Barbie star Margot Robbie channels her inner news anchor during a recent appearance on a talk show, delivering a story in character about a potential baby name boom for the name Barbara. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film stars Robbie as the titular Mattel doll and follows her as she leaves Barbie Land to embark on a journey to the Real World. In the movie, much like the Mattel toys in real life, there will be multiple different versions of Barbie, each with a different career specialty or function.
Now, ahead of the Barbie release date next month, Robbie and Gerwig stop by for an appearance on Australian talk show The Project, in which Robbie channels her inner news anchor to read a movie-related story. Check out the clip of the interview segment below:
While maintaining her native Australian accent, Robbie, much like Barbie, seems to be able to do it all. Whether the film actually results in an increase to instances of Barbara as a baby name, however, remains to be seen.
What Types Of Barbies Are In The Barbie Movie?
Much like how there are numerous different iterations of the toy in real life, the Barbie movie features multiple versions as well, all played by different actors. While Robbie seems to be playing a base version of the doll, other versions include Issa Rae's President Barbie, Hari Nef's doctor Barbie, Sharon Rooney's lawyer Barbie, Alexandra Shipp's author Barbie, Emma Mackey's Nobel Prize-winning Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne's Supremere Court Justice Barbie, Ritu Arya's Pulitzer Prize-winning Barbie, and Nicola Coughlan's Diplomat Barbie.
There are also several interesting outliers in the movie, with singer Dua Lipa playing a mermaid version of the doll and Kate McKinnon playing an eccentric outcast version. While not actually a Barbie, Emerald Fennell appears in the film as Midge, a doll that was introduced in the 1960s to serve as the main dolls red-headed, more human-looking best friend. In addition to numerous different versions of the titular doll, Ken too will be getting a similar treatment.
Ryan Gosling plays the base Ken doll, but other Kens in the movie include Simu Liu, John Cena, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, and Ncuti Gatwa. Judging from the Barbie trailer, Robbie's doll will be the most unique of both toy lines, with the character shown having something of an existential crisis, which is definitely not normal Barbie behavior. It remains to be seen how the film will fare with audiences, but Robbie's latest press tour stunt is just further proof that she's the perfect actor for the lead role.
