Baldur’s Gate 3 has several romance options for players to explore, ranging from wild one-night stands to longer and sweeter romances. Romance can create tense situations for the party as players make choices to earn a particular companion’s affection, only to find it’s ruined their relationship with others. With so many dialogue options to choose from, it’s important that players know just what to say.
Players can recruit ten companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, and romances are available for all of them, regardless of the player character’s own race and gender. However, romance isn’t easy in Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, players have to gradually win the hearts of their companions and earn their affection. Their feelings towards the player are influenced by the choices the player character makes, and it’s important that players know what each companion ires and hates.
Astarion
Approves of: |
Cruelty to others, malice, deception, taking advantage of others, indifference, siding with monsters, loyalty to him. |
Disapproves of: |
Altruistic conduct, helping others without asking for a reward, betraying him. |
Romancing Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 will prove difficult for players roleplaying as a noble fantasy hero. As a vampire spawn who managed to escape his master, Astarion tends to approve of morally objectionable actions and outright celebrates the misery and suffering of others. Players can earn the Rogue’s approval by making choices that show they’re willing to mock, humiliate and deceive other people. He also appreciates cleverness when it comes to deceit.
A key aspect to winning Astarion’s respect is to express indifference towards the plight of others, including quest givers. Players can still take on the side quests they want, as long as they’ve demanded some kind of personal reward first.
However, Astarion also ires it when the player shows loyalty towards him, such as refusing to betray his location to monster hunters. Players can also win points with Astarion by letting him suck their blood at camp, and telling him he’s free to bleed and drain enemies.
Gale
Approves of: |
Kindness, helping others, non-violence, displays of intelligence, interest in magical lore. |
Disapproves of: |
Resorting to violence, evil acts. |
Romancing Gale in Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t too hard, as the Human Wizard approves of player characters who are kind to others and attempt to resolve situations with as little violence as possible. Players who commit to helping others and doing good deeds should have no trouble winning Gale over. Resolving arguments peacefully, convincing characters that they should help others, and defending the helpless are all things that lead to the player earning Gale’s approval.
Gale is generally very strait-laced and upstanding, but characters on the morally ambiguous side can also win his approval by taking opportunities to demonstrate their intelligence. Asking questions, particularly about magic and poetry, will score points. In a slightly darker twist, players can also help him by giving him magical artifacts once he opens up to them about his magical affliction.
Halsin
Halsin the Druid is one of four companions that players recruit later in the story. As such, there isn’t much information about what he likes and dislikes when it comes to romance. However, in an official developer livestream just before launch, the character was shown taking part in a highly suggestive romance scene while in bear form, confirming he’s a romanceable character.
Jaheira
Jaheira is a returning character from previous games in the Baldur’s Gate series. Unfortunately, much like Halsin, Jaheira isn’t recruited until later in the story. As such, there’s not much information about how players can win her affection. Of all the companions players can recruit in Baldur’s Gate 3, she may be among the toughest to actually recruit to the party.
Karlach
Approves of: |
Comion, displays of heroism and honor, being a free spirit, openness, courage. |
Disapproves of: |
Cowardice, manipulativeness, deceit. |
Karlach is the perfect romance option for players roleplaying as an open-hearted folk hero with a love of life. Karlach approves of textbook heroism and grand displays of honor and courage. Accordingly, she also dislikes indecision and cowardice, so players should endeavor to be as open, honest, and strong as possible. She also responds well to comion, whether it’s expressed towards her, or towards others.
Once players get to know her a bit better, she’ll ask for some help in repairing and maintaining her infernal engine heart. To do this, players need to find Infernal Iron and bring it to the tiefling smith Dammon, so he can assist her. This is a surefire way to win her approval. Karlach’s romance is refreshingly unpretentious; players can win her heart by being open about their thoughts and feelings.
