying at the same resort.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a quintessential breakup movie. It shares Wedding Crashers’ anything-goes comedic sensibility, including Segel's famous nude scene, but, also like Wedding Crashers, it doesn’t shy away from deeper emotions. Segel is wonderful at playing the sadsack character, making the audience find humor in his romantic struggles while also rooting for him to find some happiness elsewhere. The movie is further elevated by a fantastic cast, including Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, and Mila Kunis as Peter's new love interest.

WHERE TO WATCH

The Internship is a comedy film directed by Shawn Levy, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as two middle-aged salesmen who intern at Google after being laid off. They compete against tech-savvy millennials for permanent positions while navigating a digital world unfamiliar to them, creating various comedic situations. The film explores themes of career reinvention and the clash between different generations in a modern workplace.

The Internship is a movie like Wedding Crashers in a literal sense because it’s headlined by the same comedy duo. The film reteamed Wilson and Vaughn as Nick Campbell and Billy McMahon, a pair of aging guys who lose their jobs and attempt to keep up with a changing marketplace by interning at Google. While they are viewed as old timers who are out of touch, they also demonstrate that their perspective has more to offer than it seems.

While The Internship isn’t quite as sharp or focused as Wedding Crashers, it has a lot of fun with its tech industry setting, and Wilson and Vaughn’s on-screen chemistry makes them endlessly watchable. They also play more likable characters as two middle-aged guys trying to start again. Also like Wedding Crashers, Will Ferrell shows up in a cameo to add to the fun of the movie.

6 The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

Steve Carell got his start as a movie star with the title role in Judd Apatow’s directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Andy Stitzer (Carell) is a mild-mannered guy who has somehow managed to go his entire adult life without having sex. When his coworkers find this out, they set out on a mission to ensure Andy finally does the deed. However, along the way, Andy begins to fall in love.

If there is one other movie that deserves to be mentioned alongside Wedding Crashers as helping boost the popularity of R-rated comedies in the 2000s, it is this one. Much like Wedding Crashers, The 40-Year-Old Virgin starts out with a raunchy premise about getting laid and ends up being a heartfelt story about falling in love. It established Apatow’s penchant for blending crude comedy with subversive sincerity.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a 2008 comedy directed by Kevin Smith, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. The film revolves around two longtime friends, Zack and Miri, who decide to make an adult film to solve their financial problems. As they recruit friends and acquaintances to help with the project, they navigate the complexities of their relationship and the unexpected consequences of their decision.

Long before Wedding Crashers, Kevin Smith was a filmmaker who made a career out of R-rated comedies and his movie Chasing Amy helped to show how such movies with dirty jokes and foul language could also be sweet and heartwarming. Smith returned to this style in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks star as the titular cash-strapped roommates who decide to make an adult film to pay their rent.

Not only is Zack and Miri Make a Porno a shamelessly raunchy movie like Wedding Crashers, but its X-rated storyline pushes the raunch even further than Wedding Crashers. Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a perfect example of a vulgar sex comedy that turns out to be a lot sweeter than it seems, as two childhood best friends discover that they’re in love with each other.

WHERE TO WATCH

There's Something About Mary is a 1998 romantic comedy directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly. The film stars Cameron Diaz as Mary, the object of affection for multiple men, including Ben Stiller's character Ted. The story blends humor and romance as Ted attempts to reconnect with his high school crush, leading to a series of outlandish and comedic events. Matt Dillon also stars as a private investigator entangled in the pursuit.

Other pioneers in the raunchy comedy landscape are the Farrelly brothers who broke out with their hilarious buddy movie Dumb and Dumber, but really pushed the R-rating with their hilarious rom-com There's Something About Mary. Ben Stiller stars as Ted Stroehmann, a singleton looking for love who decides to track down his high school sweetheart, played by Cameron Diaz, only to find that he’s not the only one who’s madly in love with her.

Wedding Crashers subverted the expectations of the usually sappy romantic comedy genre with its wild, raunchy sense of humor. However, There's Something About Mary proved just how successful a movie like this could be as it was a massive box office hit and helped to launch Cameron Diaz's movie career. The infamous "hair gel" scene alone is enough to have cemented it as an R-rated comedy classic.

Bridesmaids follows Annie (Kristen Wiig), a perpetual underachiever in her thirties who is asked to serve as maid of honor for her friend Lillian's (Maya Rudolph) wedding. After a string of misfortunes leaves Annie feeling inferior to bridesmaid Helen, she begins questioning her life and her friendship with Lillian. Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and Chris O'Dowd also star.

Not every movie like Wedding Crashers is a male-driven comedy. Wedding Crashers’ female-led equivalent, Bridesmaids, stars Kristen Wiig as Annie Walker, a woman trying to finally get her own life on track when her best friend (Maya Rudolph) gets engaged. As maid-of-honor, she attempts to give her friend a perfect send-off only for things to spiral out of control.

Like how Wedding Crashers helped make Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn huge stars in the comedy genre, Bridesmaids launched the careers of Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy.

Like Wedding Crashers, Bridesmaids has plenty of crude humor – including one iconic sequence in which the formal setting of a dress shop provides the backdrop to the messy aftermath of a mass food poisoning – but it also has a tangible emotional core. Wiig and co-writer Annie Mumolo even earned an Oscar nomination for their hilarious script. Like how Wedding Crashers helped make Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn huge stars in the comedy genre, Bridesmaids launched the careers of Wiig, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy.

Old School stars Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, and Luke Wilson as three friends who miss the glory days of college. Now in their 30s, the trio start their own fraternity to try to relive their college experience. Todd Phillips directed the 2003 film, who would go on to direct The Hangover in 2009.

Writers
Todd Phillips, Scot Armstrong

Wedding Crashers was seen as part of a comedy era known as the Frat Pack, featuring a bunch of the same actors appearing in each other's juvenile and hilarious comedy movies. While Wedding Crashers was one of the biggest hits for the Frat Pack, Old School was perhaps the movie that helped get it all started. Vaughn teamed up with the other Wilson brother, Luke Wilson, as well as Will Ferrell for Old School. It revolves around a group of middle-aged men who start their own college fraternity to avoid a legal loophole in the housing system.

Old School has much less heart than Wedding Crashers as few of the romances in the movie are particularly charming. However, it is a movie that showcased just how fun it is to see middle-aged men get up to the kind of wild antics usually seen in teen movies. The three leads share wonderful chemistry and they are ed by many hilarious actors in ing roles.

The Hangover follows a group of friends who head to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. With Doug (Justin Bartha) preparing for his wedding, his friends Phil, (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) take him on a night he'll never forget, After blacking out, the group - who call themselves the "Wolf Pack" - realize that they've lost Doug, and must retrace the steps of the most outrageous night of their lives in order to find him.

Writers
Scott Moore, Jon Lucas

In recent years, R-rated comedies like Wedding Crashers have failed to secure theatrical releases and have become much less common in general. In examining this trend, The Hangover is often pointed to as one of the last examples of a truly big hit in the genre as well as an example of how audiences will indeed turn out for such movies. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis star in The Hangover as a group of guys who head to Las Vegas for a bachelor party and end up misplacing the groom.

The Hangover is one of many movies like Wedding Crashers that followed its box office success. It shares the earlier R-rated comedy blockbuster’s colorful characters and rapid-fire gag rate, as well as its focus on friendship. The Hangover's talented cast anchors the film with palpable chemistry, and director Todd Phillips keeps the mystery storyline moving with plenty of clues to the whereabouts of Doug (Justin Bartha).
