Arnold's best movies have allowed him to spew forth some incredibly memorable dialogue, with a few quotes in particular standing out as especially amazing.
Over the course of his action blockbuster career, Arnold would essentially go on to play the same character in different situations many times. One thing each iteration of Arnold's harnessed and familiar personality has in common is a love for audacious puns, sometimes worked into his one-liners to hilarious effect. From the various models of Terminator to stoic soldiers like Dutch of Predator fame, Arnold's characters boast some amazing line-reads that no other actor could have pulled off with as much vigor and enthusiasm.
10 "It's Not A Tumor!"
Kindergarten Cop
To this day, Arnold is best known for his role as an overwhelming action hero bursting with masculinity, unflappable even in the face of impossible odds or vicious bad guys. What's more underrated, however, is his talent for comedic timing, even when he's at the butt of the joke. As Arnold's characters transitioned in the late '80s and early '90s from grizzled super soldiers to endearing straight men in comedic scenarios, he would get more opportunities to flex his punchline deliveries thanks to films like KIndergarten Cop.
Here, Arnold plays a veteran cop working undercover as a kindergarten classroom teacher in order to find the wife and child of a drug kingpin living under assumed identities. At one point, one of the unruly kids suggests his headache might be a tumor, something Arnold's character suddenly and violently reacts against. Something about the way Arnold exasperatedly insists "It's not a tumor!" while clearly out of his element, surrounded by 5-year-olds, is exceptionally endearing and utterly hilarious.
9 "What Killed The Dinosaurs? The Ice Age!"
Batman & Robin
Another of Arnold's most infamous roles is his participation in what is often considered to be the worst Batman movie of all time, Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. Schwarzenegger stars as Dr. Victor Fries, a.k.a. Mr. Freeze, an ice-themed supervillain who uses weaponized cryogenic technology to hold Gotham City for ransom until a cure can be found for the terminal disease of his beloved wife, Nora, who is kept in a state of cold suspended animation. Arnold's Mr. Freeze is a delightfully dumb take on the character who indulges in a wide variety of ice-based puns.
The best of them is easily during the Gotham Natural History Museum fight, in which Freeze ends up coating an entire display of dinosaur skeletons in frost. Clearly having a grand old time during the fight, Freeze remarks "What killed the dinosaurs? The ice age!". This line is the perfect distillation of the amazingly stupid ironic enjoyment to be wrought out of Batman & Robin, from the fact that the statement isn't scientifically true to the idea that the film only had a fight taking place in a history museum so Arnold could belch this line.
8 "Let Off Some Steam, Bennett"
Commando
Arnold Schwarzenegger's legacy of puns was established well-before he appeared as a villain in Batman & Robin. Enter Commando, one of Arnold's most archetypal and beloved action movie roles in which he plays a straightforward elite soldier whose daughter is kidnapped by one of his old enemies. Of course, this prompts Arnold's John Matrix to go on a rampage targeting his daughter's abductors, including his former comrade-in-arms Captain Simon Bennett.
After a lengthy drag-down brawl, Matrix finally lands a killing blow on Bennett by using his Herculean strength to straight-up rip a pipe out of a nearby wall and hurl it like a javelin into his opponent's stomach, impaling him into another pipe. This agonizing death causes hot steam to billow from the pipe lodged in Bennett's abdomen as he dies. Arnold's response to the horrific sight is to cooly quip "Let off some steam, Bennett", proving that even in the most grimly of circumstances, puns are always priority number one for Arnold's characters.
7 "Benny! Screw You!"
Total Recall
Leave it to a Paul Verhoeven movie to take a striking science fiction concept and turn it into a jaw-dropping cavalcade of crass humor and graphic violence. Total Recall stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Douglas Quaid, a construction worker living in a dystopian future where memories of exciting vacations can be implanted as a service. After receiving an implant memory of a dangerous adventure through Mars, Quaid finds reality beginning to match his supposedly fake memories.
At one point, Quaid finds an ally in the Martian taxi driver Benny, only for him to later reveal himself as a traitor working for the film's ultimate villain, Richter. When Benny attacks Quaid and his new Martian rebel ally with a massive drill tank, Quaid responds by charging him with a handheld jackhammer, piercing the hull of the hulking machine and impaling yet another Arnold antagonist. It's only fitting that Arnold yells "Screw you!" as he uses the unique improvised weapon, making for yet another amazingly memorable one-liner upon killing someone.
6 "See You At The Party, Richter!"
Total Recall
Douglas Quaid in Total Recall doesn't have just one amazing pun that he makes upon slaying one of the film's antagonists. The overarching villain is arguably Richter, the right-hand-man of Martian tyrant Vilos Cohaagen. Richter has a particular grudge against Quaid for sleeping with his wife, who was posing as Quaid's wife thanks to implanted memories as part of a cover-up. Earlier, when Quaid is incapacitated by the memory-altering machine, he punches him in the face and tells him he'll see him at the party, referring to the fact that Quaid's new memories will turn him into a bad guy.
