Throughout their magical adventures, the player will come across plenty of students who bring life to the game, but Hogwarts Legacy's best companions are ultimately at the top of the list. Unfortunately, the wizarding world RPG only contains a small handful of these fleshed-out side characters, which can be a bit of a disappointment, considering the many memorable characters from the main Harry Potter series. However, their unique personalities, complex motives, and emotional stories that Hogwarts Legacy's companions offer make up for this, as they're some of the best aspects of the game as a whole.
In general, the companions in Hogwarts Legacy are a bit lackluster (if not misleading entirely), as the game doesn't have a true follower system in place. Even after completing the associated relationship quests with these characters, the protagonist can't ask them to tag along for any adventures, request that they hang onto their items, or even partake in any special conversations. Instead, their dedicated side quests are the only chance the player has to spend time with them, making the dialogue and backstories found therein the determining factors behind Hogwarts Legacy's best companions.
4 Amit Thakkar
Amit Thakkar is unfortunately at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Hogwarts Legacy's companions - not for any narrative reasons, but rather because he's simply not considered a true companion. Before the game's release, Amit's reveal came as a huge relief to Ravenclaws, who were the only ones missing a significant character to their name. Many believed that the self-proclaimed astronomy buff would be the House's companion, but sadly, this turned out not to be the case. Unlike the other entries, he's missing a dedicated quest line, which automatically makes him Hogwarts Legacy's worst "companion."
Amit Thakkar is still worth an honorable mention, though, as he's one of the more significant characters in Hogwarts Legacy. His companionship and knowledge of Gobledegook, the goblin language, is crucial to completing the main story, and it's thanks to his kindness in lending the player a telescope that they're able to find and solve all of Hogwarts Legacy's astronomy tables. It's a shame that his story wasn't explored further, as his undeniable intelligence and awkward, nerdy charm would have likely made him a companion for the books (plus, Ravenclaws deserve justice).
3 Natsai Onai
Conversely, Natsai Onai is a designated companion in Hogwarts Legacy, but she's, unfortunately, the least impressive of the three. Being a Gryffindor, it's no surprise that her storyline entails a brave, relentless push for justice in the wizarding world - and there's no problem in wanting to do what's right - but her quests suffer from a lack of excitement. Even with a strong backstory, they can sometimes come off as mere "kill the bad guy" missions, and things only truly get interesting toward the end of her arc, when Natsai suffers from an injury thanks to an act of selflessness.
What makes Natty a fascinating character is her one-of-a-kind backstory, which could have benefited from some more time in the spotlight. She does indeed often speak of her time at the wizarding world's largest school, Uagadou in Hogwarts Legacy, but players don't actually get to see the things she describes learning and being able to do in-game. For example, she is a ionate Animagus with the ability to turn into a gazelle, but not once does she demonstrate this incredible magical power to the protagonist.
Not being able to see her as an Animagus, or showcase other unique skills like wandless magic, is a tragically missed opportunity. Natsai likely could have been Hogwarts Legacy's best companion if she was given the opportunity to showcase her true potential.
2 Poppy Sweeting
Hufflepuff's companion in Hogwarts Legacy, Poppy Sweeting, is contrastingly one of the better characters that players can choose to spend their time with. Although they won't meet her until autumn rolls around, they're bound to quickly develop an attachment to her nonetheless, as her personality and interests lead the player on some truly once-in-a-lifetime adventures. After all, it's entirely thanks to her relationship quests that the protagonist is able to share some breathtaking interactions with magical creatures, such as doing a favor for a fire-breathing dragon or talking to majestic Centaurs.
Even for students not interested in the world of beasts, Poppy remains one of Hogwarts Legacy's best companions, and her quests are well worth seeing through to the end. Any witch and wizard wanting to do good will find themselves immersed in her storyline, as they're able to save an entire species from extinction, and more pressingly, stop some dark wizards from profiting off the harm of helpless animals. If not for altruistic purposes, Poppy's bubbly personality itself is quite contagious, and she's sure to make the player crack a smile as one of the game's most comforting characters.
1 Sebastian Sallow
Hogwarts Legacy's best companion is Sebastian Sallow by a long shot. Being a Slytherin with a typical interest in the Dark Arts, some players might be initially hesitant to grow close with him, but before long, they'll likely find themselves entranced in his complicated, morally grey character arc. For those interested in becoming a dark wizard in Hogwarts Legacy, Sebastian Sallow's quests are absolutely essential, as he's the only one capable of (or willing to) teach the player the three Unforgivable Curses, which are hands-down the strongest spells in the game.
However, following Sebastian's story doesn't require switching to the dark side, as it's possible to circumvent learning the Unforgivables and instead watch his descent into desperation from the sidelines. Whichever approach a witch or wizard decides to take, they'll be met with the same heart-wrenching tale of a well-intentioned brother, who's willing to go to extreme lengths to save his ill sister from her unfortunate fate.
As Sebastian succumbs to the Dark Arts, burning bridges in his wake, it's up to the player to decide whether he's in the right or wrong. Arguably being the best quest line in the game - even rivaling the main story - it's apparent why Sebastian is Hogwarts Legacy's best companion.