LaeZel
Approves of: |
Displays of strength, willingness to use violence, bluntness, being as direct as possible, confidence in the Githyanki. |
Disapproves of: |
Weakness, avoiding violence and conflict, getting sidetracked from the objective, Shadowheart. |
From a certain perspective, Lae’zel isn’t hard to romance, as she makes her worldview very clear to the player upon first meeting them. Lae’zel favors strength above everything else and will disapprove if players choose to show weakness by resolving situations peacefully. Dominating foes in martial combat is her preferred method for dealing with most matters, and players will earn her approval by following along with her suggestions.
Players can pursue Lae'zel's romance in Baldur's Gate 3 by being blunt and direct with people in conversations. One thing that may rub some players the wrong way is her dislike of getting involved in side quests instead of pursuing main story objectives. Lae’zel will sometimes object if she sees the party getting sidetracked, and advocates for a direct approach to resolving the party’s troubles. She also has an intense hatred of the Cleric Shadowheart, and the two will often be at odds.
Minsc
Minsc’s return in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a big deal, but as he’s only recruited later in the story, it remains to be seen what he likes and dislikes. His return and possible romance is sure to be something to look forward to, especially for players who the character and his giant space hamster Boo from previous Baldur’s Gate games.
Minthara
Approves of: |
Siding with her against the tieflings and druids of Emerald Grove, violence, evil acts. |
Disapproves of: |
Kindness, comion. |
Minthara is a tough companion to recruit, as players will need to take a rather long and blood-soaked journey of betrayal to get her to the party. Romancing Minthara in Baldur’s Gate 3 is only possible if players agree to side with her against the tieflings of Emerald Grove, and participate in the goblin raid against the Druids of the Grove. This morally dubious decision means she’s at odds with Halsin; players can only recruit one or the other. ing her may cause Wyll to leave the party and become hostile.
Like Astarion, Minthara is also ruthless, amoral, and disapproves of displays of kindness and comion, befitting a leader of a gang of goblins. If players are happy to get their hands dirty, then Minthara will be able to the party.
Shadowheart
Approves of: |
Using dialogue and non-violent means to resolve confrontation, respecting her boundaries. |
Disapproves of: |
Violence, Lae’zel. |
Shadowheart’s romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 is particularly fitting for players who enjoy talking their way out of tough situations. Shadowheart will generally approve whenever players resolve a situation without using violence, putting her at odds with Lae’zel, who favors the exact opposite approach. Notably, Shadowheart is more of a neutral character and doesn’t mind if players follow something along the lines of a morally grey, neutral alignment.
As long as players aren’t actively pursuing malicious, evil goals, persuasion and deception are sure to win players some approval points. Shadowheart can be a tough character to get to know personally, unlike other characters such as Karlach who are very open and happy to chat. This is also important, as during Act One, players will get to know a bit more about Shadowheart while traveling. Respecting her boundaries and not pushing her too hard to talk are also ways to win approval.
Wyll
Approves of: |
Heroism, honor, comion. |
Disapproves of: |
Monsters and creatures. |
Players first meet Wyll battling a goblin raid outside Emerald Grove and can chat with him again inside, where he s a young tiefling boy in learning how to use a blade. It’s a nice scene that captures an important part of his character: Wyll loves heroism, honor, and displays of comion. However, unlike Gale, this isn’t absolute, as he also has a hatred of monsters and creatures, particularly goblins and devils.
Nobility only goes so far with Wyll, and players will earn his disapproval by siding with monsters and creatures. In fact, players may have to talk him down if he’s in the party when players first encounter Karlach. He’ll eventually open up to players about his story. To earn his approval, always side against monsters and any strange, untrustworthy creatures such as devils.
Players need to have the companion they’d like to romance in their party, and then make choices in the right way. It’s best to leave any characters morally opposed to the player’s own stance at camp, for the sake of party unity and balance. However, as players progress and their companions start opening up about their own stories, starting a romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 becomes less difficult overall.
