Crossovers in games are rare, but even rarer still are crossovers involving massive franchises. However, the trading card giant Dungeons and Dragons to create an amazing new card set.

The new card set, pick up a new game. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

All in all, the set introduces 281 regular cards (101 commons, 80 uncommon, 60 rares, 20 mythic rares, and 20 basic lands) and includes randomly inserted special treatments of all cards. All of these new strategies and mechanics.

As a red/black mana deck, Planar Portal finds some interesting ways to ramp up its power levels, using exiling cards and pulling them into play.

This deck requires some thinking to be used effectively, but once you've got the basic strategy down the deck really excels and can win you the majority of games. One gripe of this deck however is that while it can put you ahead 9 times out of 10 and is very well-equipped to play out the long game, it struggles to close out the game and can do with some minor tweaks to give it more options to deliver the killing blow.

The Planar Portal commander deck comes with some extra offerings in the box as well as the 100-card ready-to-play deck. You'll also receive an exclusive Adventures In The Forgotten Realms-themed deck box, with red and black colors to match the deck itself. There will also be 10 double-sided tokens, if you ever need them, as well as a life tracker. All of this means that as soon as you open the box you can jump right into a game of the Commander format, and follow along with the basic strategy guide to get you started on your journey to play Magic: The Gathering.

Adventures in The Forgotten Realms Commander Deck – Planar Portal

Getting all 4 of the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms' commander decks in one simple bundle is the best option, it saves you money, and you can jump into playing with 3 other friends right away. Each deck comes with everything that you expect if you were to buy each individually, of course, the 100-card ready-to-play deck, an AFR-themed deck box with colors to match each deck, 10 double-sided tokens for each deck, and a life tracker for each deck. This is a great bundle for any collector of Magic: The Gathering, or for a group of friends who want to try each commander deck without having to fork out too much.

The four decks included in this bundle are all great pre-cons, with only some minor tweaks needed to make them more competitive. Draconic Rage is a red, green mana deck that is all about overwhelming your opponents with dragons and quick attacks. Aura of Courage is a green, white, blue mana deck that is a Voltron deck, using equipment and auras to buff smaller cards and make them a larger threat for low mana cost. Dungeons of Death, as the name suggests, involves some necromancy and bringing creatures back from the dead and onto your battlefield. Lastly, Planar Portal is a deck that exiles creatures to bring them back into play later in the game, creating a large and hopefully devastating board presence.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander Deck Bundle

If dragons are your thing then this deck is definitely for you, Draconic Rage is all about creating big powerful dragons in order to deal overwhelming damage to your opponents. The commander of this deck, Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients, lets you create a 5/4 Dragon spirit token every time he is dealt damage, but sadly whenever that dragon deals damage it must be sacrificed. This ability can be played both as an actively-aggressive ability or ively for defense, because every time a die is rolled Vrondiss may deal 1 damage to itself, so... infinite dragons anyone?

It's a solid precon for players of any ability, the core mechanics are simple; to create lots of strong dragons and have them attack en masse. It relies on damage and aggression early on to crush the opponent and stop them from building a large board presence. With lots of land cards available to naturally draw, the deck does not need to rely on drawing lots of cards in order to be successful. However, due to the high cost of some cards, there can be issues early game with land/mana count and may take a couple of turns for things to get rolling.

Key Features
  • 100-card ready-to-play deck
  • Red/Green mana deck
  • Includes 10 token cards and deck box
  • Includes several foil cards

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander Deck - Draconic Rage

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Set Booster Box is a great way to build your collection quickly and get your hands on a load of new cards from the new set. This booster box will give you 360 Magic cards in one go, from 30 packs, each containing 12 cards.

This set booster box is more likely to give you multiple rares than draft booster boxes, giving you more powerful and useful cards than other box sets. Each pack contains 1- Rares or Mythic Rares, 7-10 Uncommons and Commons, and 1 Guaranteed land card. So no matter what you are guaranteed a good spread of cards to build decks from, or add cards to already existing decks and change up the gameplay slightly.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Set Booster Box

If you love Voltron decks, buffing cards as much as possible to make them a huge threat, then Aura of Courage is definitely the choice for you.

The commander of the deck, Galea, Kindler of Hope, is all about getting Aura and Equipment out as quickly and efficiently as possible, letting you look at the top card of your library and then if it's and Aura or Equipment play it directly from the top of your library and attach it to a card. The deck makes use of some great new cards from the AFR set, as well as using some Voltron staples, which all help to make the deck run reasonably well. However, the deck does lack some consistency and could do with a few changes to help achieve this and let you get more action and closing power.

Topping off the commander deck itself is a few extra goodies in the box, which means you can jump right into playing a game as soon as your new deck arrives. As with all pre-cons, you'll find a basic strategy guide, giving you a quick rundown on how the deck plays and the basic strategies you should try to implement, great for new players. You'll also get an AFR-themed deck box with green, white, and blue colors to highlight the mana of the deck inside. There will also be 10 double-sided tokens, and a life tracker die.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander Deck – Aura of Courage

As the name might suggest, Dungeons of Death is all about getting huge white and black creatures into your graveyard and then, using a little bit of necromancy, getting them onto your battlefield to crush your opponents.

This kind of re-animator theme is very popular in the Commander format, and it certainly fits with the theme of Adventures in the Forgotten Realms bringing that element of D&D to Magic: The Gathering. The commander of this deck Sefris of the Hidden Ways is able to reanimate creatures herself but adds a very D&D twist and requires you to complete one of the AFR signature dungeon cards before being able to do so. Out of the box, the deck is very fun to play and doesn't necessarily need a lot of changes to be more competitive, it's one of the more well-realized pre-con commander decks out there and meets the general themes that it sets out to achieve.

As with most pre-con commander decks you can expect to find a couple of extras in the box to sweeten the deal slightly and add a little bit more value to a deck which you already save a decent amount on if you were to buy each card as a single. In the box, you'll find a basic strategy guide to get you started. You'll also find an AFR-themed deck box with white, blue, and black colors to highlight the deck's mana colors. As an added bonus there'll also be a life tracker and 10 double-sided token cards, meaning you can jump right into playing.

Key Features
  • 100 card ready to play deck
  • White/Blue/Black mana deck
  • Includes 10 tokens and deck box
  • Includes several foil cards
