Netflix's hotly anticipated live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender finally arrived in February 2024, and now it has been renewed for a second season. Based on the cartoon series of the same name, Avatar: The Last Airbender follows a boy named Aang who is the Avatar, the prophesized one who must master the four elements to defeat the Fire Nation and save the world. The original animated series from 2005 is one of the most beloved shows of the aughts, and Netflix's adaptation had tremendous shoes to fill, especially in the wake of the failed 2010 movie.

Perhaps one of the most hyped Netflix original series of all time, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted to middling reviews. Though the visuals of the series have been praised by nearly every major critic, outlets like Variety called it "a beautifully crafted disappointment". While the initial reaction has been somewhat harsh and polarized, the audience reception will ultimately decide the fate of Avatar. Many streaming-exclusive shows fare poorly with critics but end up surviving because they build a large fanbase. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 is just the beginning of Aang's epic journey.

Though the wait is still ongoing for the sophomore outing, the latest news comes in the form of a release date tease for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2. Newcomer Miya Cech is set to play Toph in the second season, and she offered a somewhat uncertain update about when viewers should expect the new episodes. "I think that we were looking at early 2026," said Cech, but she was quick to say she isn't exactly sure. This announcement isn't surprising, and there's little chance that Avatar will arrive before the end of 2025.

Read Cech's full comments here:

Yeah, I mean, personally, I’m not exactly sure. I feel like they’re trying to keep our expectations realistic, so I think that we were looking at early 2026 for Season 2, but let’s just hope it gets done a little quicker than that.

It took little time after the series premiere for Netflix to renew Avatar: The Last Airbender for a second season, but the streamer went beyond a simple renewal. Netflix has opted to pick up the live-action cartoon adaptation for not one but two additional seasons, which promises to carry the Last Airbender story all the way to its natural conclusion. Netflix has also rushed the show into production, and it was announced in October 2024 that filming was underway on the sophomore outing via an exciting teaser video.

All 8 episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 premiered on Netflix on February 22nd, 2024.

Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Cast

Aang, Sokka, and Katara Will Return

Since the debut season only covered roughly the first season of the animated series, the bulk of the cast of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender will be back in season 2. Most importantly, Gordon Cormier will reprise his role as Avatar Aang alongside Kiawentiio as Katara and Ian Ousley as Sokka. The only character who is definitely not coming back for season 2 is Ken Leung's Commander Zhao, who met his fiery demise at the hands of Uncle Iroh.

Amber Midthunder's Princess Yue also might not return, though her selfless sacrifice could see her reprise her role in the future. The beloved Earthbender Toph is set to the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, with newcomer Miya Cech tapped to play the wisecracking "Blind Bandit". Several other key characters from the book 2 arc have also been cast, including Lady Beifong (played by Crystal Yu), Toph's mom. Meanwhile, Kelemete Misipeka will play The Boulder, Toph's primary rival in the fighting arena.
