The Avengers are the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet the MCU’s original Avengers did not remain together for long. From The Avengers (2012), the MCU created a level of excitement regarding the formation of the Avengers on the big screen that worked not only for long-time comic book readers but also for those who were not familiar with the Marvel universe. The MCU’s unique approach to superhero films lead to The Avengers being a pop culture phenomenon, but it did not take long before the Avengers team featured in the 2012 movie was disassembled.

The MCU’s Original Avengers Team Only Existed For Three Years
Considering that The Avengers takes place in 2012 and Age of Ultron is set in 2015, the MCU’s original Avengers team only existed for three years. After the Battle of New York, not much was shown of the Avengers as a group before the events of Age of Ultron. The only hint that the Avengers continued to work as a team in those three years is that Age of Ultron opens with the heroes storming “another" HYDRA base. Still, even if in the MCU the Avengers were more of a sporadic team saved for big missions like fighting Ultron, Phase 2 was too soon to disband the original Avengers and introduce an almost all-new lineup.

By the time Wanda and Vision had just been introduced, meaning that their allegiances and relationships with the other Avengers were still being developed. Granted, most of the original Avengers were in Civil War, but only Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff were still active of the team. A solution for that would have been to form the new Avengers after Civil War, though that would have changed Marvel’s Phase 3 plans entirely.