Quaid proves he does this after all (Even if subconsciously) by repeating the same words to Richter after ripping off his arms on a massive rising platform, allowing him to fall to his death. Not only is the line a great callback to the earlier beat, but the way Quaid calls down to the falling body of his foe makes it all the more memorable. Disrespectfully tossing Richter's severed arms down after him is merely icing on the cake.
5 "Don't Disturb My Friend, He's Dead Tired"
Commando
It's great enough that Commando gives Arnold the chance to make plenty of on-kill puns, but he even gets to do so ironically in a way that only the audience can fully grasp. After his daughter is kidnapped, John Matrix is blackmailed by the film's villain to help him assassinate a political rival in the fictional movie country of Val Verde, being escorted there by plane. It's not long before Matrix surreptitiously snaps the neck of his captor, propping him up against a pillow to appear to be sleeping.
Flagging down a flight attendant, Arnold asks her not to disturb his friend, saying that he's "Dead tired". What's especially great about this pun is the fact that Matrix is only making it for himself -- The stewardess doesn't know that the "sleeping" man is actually a corpse, so the comedy of the exact phrasing is lost to everyone but the audience and Matrix himself. Funny and stupid though the line may be, it adds a lot of personality to what might otherwise be a boring, generic action hero.
4 "Your Foster Parents Are Dead"
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Not only is Terminator 2: Judgment Day perhaps the single best film of Arnold Schwarzenegger's career, but it's also one of the greatest action movies of all time. Here, Arnold gets his first chance to play a heroic Terminator unit as the friendly T-800 that goes back in time to prevent the young John Connor from being killed by the deadly T-1000. The two robots speak to one another on the phone at one point, each using their advanced software to disguise their voice.
After confirming his suspicions that the T-1000 had already terminated John's foster parents by catching it slip up on the name of John's dog, the T-800 abruptly hangs up the phone, telling John "Your foster parents are dead". The cold monotone in which Arnold delivers the alarming news is perfect for the robotic hero, who is under no obligation to make life comfortable for John as he focuses on saving his life. It's only one of the many lines proving that the T-800 is the role Arnold was born to play.
3 "Stick Around!"
Predator
Arnold Schwarzenegger also deserves a lot of credit for his role in kickstarting the Predator movie series as Dutch, the special ops commando who is the first one to encounter the horrific alien hunter in a film. What makes Predator so interesting is the fact that before the titular extraterrestrial menace shows up, Dutch and his elite squadron are essentially already in the middle of a completely different movie. The standard Schwarzenegger action flick Predator is before the Predator himself arrives comes complete with some classic Arnold puns.
During an assault on an enemy base, Dutch kills one opposing soldier by flinging a massive throwing knife into his torso, pinning him to a wall as a satisfying springing sound. Of course, Dutch has to take the time to smirk into the barrel of the camera and say "Stick around", playing on the fact that he just stuck a hapless victim to a wall with a massive blade. It's beats like this that make Dutch such an easy hero to root for.
2 "To Crush Your Enemies, See Them Driven Before You, And To Hear The Lamentations Of Their Women."
Conan The Barbarian
As fun as his goofy side is, it can't be denied that Arnold Schwarzenegger is also commonly paraded as the pinnacle of Hollywood masculinity, for better or worse. No character better emphasizes this than Conan the Barbarian, appearing in the film adapting the famous fantasy works of Robert E. Howard. He proves it at one point in the film when asked a simple question, "What is best in life?".
Conan's iconic response is the soliloquy "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women." Arnold's read here is still a tad rough so early in his acting career, but his harsh accent and stoic voice make for an unforgettable sound when combined with the brutality of the words. This line emphasizes Conan's bleak worldview tempered by the cruelty he himself has had to endure.
1 "I'll Be Back"
The Terminator
Of course, no Arnold Schwarzenegger one-line can outdo the simple efficacy of "I'll be back". In the first Terminator, the T-800 is still a villain, hunting Sarah Connor before she can give birth to the future leader of the human rebellion against the murderous machine army of Skynet. Attempting to find Sarah Connor at a police station, the T-800 is rebuffed by a police officer at the front desk, ominously ensuring him he'll be back soon.
The T-800 then comes crashing through the entire lobby with his beautiful all-black 1976 Chevy Nova, making good on his promise. The line isn't only easily Arnold's best, but one of the most iconic movie lines in history, long parodied and repeated to the point of ubiquity. In just three simple words, Arnold Schwarzenegger instantly established himself as a cinematic legend.
