Just like any good Dungeons & Dragons adventure, Baldur’s Gate 3 is packed with items for the party to loot and fill their bags with. While some of it is very plainly useful, such as awesome armor and weapons, others might not have an obvious use leading much of it to be sold to vendors. However, that can mean that some really fun and sometimes much-needed items are lost, and no amount of gold can replace them.
Between potions, spell scrolls, and valuable gems, there are so many items in Baldur's Gate 3 it would be impossible to list them all. However, not everything looted has a clear use and some items require a little out-of-the-box thinking to get the best out of them. Other items might be picked up far in advance of the quest that requires them, meaning that some questlines become stalled if the loot in question has been sold. With that in mind, there are plenty of seemingly innocuous items worth keeping hold of in Baldur's Gate 3.
10 Candles
Candles can be found everywhere in Baldur’s Gate 3 in boxes, bags and chests. While at first glance, they don’t seem to be very useful as they can’t be used as light sources like torches, it’s always worth keeping at least one in each party member’s inventory. Candles are a quick and easy way of adding a little extra fire damage to any melee weapon as they can be dropped on the ground as a free action during combat then the dip bonus action can be used. The fire damage doesn’t last indefinitely, but with the candle, it is easy to repeat the process if needed; just to pick it up after the fight.
9 Shovel
While it might seem obvious to some, there are many adventurers running around Baldur’s Gate 3’s Faerûn with no shovel in their inventory. Just like candles, shovels are easy to find and are necessary to dig up the many buried chests throughout the game. When a mound of earth is discovered, indicating buried treasure, simply clicking on it will let the character begin digging. However, if the perception check is failed, the shovel can still be used to dig in a chosen area to reveal the chest.
8 Githyanki Egg
Part of the quest "Steal a Githyanki Egg," the egg in question can be found in Crèche Yllek. There are a few options in Baldur's Gate 3 for the githyanki egg, but it is possible to ruin the quest entirely by accidentally selling it. While the quest itself has limited good outcomes cutting off any conclusion because of one accidental click is more than frustrating and those wanting to complete the quest should make sure to put the egg in a safe place.
7 Salami
Throughout Baldur’s Gate 3, the party will find food and drink that can be used as camp supplies. These are used on a long rest to fully replenish the character’s abilities and are essential parts of the game. However, there is one piece of food that can also be used as a weapon. Hilariously, salami also acts as a club, dealing 1d4 bludgeoning damage, and can also be dual-wielded. So while the salami can be used as camp supplies and eaten, many have found it much more amusing to defeat their enemies with the giant sausages.
6 Thieves Tools & Trap Disarm Toolkits
It might not seem necessary to carry thieves tools and trap disarm toolkits unless playing as a rogue, but as the party shares an inventory while traveling together, picking them up no matter who is in the group is always a good idea. Thieves tools and the trap toolkits will disappear on failed attempts, so more is always better with these Baldur’s Gate 3 items. While they can be bought from certain vendors, they are found in enough places throughout the world that simply looting every single one found should be enough to ensure the party can pick any lock needed.
5 Wyvern Poison
One of the most powerful poisons in the Baldur’s Gate 3 is simply handed to the party in Act One when they meet Nettie in Druid Grove. The healer gives them some wyvern poison and wants them to use it in case they start to turn into mind flayers, but since that won’t happen, the party is free to keep this awesome poison to use for themselves. The best option with any poison is to give it to Astarion or any rogue, especially if the best rogue subclass of Thief has been chosen, as it gives an extra bonus action. The poison can be used through the drop bonus action to add it to a weapon, or it can be thrown at the enemy to hit multiple targets.
4 Water Bottles & Jugs
Just like camp supplies, jugs and bottles of water are found throughout any Baldur’s Gate 3 adventure. They cannot be added to camp supplies, although they can be drunk; however, the party should keep some in their inventory for other reasons because they can come in handy in other less obvious ways. Water bottles and jugs can be thrown to put out fires, as well as wash away acid or toxic pools that could cause damage. However, one of the most fun uses for them is throwing them at an enemy to give them the wet condition. This enemy is now vulnerable to cold and lightning damage and is a great way of getting around any enemies who might have resistance to those damage types.
3 Dark Amethyst
The dark amethyst might be found by accident or as part of the quest linked with the strange Baldur’s Gate 3 book, The Necromancy of Thay. Found down the well in the Blighted Village guarded by phase spiders and their matriarch is the dark amethyst, which is needed to open the dark tome and reveal its secrets. However, there have been instances reported of those not paying attention to the details of the quest or misclicking when at a vendor, which has resulted in the amethyst being sold. As the amethyst is vital to completing the quest, it’s best to tuck it away somewhere safe until reuniting it with the book.
2 Infernal Iron
From the moment Karlach is first met, she tells the party her infernal engine is acting up and she needs a mechanic. The mechanic in question is Dammon, who can be found in Druid Grove and later in the Last Light Inn. He will need infernal iron to help her, and there are five pieces of infernal iron to be found throughout Acts One and Two in Baldur's Gate 3. Dammon can perform two repairs for Karlach and then use the rest to make the awesome Flawed Helldusk Armour set, so it's a good idea to hunt down all five pieces.
1 Soul Coins
Finally, strange coins can be found all over Faerûn and, at first, seem to have no use beyond fetching a pretty penny with vendors. Soul coins are dark, heavy coins created in the Nine Hells as currency using people's souls. While that might sound quite gruesome, the soul coins in Baldur's Gate 3 serve a unique purpose that doesn't become apparent unless one is looted while Karlach is in the party. She can use the coins to provide her with a little extra boost in combat while she is raging, making them well worth collecting.
