James Gunn is a busy filmmaker. After writing and directing the hit Marvel film The Belko Experiment.
The Belko Experiment is a horror film about a group of employees who are locked in their office building and ordered to start killing each other by a mysterious voice. It originally played at the Toronto International Film Festival, and has been picked up for wide release by Blumhouse Tilt and Orion Pictures.
Today, Gunn released a new extended trailer on his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2).
The opening scene of the trailer shows Espenscheid and some of his co-workers smoking on the roof of the building. When they are reminded that Belko tests employees for smoking and they could be fired for doing it, all Espenscheid has to say about it is, "Quit getting so worked up." There is also a reminder of the contract they signed in order to work at Belko. Whatever they do in that building, it certainly seems like a fairly strict place to work.
After that, the trailer heads into the familiar footage from its predecessors. The building's windows are covered with metal shades, employees are ordered to start killing, and they do. All kinds of weapons are found, everything from guns to knives, from meat cleavers to molotov cocktails, as most of the employees of Belko decide that they would rather kill than be killed.
The concept of a group of people locked up together and forced to kill in order to survive is a recurring one in the horror genre. It was famously done in the various Saw movies, and in recent independent horror films Hunger and Circle. It will be interesting to see how Gunn brings his unique voice to the trend and how his film stands out.
