Fans of the Avatar franchise have new content to look forward to, with the Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as three animated feature films announced in development, one of which will star Avatar Korra of the Southern Water Tribe.

As one of the four Nations in the Avatar franchise, The Southern and Northern Water Tribes are home to some of the most beloved and well-written characters throughout many mainline and spinoff stories. Known for being the home of waterbending, many characters from the Water Tribes are powerfully skilled in this bending style and known for their harmony and intelligence.

Kuruk

Avatar Kuruk was the successor of Avatar Yangchen, and preceded the cycle of Avatar Kyoshi. Kuruk was a powerful waterbender born into the Northern Water Tribe, who held strong dreams and ideals of uniting people and following in the footsteps of Avatar Yangchen.

Kuruk was an exceptionally brave Avatar who unfortunately ed at the young age of 33, after years of numerous battles against dark spirits to protect others from the festering of the same deep spiritual corruptions he endured. In addition to suffering with these burdens, Kuruk had to endure the tragedy of losing his fiancee to Koh the Face Stealer. Kuruk was an Avatar that faced many struggles, and fans often sympathize with him for all the pain he endured on top of his Avatar duties.

Kya

Kya is introduced throughout The Legend of Korra as the only daughter of Aang and Katara, and sister of Tenzin and Bumi, as well as the only waterbender of the three siblings. Kya spent her life traveling th world to become a highly skilled healer, before settling in the Southern Water Tribe alongside her mother, following the death of Aang.

Kya proved herself to be an extremely capable individual throughout the story of The Legend of Korra, both with her talents in healing and her skills in combat as a waterbender. Kaya was an exceptionally evasive and resilient fighter, and as the daughter of Katara, it was no surprise to see her hold the skills of a waterbending master. Kya was shown to be a strong, but free-spirited and loving character, making her one of the fan-favorite side characters in The Legend of Korra.

Yue

Yue was a side character who made a brief but significant appearance in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Yue was introduced to viewers as Princess of the Northern Water Tribe, and was known as a kind-hearted, gentle character who always offered optimism and hope to those around her.

Knowing that the perished moon spirit, Tui had once ed on some of its own life force to save her life as a newborn, Yue chose to sacrifice herself and become the new moon spirit during the Siege of the North. In doing so, Yue restored the ability of waterbending to the world, and she was later seen on more than one occasion through motifs and imagery of the moon, implying that she continued to watch over her friends in the future. Her sacrifice had many viewers falling in love with her character, and because of this, she is considered one of the best side characters in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise.

Ming-Hua

Ming-Hua was a fugitive known as the waterbending master member of the Red Lotus. Ming-Hua was an extremely powerful fighter, using her talents of waterbending to create water tendrils to replace her missing arms.

Ming-Hua was an extremely aggressive waterbender and highly capable in combat, well-known to fans as one of the strongest female characters within The Legend of Korra. Ming-Hua used forceful, brutal attacks to severely injure her opponents in battle, and was not bothered by killing innocent people to complete an objective. Ming-Hua was a terrifyingly powerful villain of the Red Lotus, who was fascinating to watch, and well-ed by fans.

Desna And Eska

Introduced throughout The Legend of Korra, Desna and Eska are the twin brother and sister children to Unalaq, and cousins to Avatar Korra. Desna and Eska were shown to be problematic and loyal to their father's antagonistic views, but later turned against him and ed Korra's side to save the world from darkness.

Desna and Eska are exceptionally powerful waterbenders who possess an unusually aggressive combat style. Desna and Eska were shown to be acrobatic, precise and co-operative fighters, often attacking in unison and moving in synergy with their bending. Desna and Eska were well-ed for their dry sense of humor and close relationship, and many fans were delighted to see them later become the succeeding leaders of the Northen Water Tribe.

Noatak "Amon"

Amon is revealed to be Noatak in ATLA.

Noatak, known under the alias "Amon" is a character who made a significant impact throughout the storyline as one of the best villains within The Legend of Korra. Amon was the leader of a group known as the Equalists, who favored ideals of an anti-bender world.

Amon posed many threats to Korra and Republic City, and was responsible for taking away the bending of many individuals. He was charismatic and strategically calculated in his actions, making him one of the most intellectual villains of the franchise, often one step ahead of his opponents. With the secret identity of a bloodbending waterbender, Amon was a terribly frightening villain who was fearless in facing his enemies, and is considered one of the most complex and interesting villains of the franchise.

Katara

As the one to discover Avatar Aang, Katara is a hugely important character to Avatar: The Last Airbender's story. Katara is the daughter of Hakoda and sister of Sokka, and a talented waterbender who develops her skills throughout the Gaang's travels.

Katara took on a caring and kind, somewhat motherly nature with her friends, and was brave and willing to sand up and fight for what she believed in. Katara continued to grow from strength to strength with her waterbending talents, soon becoming a waterbending master. Fans were delighted to see her progress and make her way as a powerful female waterbender, making a stand as one of the most powerful female characters in the story.

Korra

Avatar Korra is the main protagonist and center character of The Legend of Korra, as the Water Avatar that follows Avatar Aang. Korra is a determined, stubborn and loyal friend fiercely protective of those around her. As the Avatar, she can bend all four elements, and has a raw strength in combat that allowed her to gain the upper hand in many fights.

Korra was a core character from the Water Tribes, and has been a participant in many of the well-known best waterbending fight scenes throughout the franchise. Korra is a character that goes through a journey of much personal growth, as well as developing her skills as the Avatar. Korra ended up capable of both spiritbending and energybending as well as the four elements, and used these skills to unite the living world and the spirit world in peace, making an impact as the first Avatar of the new cycle.

Sokka

Sokka is a fan-favored, well-adored character known to viewers as the son of Hakoda and brother of Katara. Sokka was the strategist of the Gaang, and known for his excessively goofy humor and light-hearted sarcasm, which made fans fall in love with his character.

Sokka, though he possessed no bending capabilities, never let this hinder the impact he had on helping the Gaang in their victory in ending the Hundred Year War. Sokka was a brilliant strategist, and worked tirelessly to improve his combat skills and proficiencies in weapon use, training with both his trusty boomerang, and in the art of swordsmanship under Master Piandao. Ultimately, Sokka was an incredibly loyal and dedicated warrior, a caring friend with infectious humor, and a brilliant character from the Southern Water Tribe.
