Barbie's Rotten Tomatoes score highlights the critical response to the film. Directed by Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach, Barbie focuses on Margot Robbie's titular doll, who leaves Barbie Land behind to explore the real world. The movie has one of the most star-studded casts in recent memory, with Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, and dozens of others.
Reviews have come pouring in ahead of the Barbie release date on July 21. Now that more than 123 critics' reviews have been tabulated, the movie has been assigned an official Rotten Tomatoes score of 90 percent, though it could still raise or lower slightly as more reviews are added. At the time of writing, this means that the movie is tied with Robbie's best-reviewed titles, 2021's The Suicide Squad and 2017's I, Tonya, both of which also hold 90 percent scores.
Could Barbie Be an Oscars Contender This Year?
Even before its release, Barbie is proving to be a phenomenon. Off the back of many viral moments, including different people being added to Barbie's colorful character posters and a cavalcade of memes delighting in the fact that it's opening on the same weekend as Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, Barbie is shaping up to be one of the buzziest titles of 2023. Due to this, its opening weekend box office projections are stellar, currently shaping up to rake in a domestic total of around $110 million.
This Rotten Tomatoes score is now adding even more hype to the release of Barbie. If this momentum can carry through to awards voting season toward the end of the year, it may even mean that the movie could be in strong contention at the Academy Awards. Robbie has already been nominated for two roles, in I, Tonya and Bombshell, and Barbie has a significantly stronger score than Bombshell's 68 percent.
Barbie is also the third directorial outing for Greta Gerwig, who was Oscar-nominated for her previous movies Lady Bird (Best Original Screenplay & Best Director) and Little Women (Best Adapted Screenplay). With her and Robbie's might combined, they have already given the movie a reputation that exceeds the average IP-based blockbuster. If they continue to play their cards right, at the very least a Best Actress and Best Director or Screenplay nomination could be entirely possible.
