A new Batman: Arkham game has just been announced, and it could be the series' most immersive title yet. Aside from the divisive Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, the Batman Arkham games have been extremely well received over the years, with many crediting Rocksteady's 2009 title Batman: Arkham Asylum with revitalizing the superhero genre in gaming before its open-world follow-up Arkham City took this even further.

As revealed by incredibly run-down-looking Gotham infested with rats - potentially hinting at an appearance from the villain Ratcatcher, a character who has been teased in Easter eggs but not shown in the series so far - from the perspective of Batman as he glides into an alleyway and becomes overrun by rodents.

Batman: Arkham Shadow Will Tell A New Story In The Arkhamverse

And Will Be The Second VR Title In The Series

Batman's Shadow Falls Over A Rat-Infested Alley.

While very few details were provided, Meta's announcement did confirm Batman: Arkham Shadow will tell a new story set in the Arkhamverse, although it didn't elaborate when in the timeline this will be. The series' previous VR entry, Rocksteady's 2016 title Batman: Arkham VR took place between Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight with a mystery story that showed Batman's descent into madness - something that played a major part in Arkham Knight's story but was told brilliantly through the eyes of the Dark Knight himself.

Whereas Batman: Arkham VR did boast impressive VR visuals for the time, it was limited in the same way many earlier VR titles were, meaning players only carried out detective work and didn't get involved in any real combat, with traversal often involving teleporting with cuts to black screens as a transition. Since then, VR titles have come a long way, and the gliding sequence in the trailer suggests that Batman: Arkham Shadow will have a more fleshed-out and immersive Batman experience with traversal and potential combat that could align more with what players are used to from the rest of the series, especially considering the work that developer Camouflaj did on Iron Man VR where players could soar through the skies as the Marvel superhero and engage in thrilling battles.

Meta did confirm more information about the game would be revealed at Summer Game Fest 2024 on June 7 at 5pm ET. Therefore, players hopefully won't have to wait much longer to see what Batman: Arkham Shadow's gameplay has to offer, and for more information regarding its story and which iconic foes they can expect to face.
