A former developer for the Battlefield 6 is approaching launch but has not yet been officially revealed by Battlefield Studios nor EA.

Reacting to leaked footage on Twitter, former Battlefield developer David Goldfarb said, "Oh the BC2 vibes this is giving me, having flashbacks to the first time we playtested [Arica] Harbor," (via GameSpot). Goldfarb worked on both Bad Compnay entries and Battlefield 3, an era ed fondly by fans. Arica Harbor is a notable favorite from Bad Company 2 among longtime players. He clarifies in a reply that the destruction specifically reminds him of Bad Company 2, though he its "movement looks a little weird" and that the character designs appear "very generic."

Former Producer States Some Issues With Footage

Generic Characters Are What BF Players Want

Two Battlefield 2042 Specialists, Zain and Falck, holding and pointing assault rifles.

The leaked footage shows a player fighting other infantry in and around partially destroyed buildings, and among the debris surrounding them. At one point, they are pinned down by a tank, which destroys the facade of the building they're in, and help destroy it with their under-mounted grenade launcher. Goldfarb praised Battlefield 6's destruction specifically, but wasn't so sure about traversal mechanics and how the characters looked, calling the latter uninspired.

It's true that the soldiers look very plain, but this may also be a huge boon for many veteran BF players. Battlefield 2042's Specialists were not well received, and many have been hoping that the series would return to its focus on regular infantry – the series is often praised for letting players step into the shoes of infantry grunts. Goldfarb remarks that the movement issues could be down to the player using a controller (rather than a keyboard and mouse), but it's also an early build, so the animations and locomotion may not be final.

Our Take: Bad Company 2 Vibes Is Exactly What Battlefield Needs

Even If BF6 Looks Closer To 3 & 4

Recent Battlefield titles have had decreasing levels of destructibility, and Goldfarb's assessment of the leaked footage is on point – it definitely seems like the series is aiming to return to Bad Company 2 levels of destruction. Full building facades coming down addresses a lot of criticisms aimed at titles like Battlefield 5 and 2042. So far ahead of launch, it's hard to know how well Battlefield 6 will deliver, but the leaks are at least promising, and the comparisons to BC2, one of the series' more beloved entries, are reasons to keep an eye on the game.

Aesthetically, though, BF6 looks like it hews closer to Battlefield 3 and 4. Both followed Bad Company 2 and are securely part of a cherished era for the long-running FPS series. Many players long for the series to return to that more grounded design, and these – ittedly brief and low-quality – early looks have me personally looking forward to more official information on the game. A veteran Battlefield developer like Goldfarb seemingly being impressed is a good sign; he worked on some of the series' best entries, and there's a lot of hope that BF6 can bring recapture some lost magic.
