There are many cool spells in Avowed, and Wizards of all kinds can take the ones they want as they progress through the game. Some of them may look better than others, while some will be a little more practical. There are those spells that fall somewhere in between, which makes them all the more valuable and fun to use. However, sometimes it’s fun just to look cool, and these are the spells that will help players do so most.

A Ranger/Wizard build in Avowed may make a lot of use out of some of these spells, but the class system in the game is fluid enough that anyone can take whatever they want in whatever tree they want to. This means that even the most dedicated Fighter can take one cool spell to have in their arsenal - and they absolutely should. There are plenty of spells that can help the Godlike achieve great effects while looking awesome.

10 Crackling Bolt

Level 5 Lightning Spell

This one is a great start to a pool of cool spells. It’s available fairly early on in the game, and it will allow players to take down a few enemies.

Cost

50 Essence

Cooldown

15 Secs

However, it’s not quite as flashy as some of the other spells on this list. There are a lot of good lightning spells, and this one is good for dealing with a larger amount of enemies.

Days before its release, Avowed has already hit a major milestone on Steam’s Top Sellers Chart, proving that the RPG already has a lot of fans.

Crackling Bolt will flash lightning at an opponent and then bounce between two more enemies. If the player only has one opponent, it will still bounce away from them and then come back, only hitting twice. This can make it feel a little more underwhelming at times, but it is a useful and neat-looking trick to have when possible.

9 Ring of Fire

Level 10 Fire Spell

This spell looks awesome, but not as cool as some of the other Fire spells. What makes it a little less cool is mainly that both this spell and the Bristling Frost aren’t super visible to the player, at least in the first-person perspective. However, it is hard to deny that watching all of the enemies that enter the Godlike's personal space catch on fire is fun.

The downside of this spell and the Freezing spell like it is that enemies do have to be within melee range of the Godlike for it to work. If someone is focused heavily on ranged combat, it might be counterproductive for those people to actively want enemies to get close to them. However, it is useful if the player is getting overwhelmed, as it would reduce the health of the enemies around them and aid them in not dying.

8 Blizzard

Level 5 Freezing Spell

This one is pretty cool in multiple senses of the word. This can be a great option for a Fighter in Avowed to take, as it will stop a lot of enemies in their tracks, allowing players to dash in and attack while they are vulnerable.

It can also help players with some enemy management. The Godlike can use this to give players enough time to revive their allies without getting attacked.

It takes a few seconds to revive allies, during which enemies will be focused solely on the Godlike. That’s why a freezing spell is so useful to give the player time to get to both companions if necessary.

It may not be the most exciting spell, but it is great to watch every enemy freeze in place. It also allows the Godlike to follow up with other exciting moves and, if players get the right combo, they can hit enemies for even more. It’s a great spell and one that is both very useful and very powerful in the right moments. It won’t be as effective against a single enemy, but it will still hit and potentially freeze them.

7 Jolting Touch

Level 1 Lightning Spell

It may just be a level 1 spell, but despite that, it remains one of the coolest and most useful spells. It is a great option for enemy management, especially if there is water around. It gets better as it ranks up, as there are a lot of upgrades that it can get as the Godlike reaches higher levels and as they unlock more magical abilities.

The Grimoire of Sparks is an extremely useful tool and can be quite effective at managing enemies. It has four different spells that can all push enemies away from the player or do a large amount of explosive damage. Take the Wizard ability that makes lightning spells even stronger if it seems like this is the Grimoire that works the best.

6 Freezing Pillar

Level 15 Freezing Spell

This one is fun to use as well. It works a lot like Blizzard, but instead of a small ice shower, it is a blast of freezing energy. Summoning a beam of ice from the heavens is cool on the worst of days, on the best, it can help the Godlike deal a large amount of damage and keep their enemies frozen and unable to fight. As it ranks up, the effects begin to last longer, dealing even more damage.

Sometimes higher-level spells do not feel as effective or do not feel quite as exciting as it seemed like the previous versions did. This was the case with Jolting Touch, and it was unclear if the same would happen with Freezing Pillar.

Luckily it did not, and this spell proved to be useful and just as effective over time. Some of this is a matter of preference, but a Grimoire of the Rime will allow the Godlike to freeze their enemies ad nauseam with every freezing spell in the book.

5 Spirit Lance

Level 15 Spell

There are several spells for wizards in Avowed that can create weapons, and this is one of them. The first version, Parasitic Staff, feels like it should work very well, but the ability didn’t matter as much and the staff felt slow compared to the one-handed sword.

Those who are multi-classing will likely want to have at least one non-magical one-handed weapon on them for close encounters that aren't easy to escape. However, the Spirit Lance negated some of the issues with the Parasitic Staff and looked like a lot of fun when it was brought out.

The Spirit Lance is available in something as low rarity as the Common Grimoire of Sparks. Players may not be able to use that spell right away, as it is Level 15, but once a player reaches that level, they don’t need a unique Grimoire to use it.

It conjured a spear with explosive damage, giving the Godlike a weapon that can throw enemies across the area, and both prevent them from getting overwhelmed and kill some of those enemies along the way.

4 Meteor Shower

Level 20 Fire Spell

It may seem odd that the only Level 20 spell included here is not the highest-ranking spell on this list. However, the remaining spells have something unique about them that makes them just a little cooler than the Meteor Shower. Additionally, the only other Level 20 spell, Arcane Seal, is very useful but not very cool. The Meteor Shower, on the other hand, looks awesome when the Godlike is able to conjure it.

That being said, it is a fire version of the Blizzard spell, which the Godlike can get much earlier. It also is a fairly standard spell, which is not as unique and can be seen in a lot of different video games. That’s not this spell’s fault, but it means that the other spells rank just a little higher on the list of how cool they are.

3 Blackbow

Level 15 Spell

Summoning a weapon might not necessarily feel that unique, but having an extra two-handed ranged weapon in this game is a pretty big deal. The two-handed ranged weapons are both quite fun, and having to pick between a cool bow and an arquebus was not very fun.

Blackbow

Cost

80 Essence

Cooldown

20 Secs

Duration

30 Secs

However, having a separate bow that shot poison arrows was very cool, particularly when the Godlike could wield it in addition to a great arquebus.

Use something like the Vindictive Band ring to add on even more Poison damage, increasing the effectiveness. If so, consider taking the Spirit of Decay ability to make it particularly devastating for your foes.

Having the Poison damage is just a plus, and at higher ranks the arrows fly right through enemies and continue on, hitting everyone else along the way. It’s a great additional weapon, and even though the duration ends, the player will still be able to resummon it fairly quickly if they have any perks that up their Essence.

2 Returning Storm

Level 15 Lightning Spell

Summoning an entire thunderstorm feels like the Godlike has become the God of Thunder. While that in itself is not as unique, it does make them feel awesome.

Avowed is Obsidian Entertainment’s latest offering, but takes a lot of welcome inspiration from what is often overlooked in the studio’s catalog.

Changing the weather is quite cool, no matter how the dice fall. However, it beats out Meteor Shower because of what it can do at the higher ranks.

Returning Storm

At higher ranks, the Returning Storm can actually root enemies in place. This means the Godlike no longer needs something like Tanglefoot, and they can focus more heavily on abilities that help them deal higher damage. It doesn’t seem like lightning should be rooting any enemies in place, but this time it does. From there, watch the chaos as lightning rains down on enemies who can’t escape it.

1 Pull of Eora

Level 15 Spell

This one is just fun, and a great tool to use against the Godlike's enemies. The Godlike can use this spell to draw enemies away from them and into a vortex to “The Beyond.” It will affect at least 2 enemies, with more being affected the higher their level. It may not be quite as devastating as some of the other spells, but it is an effective tool and one that is unique and looks very cool.

Pull of Eora

Cost

70 Essence

Cooldown

20 Secs

Duration

12 Secs

Any player will have fun using this spell, regardless of class. This may not be every player's pick for the best spell or the coolest, as it is a preference at the end of the day. The disadvantage is that none of the elemental boosts will affect this spell, but it's worth it to see even massive enemies get drawn away. Every player should be experimenting with spells in Avowed to see which one works best for them.
